Poppy had an amazing time splashing in the water with 6 other dogs at our small group session last weekend! 🌊

It's so nice to have a community of clients who know how to support their dogs in public so that everything goes smoothly. 🫢

I just sit back and enjoy the show! 😎

HBD to my esteemed Collie-ge (get it? Collie? Colleague?).

When I was looking for a puppy 8 years ago, my priorities were:
πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ίgood with other dogs
πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ίall terrain vehicle

I got that and more with this guy. He's just fine in rain, snow, and mud. Most of all though, he's better with dogs than I ever dreamed and he has worked with the majority of my clients' dogs. He loves helping and I am so lucky to have him as my one and only coworker.

What are you looking for in your next dog? Emery and I hope you find it. πŸ’ž

Aw, look at sweet Poppy being so confident in Emery's presence. πŸ₯Ή

Poppy can be nervous around dogs who don't respect her space. She kept herself very distanced from Emery at first, then decided when she was ready to get closer. Even when she came within 2 feet of Emery, she didn't go up to his face, and he didn't go up to hers.

Does Poppy need to change? No! She acts like a very polite, mature dog. We just have to help her have good experiences where she doesn't get rushed by rude, boisterous "but my dog is friendly!" dogs. 🚫

Meet Max! 😍

Max is a sensitive dude who really doesn't appreciate handling by humans - like, at all. He's had some bad experiences in the past and people have pushed him too far. But his current home is giving him lots of space to be himself and though he's very slow to warm up, he is very quick to learn.

What do we do for dogs like Max who can't be touched? We have to think about all the ways we can give them a good quality of life while we work on touch very slowly. If Max needs to get to the vet, a crate will help transport him. So we're shaping him to go into a crate on his own without being handled. This is just one way we can help Max. His vet team is also a big factor!

(Sidenote: I'm a sucker for a terrier πŸ₯°πŸ«¦).

The thing about using positive reinforcement is that treats are EVERYWHERE! They're just not always edible. 😏

Gansito got to work around the dog park yesterday and due to the nice weather, it was hoppin.' πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ© In addition to food rewards, he got to do stuff he likes while other dogs were present: stuff like sniffing and playing in the water. 🌊

What's your dog's favorite non-food reinforcer? 🧐

Blog Post! πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

I've been meaning to write about this topic for awhile: What Being "Force Free" Means to Me.
https://rsdtraining.com/what-being-force-free-means-to-me/

Here's the Cliff Notes version:
πŸ’™Dogs-Should be able to say "no" and we should honor that response.
πŸ’™People-Taking tools away from clients without replacing them with a viable option is not in line with the standards I set for myself as a force free professional.
πŸ’™Social Media -I don't reinforce bad behavior by giving it attention, and I post for my clients and other dog owners looking for information.
πŸ’™Engaging with the community-I don't tell people what to do with their dogs. I will always speak up against mistreatment, however.

πŸ’™Summary: I believe working with our dogs should mirror how we wish to engage with everything and everyone around us, and I believe acceptance, choice, and collaboration are central to building a force free world.

Now go read it.

Training session? Or Photo shoot?? 🧐

Fezzik has been consistently leveling up each time he comes to work on his skills in Eugene. He's been on a park tour, starting at some of my lower-traffic spots, and working his way up to bustling, sunny parks on Memorial Day Weekend! This Collie in a German Shepherd coat lives on the coast, and his parents bring him to our busy burg to drill seeing dogs, cars, and people.

Are you out and about in the park this weekend with your dog? Be sure to get some pics! 😘

Do all dogs like petting all the time? The answer is no! To find out if your dog wants to be touched, try the Petting Consent Test:

-Gently pet your dog for 2-3 seconds.
-Stop.
-Observe what they do. Do they lean in for more? Move away? Do nothing? Look for signs that they want you to continue.

Just like with other humans, we can and should wait for consent from our dogs as much as possible. What signs can you see in this video that show that Helena is in a petting mood?

Summer is almost here! Time to practice what you'd like perfect for the warm months. β˜€οΈ

We got a new tent because our last one blew away - literally! 🌬

Emery and Helena have been camping before but it's been a bit, and they've never camped in this tent. Helena still tries to exit tents by walking through the walls. πŸ˜‚So it's time to practice before they need to sleep in it! We took some snacks and their settle mats out yesterday and spent a few minutes summer dreamin'. πŸ•

What would you like your dog to do this summer?

We've been busy over here is FosterLand! Our little one's skin is sooooo much better and she can now wear a fleece and a collar part of the time. Here's what we've been working on in this multi-dog houehold:

1.Potty training: She's having 100% success and it didn't take long! She just needs ample opportunities to go outside.

2.Settle on a mat: I don't know what we do without this exercise. It helps everyone stay in their own space. It helps everyone know what to do. It helps everyone work together calmly. It is indispensable!

3.Crate training: She's not in love with the crate, so we're focusing on making sure she knows how to use Kongs now that she's eating better so she can start to use them in her crate. Also, she sleeps right by me in her crate so that she can practice for all those hours she's asleep at night.

4.And last but not least, we're practicing being on the opposite side of a gate so that the dogs get breaks from each other and my dogs can get time with me without help from the interloper.

Would your multi-dog household benefit from one of these exercises?

Meet Tulip! 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

Tulip is a foster sweetheart with some skin issues and she's come to stay with our household for a bit. Here are some things I've observed:

🌷Tulip had enough accidents in the house the first day to tell me she's not housetrained. So we go out for potty breaks often and first thing in the morning, I carry her outside instead of letting her walk. No accidents today!
🌷Tulip is social with dogs and people, but she wants space from the dogs in my house if they are playing or if she's near her crate. Giving her that space will help her be more social in the long run!
🌷Tulip is caching. That means she is storing her food away by burying it under her blankies. This is normal, but since I don't really want a mess, I am feeding her a bit at a time when she seems hungry. This ensures there's no food leftover when my dogs wander by, thus no conflict.

Observing behavior the first few days after bringing home a foster or adopted dog can really help you get to know them and make a plan for their success. Tulip already has a potential adopter, and we're excited to help her skin heal so she can go to her forever home! 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

HELLO.

Emery would like to tell you that he had a great day at work on Sunday, where he met a new buddy named Poppy. 🌺

He's also got a PSA for those who are interested:

Some dogs have great dog skills, and still don't like all dogs! 🀯
Say it again for the people in the back, Em! 🎀

In Poppy's case, she walked very close to Emery, had neutral body language, and mostly ignored him. Sometimes they made eye contact, and she looked away. But honestly, Poppy doesn't feel this way about ALL dogs, especially her small neighbor who has a lot to say.

That's normal!

Dogs with really lovely dog skills don't have to like every other dog they come across - do you like all people? πŸ€ͺ

To keep your dog's skills sharp, have them around dogs they can do well with, so that they spend time practicing the stuff you want to see. πŸ€“

This is Pepper! 🌢

We've only been working with her and her amazing mom for a few weeks, but she's already braved the Spring weather (and subsequent dog action) at Dorris Ranch!

Pepper's plan for boosting confidence and seeing dogs and people calmly involves toys, play (does anybody have a balloon?? πŸ€Έβ€πŸŽˆ) and the 1,2,3 pattern game. She thinks it's super fun.

Have you been out to Dorris Ranch with your dog lately?

I recently had the pleasure of traveling to see the ruins at Chichen Itza in Mexico, and what did I find?

A dog sleeping at the foot of the temple. πŸ˜΄πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ•Œ

I don't know if this dog lived nearby with humans, or was out seeing the sites on her own. She certainly had the freedom to do what she wanted all day, undisturbed by anyone telling her she had to be on a leash.

We know that free-roaming dogs do not have the kind of health care that the dogs in our houses do. We also know that there is very little dog-dog conflict when dogs have this kind of freedom. βž•βž–

If your dog lived like this, how would their behavior be different? Do you think they would like aspects of a freer life? Do you think they would feel safe?

Did you get out in the PNW sun this weekend with your dogs? πŸŒ₯

Gorgeous Ambrose toured the grounds of Alton Baker Park, working on seeing dogs calmly. The parking lot was packed with sun chasers so he had a lot of opportunities to practice his skills. We also found out he loves dipping his toes in some nice cool water. 🌊

I completed my Family Dog Mediation Professional Course today and am now a Certified Family Dog Mediator!

This is a really cool course because it is taught through the lens of applied ethology and is packed with science. It is reflective of how I work with dogs and their people at this point in my career, and it was like candy to me to take it. 🍭

Did you know we can solve behavior issues without ever relying on an obedience cue?
Did you know that many things we call "behavior issues" are in fact just dogs being dogs?
Did you know it matters far more if we understand how to fulfill our dogs' needs than if we "train" them?
Have you ever thought about the fact that, as was said in this course several times, "there are no dog trainers in nature?"

Did you know that enjoying and learning dog science is far more important to me than more alphabet soup behind my name? πŸ˜‚

This is a sneak peek of my Valentine, Jasper. 😍

I always say "progress isn't linear," but for this guy, it has been! He went from very opposed to my presence during session #1 to full wiggles and seeking my attention during session #4! πŸ₯° He just needed me to go slowly. He also really benefited from working with me without his sister Sapphire, and when we added her back in today, I had two chis in my lap. 😘

Check out this adorable pup up for adoption! I have worked with Lachlan and his lovely family, and am supporting them in their choice to rehome this darling boy. Please take a moment to share with friends! Reach out if you are interested in knowing more about him. I am on board to help him in his new home.

Lachlan is a mixed breed pup (about 69 lbs, neutered male) who will greet you with a BIG hello (lots of barking is involved), and will quickly want to be your best friend. If you let him, he’ll glue himself to you on the couch/bed/etc. He definitely loves touch and feels safest when he’s pressed up against you.

He's food motivated and quick to pick up on training (we have worked with an awesome trainer on making good choices like lying down instead of freaking out). Lach tries very hard - he doesn't always make the best choice, but you can see him trying and he'll definitely get better. Though he can be loud and, at times, demanding, he hasn’t proven to be destructive at all.

Important considerations: We recommend that Lachlan potentially be in an only-dog home as he is dog selective and a resource guarder. However, he has interacted well with our older female dog, who happens to be submissive by nature (no resource guarding by her). With the right family members, he may be successful in a multi-dog home.

Lachlan is a bit loud (sounds like a hound dog) and often defaults to barking when he’s happy or frustrated … even when he’s bored. A standalone home would be best (he won't make apartment or condo neighbors happy).

He's currently working through separation anxiety (we've got a wonderful trainer that can help with that) so there will be a period where you can't leave him alone (he's not destructive, just distraught). He'll probably need to be on anti-anxiety meds for most or all of his life (he’s on fluoxetine now).

We are open to trial periods where you can spend some time with him for a few hours, then bring him back. If you find yourself falling for him, we can extend the time you spend together until you feel like you can take him and integrate him into your family.

Happy New Year! πŸ₯‚

Whether you had an amazing holiday season or you just barely made it here, welcome to 2024. πŸ™‚

I finished off 2023 kinda obsessed with my dogs' well-being in a very intentional way. We live in an amazing community of dog people and I am just one person. So because I feel I owe it to my captive animals, I am using my resources to make their lives as awesome as they can be.

πŸ• Emery and I have a long history of working on handling together, which means his learning history is with me. So we've been doing some sessions at with their amazing trainer Ellis Holland so that Emery gets some sessions under his belt with someone else doing the handling. I love watching him work with other people! 😍
πŸ•Helena and I made a trip up to last week to utilize their services to augment her behavior plan for situations that stress her out. I want the best blind baby to be as happy as possible! 🀩
πŸ•We are engaging the amazing services of for dog sitting in 2024! The CCS trainer Jesse came and gave E&H an enrichment break while I was with family for a Christmas celebration, and they'll be doing some overnights soon! (And all my clients can utilize this amazing resource too!).πŸ₯³

These dogs give me so much, so I'm making sure to give them the best that I can. I am lucky to get to embrace an amazing community of behavior professionals because it takes a village. I hope they let me know how I can help them in 2024! 😎

Harvey and Desi had a date! 😘

Dogs socializing with other dogs can look all sorts of ways, including "parallel play." They don't have to be wrestling and throwing down to be having a great time together. Both of these dudes love the water, and hanging out enjoying what they love together makes for a pretty good day. 😍

What does your dog love? How does your dog socialize? When does your dog learn from other dogs?

2 Dogs = 2 Release Cues?? πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί

I did a little experiment when teaching my dogs their release cues: I taught them different cues! I did this to avoid any confusion, but along the way, I realized more confusion could result.

🧐I could accidentally transfer the cue: If Helena always heard "ok," which is Emery's release cue, before "free," which is her release cue, she could start to respond when I say "ok." To change a cue, you say NEW CUE, OLD CUE. This could happen because she is usually released second in order to avoid her clobbering her brother when he comes out the door.

🧐What if 2024 brings a 3rd dog to our home? (mulling, just mulling). What cue are we going to use for that dog?! A 3rd cue? Or one of the ones we already use? Which one?

I get around this by using their names if I think there will be confusion, and you can tell they're doing great. But I wanna know- what would you use as a cue for a 3rd dog in this situation?? πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί

Handsome Doberman mix Walter finished up his package of sessions yesterday, just days after his first birthday! πŸ₯³

Walter had tons of success with our plan. For one thing, he's really young, and his parents saw a few areas where he needed help and got on it right away. πŸ’ͺ

The other piece of awesomeness that has led to his success is his parents' ability to follow his plan, adjust as needed, communicate with me and him, and schedule all their sessions in a timely manner. All that stuff that we sometimes forget makes or breaks our dogs' success! πŸ€“

What was his plan? In a nutshell, it's no surprise if a Doberman mix takes strangers in his space rather seriously. That's what they've been bred to do. And he is lots of Doberman, and lots of German Shepherd. That's it, no tiny percentages of breeds that may or may not affect his behavior. And we have the DNA test to prove it, no guesses based on looks. 🧐

So we set up a simple protocol that helps Walter meet strangers without having to be on guard. And once you're in, you're in. Walter is a silly, goofy puppy when he realizes you're one of the good guys! πŸ₯°

12/12/2023

Lily can be very worried about new people in her space. We've been working on building her confidence and giving her a predictable structure when new folks come over.
In our 8th session, we had a "friendly stranger" come over to help Lily practice. Check out how she chooses to greet him and then disengage from him and head back to dad. No teeth necessary! 😎

12/11/2023

Household Harmony! 😍

No matter how well everyone gets along, when you have four dogs, there's bound to be a bit of chaos. And no matter how friendly he is, do we really think it's ever a good idea to invade the space of a giant German Shepherd?? (The answer is NO).

Simple solutions are best:
🐾Install a sturdy gate.
🐾Help the dogs practice calm behavior together, slightly separated.
🐾Strive for equity, not equality-this means you may have different criteria for each dog based on their individual needs:

We'd like Ambrose the shepherd laying down because he is the biggest. We also want him farther away from the gate so no one tap dances on his space.πŸ‘―β€β™‚οΈ

We want Max the terrier on his mat because while we are working on his confidence with people, we still want him to know boundaries around other dogs' space (ie: don't step on the shepherd!). πŸ€“

We want Kevin and Dobbie to learn they don't always have to be on the same side of the gate as the others, but they'll still get something good. 😘

What criteria do you use for each dog in your multi-dog household?
