Not my cat but a cat that I cared for on numerous occasions. She was such a sweet girl. The hardest thing about covid, for me, is not being able to see the animals that I have cared for in the past. She passed about 3 years ago from cancer, but the last year has seen the deaths of 4 animals that I loved and loved caring for while their families were out of town. It is so sad to have not have seen them one more time.
My worst situation as a pet sitter was caring for a terminally ill kitten, that I didn't know was terminally ill. He was wasting away more each time I saw him and I didn't see anything being done to ease his pain. The last time I sat him, he couldn't move, couldn't eat, couldn't drink, couldn't get to a cat box, of course. I took him to the vet when I couldn't reach the family, willing to pay for it on my dime, just to see if there was a way to help him. The vet said that he was actively in the process of dying and his body was shutting down. He said that he should be put out of his misery. I finally reached the family and told them what they said and had them speak to the vet. They cried and said, ok put him down. They were angry that I took him to the vet. I asked them, how could they leave him for me in that shape?! I feel great guilt that I took the opportunity from the family to be with him when he passed, but I also couldn't let him suffer in the way he was. We were friends, but she couldn't stay friends with me - I blame her and I don't blame her. Just as I feel about myself.
The understanding that I have with families that I pet sit for is, if their pet is sick, I take them to the vet and contact them. The pictured cat, "Spot", acted strange the first time I sat her and I took her to the vet. There was something wrong, but they couldn't put the name to it that time. I was cancer that took her down and was showing its ugly head.
If you ever ask me to sit for you, please know that I will care for your pet as if it is my own. When in Dublin, we sat for a family who went to Spain for a couple of weeks. When I met one of the cats I asked the owner if they had any kidney issues? She said no and said she would check it out when she returned, but get to the vet if necessary. The cat seemed well enough, but when she returned she took him to the vet and he was struggling with kidney issues and she thanked me so much.
I hope as covid winds down you'll consider me to care for your furry/feathered/scaled, etc family as I would my own.
If your pet is terminally ill and unable to function, please stay home with them, it isn't fair to leave them to someone else - I was scarred by this, as was my young daughter.
