This sweet girl was brought in by one of our volunteers for us to take a look at her eye! This stray kitty, we named Softie, was spayed here a while ago, but the difficult life of a community cat does not end once they can no longer reproduce.

Turns out the eye its self (at least for now) is fine. It appears she experienced a traumatic event to her face and the swelling and discharge is from an infection caused by a bite wound. The infection is in facial bones.

Softie received pain and anti-inflammatory, and several antibiotics to help her heal from this traumatic injury and infection. We will recheck her condition in a week.

Our feline emergency fund is running very low! Please, if you can spare even a couple bucks to this fund, cats like her would be forever thankful!

We never, ever want to let community cats like her suffer. Maintaining funds in this account allow us to never have to think twice about treating cats like Softie!

Donations can be made directly our PayPal account via our website, spayhumboldt.org or can be called or mailed in.

Adoption Highlight:

Fiona is still searching for her forever home! She is an approximately 4 month old tortoise shell. Fiona was born into a feral colony and trapped when she was 3 months old. Fiona is super cuddly and loving, and will even drool when she is extra comfy.

Fiona would do best in a relatively quite home because of her more shy nature. She would make great lap cat and cuddle companion.

Her foster family has reported she gets along wonderfully with her 2 adult cats and doesn't mind dogs, large or small.

All adopted cats and kittens come spay/neutered, health checked by our vet, initial vaccines, dewormed, flea treatment, initial vaccines, microchipped and tested for FELV/FIV. She will also come as an established patient so you could bring her here for continued routine care at our clinic.

Today is National Non Profit Day, 2024!

For those who are new to our social pages, Humboldt Spay/Neuter Network (HSNN, SpayHumboldt! and Humboldt Spay/Neuter Clinic) has been a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization since 2003. We are supported by community donations, private grant funding, and service co-pays. We started as a grass-roots voucher program, subsidizing the cost of spay and neuter surgeries at full-service vet offices.

In 2014, we opened our original spay/neuter clinic on Jacobs Ave. Having a space to preform surgeries and wellness treatments "in-house" allowed us to extend funding, helping us to reach more animals in our community.

Fast forward to 2019, we moved to our current location, 2606 Myrtle Ave. in Eureka. This larger space has allowed our organization to grow and expand, now offering many other services beyond spay/neuter (which is still our main priority 🥰). **Fun Fact: HSNN has fixed over 27,000 dogs and cats since our clinic first opened in 2014**

Our programs include:
🐾Spay/neuter for dogs and cats, serving 4,500 animals a year
🐾Trap-Neuter-Return program for feral and stray cats, serving 1,000 cats a year
🐾Wellness and dental programs for rescues, and qualifying families and their pets
🐾Humane Euthanasia to all animals in our community
🐾Foster and adoption program for kittens born in feral colonies

HSNN is a small organization in terms of staff and volunteers but that doesn't stop us. We are passionate about our mission, dedicating our lives to improving animal welfare, and reducing suffering and pet overpopulation! We are excited to see what the next year, and decade have in store for HSNN! We hope you join us!

If you have any questions about our services, how you can help and where to donate, hop over to our website, spayhumboldt.org or give us a ring, 707-442-7729.

Thank you to all of our supporters past, present and future! We would not be here without you!

Roof Update:

We have run into some delays and increased costs because of rot, and improperly installed original decking. While unexpected, we are very happy they notified us and fixed these issues, helping us ensure longest life possible with our new roof!

With that said, we are nearing the finish line. Our clinic is looking mighty fine, thanks to Above Board Construction.

First photo is the current state of our roof and following photos demonstrate the rot and "wonkiness" of our clinic roof after the initial tear down phase.

We cannot thank our supporters enough for helping us make this massive project possible! We LOVE our community!

Roof construction has started! We are so blessed to be able to complete this project before winter!
Our community helped us put this plan in motion and Above Board Construction is helping us put it to action!

What better a way to celebrate international cat day, than an update on the project that will allow us to continuing serving thousands of cats a year.

We are so thankful for all who donated towards this project. Stay tunned for more updates and final completion!

Can you tell Fiona was living her life in a feral colony less than a month ago?

Fiona was rescued and placed in our program three weeks ago. She was around 3 months old when trapped and was past the "prime age of socializing" but we never gave up on her!

LOOK AT HER NOW!! She loves to snuggle! This girl will make someone a wonderful lap cat! If you are looking for a kitten that does not have the young kitten energy, than Fiona is your girl! She is mellow, quite and enjoys pets and cuddles. Plus her striking orange eyes match the orange diamond on her forhead.

Consider bringing Fiona home and giving her the life she deserves!

All kittens come spayed/neutered, health checked by our vet, tested for FELV/FIV, microchipped, flea treated, dewormed and inital vaccines.

Email [email protected] to get started.

We will be closed for roof construction August 5-13th, but adoption meet and greets can be coordinated!

Fiona is the 48th kitten in our program this year!

**Update: we have added our Amazon Wishlist here: https://a.co/30XrAxe
Our pet food pantry has proven to be a valuable community resource over the past several months.

Many community members have said that this food allowed them to feed their pets for several nights before their next paycheck came in.

We would love to make sure this resource stays available to people and pets in need. If you have dog/cat food or supplies you would like to donate, please stop by our office.

**GRAPHIC CONTENT:

A stray kitty was brought in today by one of our fabulous volunteers for a neuter and to assess his injured eye. This kitty turned out to be neutered already but we did sedate him to explore the injury to his eye. Turns out he had a foxtail lodged deep in his eye-socket!

The foxtail was removed and our volunteer will keep him at her house for medication and monitoring. He will come back for a re-check in a couple weeks to check on his healing process and assess next steps!

When you make donations to our feline emergency fund, these are the animals you are helping. This community cat might not have had the opportunity to have his eye injury helped without our clinic or our emergency medical fund.

All donations made to our feline emergency fund go directly to paying for treatments for community cats that otherwise would be left to suffer with those injuries.

Last photo shows open wound!

Meet Peggy, she and her brother, Jack Sparrow, were trapped at house in Eureka. Peggy was trapped with only three legs, her hind leg was severed at the equivalent to the shin bone. At the time she was trapped, her injury had healed over, leading our volunteer to initially think perhaps it was a birth defect.

Peggy and her brother came in for dewormer, vaccines, flea treatment and for a brief exam to see if her leg was painful. To everyone's surprise the bone had punctured through the healed skin and was now an urgent matter! The compound fracture was fully exposed.

Dr. Ott successfully removed the remaining part of her leg to ensure Peggy would never have to endure this level of pain again!

Her care has proven to exceed our funds for urgent foster care. Peggy, of course deserved this opportunity...it was her only chance!

If you or someone you know can donate towards her medical bills, that would be greatly appreciated!

People can make a donation towards Peggy's care through our PayPal account:

Donations are also accepted directly through the clinic via phone or check.

Every kitten that has entered our foster/adoption program was born/destined to be another feral cat on the landscape. Each cat recieved a second chance at life because they were in the right place (trap)/ right time or because community members set out to make sure they did not end up as another feral cat statistic.

It is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching to look into their sweet eyes and realize they made it out alive and get a chance to be a beloved house cat and in that same instance see how many cats will never get that opportunity.

Help be a part of the solution: spay/neuter your animals, always adopt and never abandon your pets.

Consider adding one of these sweet girls to your family today! A rescue cat is a thankful cat!

Calendula, Camellia, Cosmos and Carnation have had very little interest. Which is surprising because they are so adorable and chunky! Give them a chance to steal your heart!

This year we have also rescued over 35 kittens from a life as a feral cat. These numbers would not be possible without the support and contributions from our volunteers, community and donors!

Thank you to everyone who have dedicated your time, effort and funds to help make our community better. Trap Neuter Return really works!

Calendula:

A flower that typically symbolizes new beginnings and grace. Calendula certainly shows these traits in her origin story. She and her sisters were trapped in Ferndale several weeks ago and since then has flourished in a wonderful group of kittens. Calendula was the spunkiest of the group when she first arrived but her desire for human love out weighted her natural instincts. She is now an absolute purr-machine and enjoys to be held and kissed.
