Never a dull moment. We now have a saying for things that suck to do but we still gotta do em. Like when our water pipe burst during the ice storm, or our dryer needed to be fully disassembled to fix a part or in this case digging a 500 trench in a small window between rain storms….we say it’s just “somethin to do?!” I recommend it! Try to incorporate this into your everyday. It actually works at making the whole thing a little less sucky.
Finally made one of my dreams come true this winter! A physical farm map!! We have lots of names and places so it’s been a long time coming to have a reference for it all. Better late than never!
It’s gonna live in our packout where we have our crew meetings.
Arrrgh! We set sail on those mighty green seas this week and staved off getting scurvy. We pillaged the field for treasure and narrowly avoided falling overboard from drinking too much rum. Sea shanties we sung and pieces of eight filled the hull of our vessel. Was a fine day indeed! 🏴☠️⚓️💰💎
My dad makes things beautiful! He loves a beveled edge, smoothly sanded corners and surface.
He built us our second root washer and it is amazing! Our first rendition has hardware cloth as the surface which can scratch new potato skins but this one is smooth as a baby’s bottom …..and yes we are still washing our roots like this :) call us cave dwellers and I won’t argue with you.
Just dropped off 640 lbs of sweet bell peppers to the for lunches tomorrow! This is part of the program and it has been awesome to work with them this year and to know our peppers are getting out to the people! Peppers are bonkers right now so I’m thinking of a new name for the month: pepptember?

Annnnnd our curing shallots and onions which are always so picturesque and require multiple glamour shots being taken of them. They are curing in our “future propagation house” that has turned into a two year project to build. We are feeling pretty glutinous having an empty prop house just for curing our crops in this year!
For anyone out there wondering if we celebrated Kris Kringle’s half birthday…we wouldn’t miss it! 🎄🎅

Who is who here? Well we did it again…accidentally wore the same thing to work but then took it a step further and intentionally adorned it with these sweet bandanas from .
We dressed up again….hard to totally tell here because it’s the end of the day and layers of clothing have been peeled away. It was Pride themed and thanks to Becca (aka Scuba Steve) we had homemade rainbow popsicles to boot!

Gotta let the wild be wild sometimes. We built this greenhouse in the winter and then planted these beds in the spring, all the while milkweed was deep underground making its way to the surface. When we saw it emerging we decided to let it co-exist with our farm crops because it was their first :)
Yes we have to work around it and it’s not the most “efficient” use of space if all we care about is our farm crops. But there are never enough habitat plants and wild places on any production scale farm. So every little bit counts.

Alter Ego dress up theme this past week for Laurie’s birthday! From left to right: fisherman, detective, baker, Wild West cowgirl, cowgirl, pro dancer, and dog tamer. This was a first for this theme and it’s a keeper!
Deep in the trenches! Trenched about 1500 ft last week and about 600 ft of that was cobble and sand, so we have been working overtime. It ain’t easy trying to make life easy. But once the irrigation system is installed, it should practically run it self:)

Knocking out one project at a time this winter. Here we re-purposed an old aluminum greenhouse that we took down from another property. It will be our future propagation house. Still a few more steps before we can sow seeds in there.

Big celebrations here today (off the farm). We made it out of the cold thick fog soup of the valley and found the sun up on top of Spencer’s butte!
Here’s to Circling round the sun now 10 times with each other and feeling stoked for more :)

No better time than peak harvest to be working on infrastructure that was needed last week… we keep moving around our macrobins to be able to work in there. we have been spending the last couple of weekends working on insulating our third cooler (this one for winter squash, and things) and thus September has turned out to be a real beast.
I keep thinking that one sweet day in the future we won’t be building anything on the side and we will just be simply farming.
How easy that will be :) 😉

We will be slinging produce at the Thursday Market tomorrow, in front of Tacovore. The hours have changed from last week. We will now be there between 12-4. There is only three more weeks left so come on down and get some good grub. This includes of course the now famous raddichio! Comes with recipes!
