❄️ January, on average, is the coldest month in Central Florida with the highest chance of frost and freezing conditions. It’s also the month that we begin seeding our warm season crops for the Florida spring season!

πŸ₯¬ Continue seeding & transplanting your cool season crops into the garden in January.

🌱 Start seeds of warm season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants with cold weather protection 8- 6 weeks before your average last frost date.

🫘 Depending on your location in Central Florida and your average last frost date, you may also want to get a head start to beat the heat and major pests by starting seed of additional warm season crops like corn and cucurbits such as cantaloupe, cucumber, squash, & watermelon early. Start seeds in trays/containers 2 - 4 weeks before your last frost. Transplant out after hardening off & once the risk of frost has passed, or be sure to use covering methods during cold nights if you plant out your starts early. You can wait for next month to start the above crops if your average last frost date falls in late Feb-March or, alternatively, just direct seed in the garden after your risk of frost has passed.

🌱 Time to Start Your Warm-Season Nightshade Seeds 🌱

Prepare for your Central Florida spring garden now by starting your nightshade family favorites such as: tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, groundcherry, and ashwagandha.

Start seeds of these indoors or outdoors with winter protection from late December through January to ensure healthy transplants to plant in your garden once your risk of frost has passed.

In Central Florida (Zone 9b), we typically transplant these crops between mid-February and mid-March, depending on the predicted long-range forecast. Starting seeds now gives your plants a strong head start, maximizing the frost-free spring growing season before summer's extreme heat sets in.

🌟 Find our Florida-trialed & Florida-grown tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, groundcherry, and ashwagandha seeds at seedthestars.etsy.com!

🌼 Stay tuned for updates on new additions and familiar favorites once our germination tests are complete.

πŸ‘€ Find seasonally-appropriate, locally-adapted, Florida-grown seeds at seedthestars.etsy.com

πŸ₯¬ A diverse variety of leafy vegetables, herbs, peas, and root crops thrive during this month in Central Florida's cool growing season.

πŸ… While December is ideal for planting cool-season seeds, transplants, and bulbs, it’s also a great time to start planning for warm-season spring crops. Begin seeds for frost-sensitive, warm-season favorites like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, and ground cherries in late December through early January. Use seed-starting media in trays or containers and maintain a consistent temperature for germination. Seed heating mats work well for this, but a warm spot, such as the top of your refrigerator, can also work!

🌱Once most of your seeds sprout above the soil, ensure they receive enough access to light. If you are keeping your seedlings indoors until transplanting after your risk of frost, using a grow light directly overhead will provide your light requirements. Alternatively, you can germinate seeds in cell trays indoors and move them outside during the day, bringing them back inside during cool nights. This method eliminates the need for grow lights and acclimates seedlings to outdoor conditions.

πŸ§„ December is a great time to plant out prevernalized soft neck garlic. There are some great local garlic sources such as our friends at The Reid Farm(Deland) & Noble Roots(Eustis).

🫐 Winter-hardy fruit trees and berry bushes can also be planted now, though it's best to wait to plant tropical and subtropical fruit trees once the risk of frost has passed. Keeping your cold sensitive plants in pots over winter will allow you to move them to a protected area during nights when there is a risk of frost.

XL Guyana Yard Long Beans are still going strong as we head into December! πŸ’ͺ

This late planting struggled a bit after the hurricanes but made an amazing comeback.

We love this variety for its tender, young pods and the magical mature pods that can actually grow up to a yard long!
