Companion Animal Foundation

Companion Animal Foundation Our Community Adoption Center is a place for enjoyment and education. We love being able to provide this unique experience to our community!

Companion Animal Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal rescue organization formed in 2002 in response to the high euthanasia rate of adoptable animals in Humboldt County. This is where we keep our healthy adoptable kittens (and pups) so that the public can help them socialize by visiting during open hours. The Community Adoption Center is currently open to the public from 12-4 on Wednesday, 1-

6 on Thursday, 12-4 on Friday and 11-3 on Saturday. Our hours change in the winter (usually in January) so please call us at 707-296-4629 to check that we are open before you come by. We often have puppies so if you’re looking to adopt a pup, please call ahead to check and see what we have. The puppies are available to visit during the same hours. We are more than happy to let adult visitors take the puppies on walks if they have time! Visiting is available to all ages, but anyone under 16 years of age needs to be accompanied by an adult guardian. All adult visitors need to provide a photo ID before entering the adoption room and please plan on leaving your photo ID with a staff person if you want to take our puppies for a walk.

That is Toto on the lower right. She recently had a litter of four puppies, and we believe she is probably a Cairn Terrier or Scotty. One of the puppies is probably spoken for, but there are three more, and we would like Toto to be adopted with at least one of the puppies. We will be open Wednesday from noon to four, same on Thursday and Friday. Saturday from 11 to 3.Come on down and say hi.

This holiday season, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible members of our community who have opened their hearts and homes to our furry friends. One of our adopters, Hannah Pereira, and her family, have shared their heartwarming adoption story to remind us of the joy and love that rescue animals bring into our lives.

“My family adopted Samson, AKA Sam, and his brother Simba from CAF when I was just 3 years old. I even got to help name them! While Simba decided to move in with the neighbors and their many lady cats early on, Sam stayed with us for nearly 20 wonderful years.

Sam was scrappy and sassy – he didn’t hesitate to put dogs (of any size) in their place – but he had a soft side for his humans. One of my favorite memories is how he would join our family on neighborhood walks, just like one of us.

Though he was an outdoor cat for most of his life, during the pandemic (and as he aged), Sam spent more time inside, curling up in the strangest spots. I had already moved out, but like many college students, I returned home for a while. I’m so grateful for that bonus time with Sam before he passed in 2023.

Thank you, CAF, for bringing Sam into our lives. He left pawprints on our hearts forever.”

Thank you Hannah and family for sharing, we love hearing our animal success stories!

Our Story

We have two thrift stores located in Sunny Brae and in Blue Lake. The money raised in these stores helps us rescue and care for animals until we find permanent homes for them. We offer spay/neuter assistance for people on limited incomes, provide humane trapping methods for feral cats, run humane education programs, and a number of other services to the public.

All of our work, from adoptions to humane education, is aimed at alleviating animal suffering in Humboldt County by providing people with the knowledge needed to be responsible, compassionate caretakers for our animal companions. We believe that when you provide people with the means to make better choices, they make them!

DONATION GUIDELINES:

While we would love to accept all items, a staff member must look through incoming donations to ensure they will sell.
