Happy Valentine's Day! ❣Show your pets some extra love while keeping them safe.
A few Valentine's pet safety tips:
- Keep lilies away from cats as they are toxic and watch for rose thorns your pets can cut themselves on.💐
-Be mindful of lit candles and decorations that can be knocked over.
-Secure ribbons, strings and wrappers to avoid accidental ingestion.
-Keep chocolate, candy, and treats with xylitol out of reach.🍫
Wishing you and your pets a safe and sweet Valentines Day!
Lets see some photos of your beloved pets

P.S- Happy Birthday Dr. Bloom! We love and appreciate you 🎂

Staff/pet Highlight ✨

Hi I'm Christi!
I am from Chester County, PA and graduated from Downingtown East High School in 2004.
Went to Pulse Paul Mitchell Academy for Cosmetology after graduating and living in Philadelphia for a year.
Realized working with animals was my true passion and have been working in boarding facilities, daycares, and shelters for 13 years, and have been working in the vet field for just over one year now. Have had pets of all kinds my whole life.
Hubs and I traveled across country for a month in an rv with our fur babes for our honeymoon when moving here. We moved to Humboldt county in 2015.

I have a few furbabies 🐾
Daisy, puggle, 12.5 years old, moved here with us from PA. Adopted when she was one year old.
Indie and Tiva, shorthair bros, 6 years old, adopted from HSNN when they were 2 month old teeny babies. both obsessed with their sister, Daisy.
Natasha, our outdoor kitty that we "adopted" after being abandoned. Not sure of age, but the sweetest little girl after lots of sweet talk and food motivation. She is a spoiled queen with quite a palace.

February is Pet Dental Health month, it may not sound exciting, but it’s one of the most important months. Why? Because our pets have teeth and need looking after. Our pet’s dental health is vital for overall health and quality of life. A diseased or painful mouth can prevent your pets from enjoying daily activities, reduce appetite and lead to more severe health conditions. 🐈

Dental disease is one of the most common diseases in dogs and cats. More than 80% of pets will have some sort of dental disease by 3 years old. Common signs of dental disease include; swollen gums, decreased appetite, chewing on one side, pawing at mouth, behavioral changes, etc. It's important to have your pets dental health checked yearly to ensure there are no issues and prevent issues from happening later in life. 🦷

If you feel your pet is having any of these issues or would like to speak to your veterinarian about dental health, please reach out to us to make an appointment. For more information on preventive dental health, click the link below.

We have received concerns regarding the Avian influenza A (H5N1) and have following the outbreaks across the United States. The American Veterinary Medical Association recently posted information regarding the outbreaks and states below:

Since the outbreak in March 2024, dozens of cats are now known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, big cats in the wild and zoos.🐾

Important information to be aware of:

How do cats become infected?🐓
Raw food, colostrum, and unpasteurized dairy products (cream)
Exposure to infected wild birds or poultry
Exposure to people who work on affected farms or to clothing or other fomites

What are the clinical signs of H5N1 in cats?
Neurological signs (circling, tremors, seizures, ataxia)
Respiratory signs
Severe depression
Illness may start with loss of appetite, lethargy, fever and then quickly progressing. If your cat is experiencing any of these symptoms please contact us.

How can H5N1 infection be prevented in cats?🥛
Refrain from feeding cats any dairy products or unpasteurized colostrum
Thoroughly cook meat before feeding, avoid raw-meat diets
Keep cats indoor to prevent exposure to birds and other wildlife

We are taking all precautions to minimize the disease spread, please let us know if your cat is experiencing any of these signs. If you have any questions please reach out to the front desk.

The ongoing epizootic of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza type A H5N1) has sparked concerns among health officials because of the virus’s ability to infect diverse animal species, including pigs, big cats, and humans, raising fears of a potential pandemic.

Staff/Pet Highlight ✨

Hiii I'm Adriana. I was born in Honduras, spent the first four years of my life living in the Dominican Republic before moving with my family to San Diego. I went to HSU where I studied politics, lol, but decided after college that what I really wanted to do with my life is help animals. I have been in the veterinary field for about 7 years. I started as a kennel assistant, worked my way up, did an online vet tech course and earned my RVT license in 2020. I spend my free spending as much time as I can with my dogs. We enjoy snuggling on the couch, walking the local trails and beaches, and sitting outside at a coffee shop on a nice day.☕

I have 2 basset hounds, Reuben (9 years) and Seymour (1 year). Reuben recently had his left eye removed due to glaucoma, but he doesn't seem to miss it. He is the happiest, sweetest, snuggliest guy until its close to his dinner time. Then he becomes the world's biggest food bully.🐾

Seymour is all gas- no breaks. The dude has endless energy, we think he is a broken basset. He goes to daycare where he parties with his friends during the week and then comes home to continue the party. When he finally settles down he loves to snuggle his big brother and use his butt as a pillow.

It's the rainy season here in Humboldt County which means more mud, streams and puddles! 🌧

Leptospirosis, commonly referred to as “lepto”, is a contagious bacterial disease that can lead to severe liver and/or kidney disease. Leptospira, the bacteria that causes leptospirosis, is carried through urine of infected wild animals (rodents, deer, squirrels, foxes, etc.). We consider Humboldt County to be a rural area, meaning there is more wildlife present and higher possibility of contamination. Dogs contract lepto when bacteria enters the body through mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) and through open wounds/cuts. Risk factors include swimming or drinking from contaminated streams, soil and puddles, exposure to wildlife and coming in contact with infected animals. 🦌

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has updated their guidelines and has officially classified the leptospirosis vaccine to a CORE vaccine. This disease is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted to humans, it’s important to protect our pets and people by vaccinating. It is recommended to start vaccinating puppies around 12 weeks of age, two doses are required for this vaccination and then should be boostered annually. If you are interested in getting your dog vaccinated, please reach out! 💉

The following are clinical signs in dogs, but some may show no signs at all: 🐾
Fever
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain
Jaundice (yellow discoloration of skin)
If your dog is showing any signs consistent of leptospirosis please inform your veterinarian.

If you have any questions regarding the vaccine please reach out to the front desk.📱

The veterinarians at BAH are aware of the concerns about Librela brought forward to the FDA by concerned dog owners. The FDA did roll out a report listing perceived or associated adverse events related to use of Librela in dogs. The FDA did not make any new reports against the use of Librela in dogs. We, as veterinarians, still feel that Librela is an appropriate medication for osteoarthritis in appropriate canine candidates. If you have any new concerns, or feel your dog is experiencing any adverse events from librela, please call to report the event and make an appointment with your veterinarian for further treatment options.
