We host retreats for creative people and put on an annual Chautauqua for neighbors and friends.

I just want y'all to know that I'm going to retire on December 31, 2025 -- 15 months to go! I'll be spending a lot more time with these guys, but still trying to make the world safe for creative people and creative communities.

I'm going to my 55th high school reunion this weekend, meeting with survivors of Post Sputnik Gifted school, 1960's Viet Name war and war against the war, 1970's mass apathy, 1980's try-to-have-it-all exhaustion, 1990's Tech revolution, 2000's post 9/11 insanity, and today's culture wars. It's been a long ride, but I'm still the one trying to get people to build a pyramid at my sleepovers, making bonfires in the yard, and keeping people up late with stories.

I hate re-stacking hay bales to make room for more hay bales. That is all.

I've signed the contract with Palgrave-Macmillan to publish a cross-over scholarly and trade book for the general public. We need to talk about freedom, because while we actually know exactly what it means on a daily basis, we’re told by our leaders that it’s something else. We know that we like to have a stretch of time ahead of us with no obligations and the opportunity to do the things we like to do the most. Most Americans have little personal freedom of this kind, and long for it. We’re told however, that we are the Land of the Free. Some politicians tell us that liberty is a strong national defense, a strong economy, or the opportunity to become an entrepreneur. Others believe their liberty depends on being free to discriminate against people based on race, gender, or religion. Too often, the conversation about liberty is about trivial demands like not having to wear a mask to prevent spread of infection. We need to change the conversation about liberty so that we can talk about our everyday psychological needs and the ordinary desires of people to live in families and communities where they don’t feel held down and held back all the time. The title is The Psychology of Liberty: Reclaiming Our Everyday Freedom.

Gracie, Jómbi, Baldur, and Kári leave for Iceland tomorrow after more than a month of fun on the farm. As Baldur says, I'm "sappy" -- sad that they are leaving and happy to have had so many days of heaven.

The Icelanders are getting a real taste of farm life. The dog got skunked and ran madly through the house, requiring the whole place to be de-odorized. Dusty the horse somehow acquired a deep wound that Doc Jones sutured on his day off, and now is confined to the front lawn to keep her away from infection, and is merrily eating her way through the garden. Coyotes, owls, horses stampeding, cicadas, frogs and lots of new night noises for the kids to learn to sleep through...

Guess who's coming tomorrow afternoon? The Icelanders! The whole family -- Gracie, Jómbi, Baldur, and Kári will be here over a month. And then--arriving after midnight--Sam and Helene! I'm pretty excited, delighted, and ready!

We rescued this big gray turkey from death by coyote, car, or angry wild tom from the crossroads and now we are stuck with a grim, posturing guy in the pen besieged by our dogs frantically barking on the outside. I hope the owner steps forward and reclaims him before we all calm down and admit him to the family. This is me hiking up the long hill, after a long chase, carrying my feathers-ruffled burden.
