Companion Animal Foundation Our Community Adoption Center is a place for enjoyment and education. We love being able to provide this unique experience to our community!

Companion Animal Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal rescue organization formed in 2002 in response to the high euthanasia rate of adoptable animals in Humboldt County. This is where we keep our healthy adoptable kittens (and pups) so that the public can help them socialize by visiting during open hours. The Community Adoption Center is currently open to the public from 12-4 on Wednesday, 1-

6 on Thursday, 12-4 on Friday and 11-3 on Saturday. Our hours change in the winter (usually in January) so please call us at 707-296-4629 to check that we are open before you come by. We often have puppies so if you’re looking to adopt a pup, please call ahead to check and see what we have. The puppies are available to visit during the same hours. We are more than happy to let adult visitors take the puppies on walks if they have time! Visiting is available to all ages, but anyone under 16 years of age needs to be accompanied by an adult guardian. All adult visitors need to provide a photo ID before entering the adoption room and please plan on leaving your photo ID with a staff person if you want to take our puppies for a walk.

Hey Humboldt. Companion Animal Foundation has about 14 orange or orange/white new baby kittens (18 kittens total so far with one more mama about to give birth). The mamas are the sweetest and after spaying, vaccinating, microchipping and all the other things we do for these sweet ones, they will need adopting too. This latest litter with orange mama was born yesterday so it will be a minute before they’re available. Please share with anyone you think might be interested.

Also summer camp sign-ups are starting. For the Love of Animals humane education program is offering one program for 8-10 year olds (last week of June) and two programs for 11-16 year olds (second and third weeks of July) If you have an animal crazy child, this is the perfect program. You can call 707-296-4629 for more details.

Calling all Animal Lovers. Do you have something special in regards to animals that you would like to share such as a passion and knowledge of bunnies or chicken, snakes or horses? Our humane education summer program is around the corner and we always love to welcome those in our community to be guest speakers on an animal you are passionate about. We are also looking for an herbalist to make some healing salves for animals with our young animal enthusiasts. So many things to discuss and learn about❤️

April 9-15 was National Dog Bite Prevention Week! (It's never too late to educate)

Just in Eureka alone, we have had 40 cases of animal bites in one year, with potentially more that go unreported.

Although its is nationally reported that children are the ones most often bitten, please be respectful of your neighborhood postmen and women! It is believed that nearly 6,000 USPS employees are bitten by dogs every year while on their routes.

"Nearly 85 million nice dogs…but any dog can bite.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week takes place during the second full week of April each year, and focuses on educating people about preventing dog bites.

With an estimated population of nearly 85 million dogs living in U.S. households, millions of people—most of them children—are bitten by dogs every year. The majority of these bites, if not all, are preventable."

Here are some ways you can help prevent dog bites!
"•Make sure your pet is healthy.
•Take it slow and listen to your dogs warning signs.
•Educate yourself in positive training techniques and devote time to interact with your dog.
•Get outside for leash training and allow your dog to socialize.
•Be responsible about approaching other people's pets. Ask permission from the owner before approaching a dog, and look for signs that the dog wants to interact with you. Sometimes dogs want to be left alone, and we need to recognize and respect that."

For more information, please check out their website and help spread prevention awareness!

ADOPTER STORY: Auggie was adopted during the pandemic and is turning three this year. She is complete love and has grown so much since she was just a little puppy being taken care of by CAF. She was so anxious and going through such a transitional period, but she blossomed and is the sweetest girl in the world. Thank you so much for always providing your animals with such a wholesome place and foundation for the next stage of their lives in their furever homes!

Our Story

We have two thrift stores located in Sunny Brae and in Blue Lake. The money raised in these stores helps us rescue and care for animals until we find permanent homes for them. We offer spay/neuter assistance for people on limited incomes, provide humane trapping methods for feral cats, run humane education programs, and a number of other services to the public.

All of our work, from adoptions to humane education, is aimed at alleviating animal suffering in Humboldt County by providing people with the knowledge needed to be responsible, compassionate caretakers for our animal companions. We believe that when you provide people with the means to make better choices, they make them!

DONATION GUIDELINES:

While we would love to accept all items, a staff member must look through incoming donations to ensure they will sell.
