It’s our 2nd “Ranch-Aversary” today! 🎉

Two years ago we purchased a beautiful horse property and established the +J Ranch. The former owner created a very functional layout, giving the acres a lot of “bang for the buck” with well-thought-out stalls, outbuildings, and turnout paddocks. Over the past 2 years, we’ve given the property a “glow up” with several improvements and additions:

🪴 Added landscaping and a giant staghorn fern named Annabelle
🎨 Repainted the main barn, tack room, and feed room to a new color scheme that matches the +J Ranch brand palette
🪚 Took the tack room from a shell to fully finished inside with fancy wallpaper and individual tack cubbies
🪵 Replaced the first paddock with 4 board fence
🔨 Built a new solid board, 7’ high, 50’ wide roundpen
🚜 Put in a new base in the arena and roundpen
🔪 Added an outdoor kitchen with cedar gazebo for , and started a new podcast that we film at the +J: Rooted in Flavor
🤠 Welcomed David Sowers () as our trainer-in-residence along with his training horses

We are excited to see what the next year brings!

Happy Birthday to this pretty girl! 🐎🧁💜

When I first saw Lola for sale on a Facebook post the Summer of 2022, I just wanted her so much. She was gangly and needed groceries, but she was beautiful. Like Elvis (her half brother), she was meant to be ours.

She arrived in Florida from California the week before a hurricane, which caused places to flood that hadn’t flooded historically, including the farm she was boarding at. Quite a welcome to the sunshine state - water everywhere, mosquitoes out of control, crazy FL weather! She moved to the +J (before it was the +J) where it was high and dry and Bear and Ernesto had her looking like a brand new horse in 10 days - one of the major reasons we decided to purchase the property from Bear rather than finding a new place to board her and Elvis.

Earlier this year, horrible, gut wrenching news came out about the ranch in CA that we purchased Lola from (and that owned the stud that both she and Elvis are out of) - a horrific case of severe animal neglect and unspeakable atrocities. The county seized over 100 horses, but unfortunately there were many, many horses that did not hold on long enough to be rescued. We are thankful we saved her and are able to give her a great life - she’s very special to us for a lot of reasons.

The moral of the story: buy the horse! You may not ever know if they are saving you or you’re saving them, but if they are supposed to be in your life, don’t ignore your gut feelings.

We are coming up on the 1 year mark of “Annabelle” joining the +J! She got lots of love and attention this afternoon from several ranch visitors. We’re so thankful she calls our place home now and we cherish her deeply.

Closing out 2024 with lots of great things and one small bit of sadness.

December welcomed new boarding and training horses, the continuation of capital improvements with paddock #1’s new fencing, the round pen moving to a new location and getting new dirt, and lots of vaulting and training happening!

surprised me with a new saddle for my birthday and Christmas - the only acceptable “combo gift”!

And my favorite horsewoman, childhood trainer, and long time friend passed away unexpectedly. She taught me so much and I especially owe my “seat” to her. May she break all the broncs in heaven, rope steers that run straight, watch her old horse Pokey graze, and play endless games of fetch with her past pups.

November simultaneously feels like it was 6 months and only 6 days ago! It was a busy month, but I neglected to capture very many pics of the Kodak moments. 🤦🏻‍♀️

David () is bringing the young horses along, working the grown up horses, and went to shows. We are so thankful to have him working out of the +J - he’s found a great stride with our team and doing an awesome job with all the horses, including our own naughty Elvis!

Our barn kitty, that we inherited with the purchase of the property, only comes out for David’s daughter. She’s nowhere to be found otherwise. 🫣🐱

More capital improvement projects started the last day of the month and will be featured in December’s recap, and 3 very talented reining horses moved into the barn this week. Lots of milestones and accomplishments to close out the very short year!
