This week on the homestead! It's been such a long time since I've posted, these will be photos from the past month!
1. The new garden in front has an entire first layer of leaves over it, and about 2/3 of the second layer. After this it'll sit and hopefully break down (it'll probably need some amendments)
2. We have a new family member - meet Basil!! He's a 2 year old rescue and he is loving having lots of space for running!
3. Lots of baking, cooking, and canning- I've made cranberry sauce most recently!
4. Some lovely mushrooms growing in the woodchip paths
5. It's definitely soup season - this was an experimental seafood chowder - delicious, but a little too thin.
6. Chocolate crinkle cookies for holiday boxes
Lots of fun stuff going on around here!!

So much turkey broth! I boiled the carcass with a bunch of onion, garlic, carrots, celery, and I think there may have been a broccoli stem in there (I just keep a bag in the freezer of leftover veggie parts for just this purpose!). I added a splash of apple cider vinegar and some salt and boiled for hours and hours and then pressure canned 10 pints of broth!! I use turkey broth about the same ways I'd use chicken broth - in rice, soup base, it would even make a good gravy! This will last quite a while!

Do you stretch your turkey further by making broth?

(We also have a ton of leftover turkey in the fridge too. It will be a week of turkey for dinner!)

If it's wrong to start celebrating Christmas this early, then I don't want to be right! With the cooler weather comes indoor activities, and I'm so happy to be back at block printing!! I've got a bunch of designs all piled up and ready to go. What indoor projects are you working on?

Are you familiar with this saying? This is kind of a mantra for all the thrifty people out there! This week I've posted the 10 Commandments of Frugal Living... Less like rules, and more like guidelines, these are ways we can increase our resilience, decrease our reliance on the system, and save some money!! I think you'll notice these are different than other lists available out there- let me know what you think and whether I'm missing something!

Progress!!! I've almost got the first layer of leaves down. Hopefully I'll finish tomorrow and let it settle before I put on another layer. This is about 8 inches of leaves. The big pile in back is where I'm moving them from. I'll probably do 3 layers to make sure it ends up with plenty of soil and height enough to compost.
This area will be more permaculture garden in the spring. I'm taking suggestions for plant ideas!!

And thus it begins! I said I wasn't going to get leaves from the city anymore, but if I want to double the garden space this year, I felt like I needed to! This is half of what I ordered. Now I'm ready to get started mulching and filling beds!

Can you believe I've never seen this movie!? Well a tree fell in the storm last night taking out the power at school, so the kid and I are giving it a watch! Then we'll go see the next one in the theater when he has a half day from school this week. Fun rainy stormy day!! (And I got half of my schoolwork done this morning too!)

I wrote this article after I experienced a random act of kindness that made me literally cry. It was such a small thing, but it was so nice. It's only coincidental that it was published this week. Everyone who believes in justice, equity, and goodness are going to have to decide what their place is in the new upcoming United States. I think practicing random acts of kindness are a completely valid way to help build people up and help build community, which we will desperately need. We're all going to need to do what we're able to and what we're called to do.

I had so much fun giving a presentation on social media marketing to a group of local businesswomen! I really enjoy public speaking and can't wait to do more. Thank you for inviting me to speak to the ! Can't wait to see what's next!

Fall is such a busy time of year, getting prepared for the cold months ahead! Here are some of the things I've done recently to get ready:
1. Got a ton of pellets delivered so I'll be warm!
2. Canning everything I'm able to! I also ordered potatoes, turnips, beets, and carrots to store for winter....
3. Gathered all the last produce from the garden before the frost hits
4. I did not mulch the garden! I'm leaving all the plants for pollinators, and it'll all be mulched into the soil in the spring. I did plant garlic out there though.
5. Brought all my indoor plants inside. They won't get as much sun, but they'll be warmer!
6. Enjoying a cup of tea by my fire (now that I got pellets!)

Did I tell you about that time way back in May when I ordered a load of wood chips from ? And I was expecting a pick-up load, but I got a full on dump truck load? And then I used what I needed, which was maybe a quarter of the pile. So I tried giving it away and about 10 people came over and got some and I STILL had soooooo many!! Well, I finally decided to put a new layer over the paths in my yard and just keep doing that until they're all gone.... And I finally did it! The woodchip pile is finally gone and I can park in my spot again!! No regrets, I'm hoping I can get more next year. And daaaang, my garden looks amazing!!

I think mac and cheese is the epitome of comfort food, and with today's rain showers, it's a perfectly delicious choice! This version is creamy and thick and made with gluten-free pasta - of course you can use any pasta that you like. Enjoy!

My lunch hyperfixation right now is stuff on toast. This is pesto with scrambled eggs and micro greens. I made the pesto, and everything else is local, so that's cool too! The bread is a boule from , the eggs are from .eugene , and the microgreens are from farmers market! This was a great lunch!!
