One of our placements, K9 Max, thriving in his new home as a single purpose detection K9

We know everyone has been patiently waiting for an update on our K9 program.

K9 Deputy Max is still in training and doing great! Max gets to bust out of training on the weekends and spend that time with his partner, Deputy Hill. During that time, he enjoys getting to play ball and tug-a-war with whoever will give him the attention! Max and Deputy Hill have a few more weeks to go before they will be certified.

We are looking forward to getting Max with us full time, He is already spoiled at the Sheriff's Department when he gets to visit with us. As soon as both complete their certification, we will post an update.

About Our Private Training Program

Our personalized, one-on-one training is our most effective course. Your pup will get their trainerā€™s undivided attention without any distractions, and the training will be tailored to their needs, skills, and personality.

We will meet with you in a dog-friendly public space for training, or can come straight to your home to train your pup there. We can even train in multiple locations, which can help ensure that your dog has fully mastered a skill by performing it in more challenging environments.

While this is our most expensive option, your dog will benefit from constant, focused attention, and the course can be entirely customized to help you reach your training goals. While itā€™s not always the best option for dogs that need help with socialization (though this can be somewhat remedied by training in public), overall, itā€™s the best program to help your dog truly master commands and behaviors rapidly and successfully.

Is Private Training Your Perfect Fit?

As effective as our private training program is, no program is right for every dog. Youā€™ll want to consider your and your pupā€™s needs, goals, and preferences to determine if itā€™s the best fit for you both.

Would your pup benefit from focused, one-on-one attention?
If your dog would do better in a setting centered entirely on them, with minimal distractions, private training is the best way to ensure that.

Do you need a customizable program?
In a one-on-one setting, your trainer can work with you to create a custom training program built entirely around your dog.

Does your pup need help with socialization?
If your pup needs to work on socializing with other dogs, then our group training program may be a better fit.

Are you able to train at set times?
While we try to work around your schedule, private training does require you to be available at the agreed-upon times.

I believe that the general public sees all dog trainers as the same.
A dog trainer is a dog trainer like a plumber is a plumber.
There aren't "high end" dog trainers.
Except that there are.

There are dog trainers who have invested years and dollars into developing their craft.
And there are dog trainers who decide it sounds fun and they want to make some money- it can't be that hard can it?

Being a dog trainer is a lifestyle- it isn't just a job.
Being an excellent dog trainer means you are with your clients every step of the way.
You are a support for them.
The industry truly is buyer beware and the problem is that a lot of dog trainers look the same on the outset- they copy each others websites and verbiage, social media content gets recycled etc.
Its really hard to know what's what.
People stretch their qualifications.
So how can you figure it out?

- [ ] How long have they been around?
- [ ] Testimonials- how many are there? If there are bad ones- take it with a grain of salt but also- what are they saying? Does it seem legitimate?
- [ ] References- you can also ask for references! Ideally, clients that have struggled with similar things you're dealing with (or perhaps the same breed etc)
- [ ] Pricing- cheaper isn't better. But also be careful with those that charge market rates (or a leeeeetttle bit less).
- [ ] What are their qualifications? Dive into what they actually mean. Where did they learn about XYZ?
- [ ] Ask questions- can they explain their training plan to you? Can they explain why they do or don't do certain things?
- [ ] Their own dogs- do they live with their own dogs the way you want to live with yours? Do they have recall? Are there dogs reactive? Do they live like pet dogs or are they kennelled constantly?
- [ ] Proof- do you see videos of their dogs or client dogs living life, doing things? Or just posed photos of dogs in care? Not good enough for me.
- [ ] Vibe- do you get a good vibe? Does anything in your gut stop you? You should get along well with this person. You should trust them. Does it seem good to be to true? Are they following through on their word and commitments?

Kimber, Jaco, and Trauma got their first chiropractic adjustments today.

Thank you so much Williamson Chiropractic for doing a wonderful job with our dogs. We definitely highly recommend.

Kimber got her PDC at our first PSA trial today, super proud of my girl.

What a pleasure to own and train such an amazing dog!!!

Some things go exactly how you think they will. Some don't. Today was both.

9 months, 2 weeks, and 3 days ago, without ever having so much as housetrained a dog, I brought home a 3 1/2 year old Dutch Shepherd with the intention of making him my first working dog. I had no breed experience, no training experience, and no clue what I was getting myself into.

Today, Jaco and I passed our PDC (on the shoulders of a 5 second third attempt "out") After uncountable hours of learning, thousands and thousands of dollars spent, and more cross country road trips than I care to remember, I'm caught up in a full blown addiction. Looking forward to many more trials with this dog, and with my younger dogs waiting on their turn.

This week, Tier 1 K9 made another trip down to Dogma Academy for Dog Trainers, LLC , where we were very privileged to have our remaining puppies from A litter (Jaco x Karma) tested by
a true pioneer of this industry, Jonathan Katz.

We were incredibly proud of all of the pups, and especially of Green (bicolor male) and Orange (red female) who were selected by Jonathan to help educate the next generation of trainers at Dogma and elsewhere.

We can't wait to see how these two, and the rest of our litter, develops in the hands of skilled trainers. If you haven't yet, please go give our Tier 1 K9 page a like! Instagram and Tiktok coming soon as well.

We got a call Wednesday about a 7 month old puppy named Sita that has bit one of the neighbors and has to be rehomed immediately. It was an ļæ¼incident after the puppy started spiraling after a visit with a bad experience with a trainer. Of course we agreed to go get her because we have a soft spot for a belgian malinois.

Sita has been one of the most heartwarming also heartbreaking dogs we have got in. She had a really bad experience with the first ā€œtrainerā€ experience she had. Their task that was asked of the trainer was to put basic obedience on her. What they received in quotes from the owner ā€œ Their methodology was to show dominance, be the alpha in the relationship. The only time the trainer was ever to physically touch her was when he threw her to the ground and forced her to calm down from defending me and her home. The other idea was to tie her to the foot post of our chaise so she couldnā€™t have free rein of the apartment. Lastly him taking her for a walk, involved him dragging her around the kitchen. She basically refused to go with him anywhere. ā€œ
They had a second trainer out to hopefully repair the issues that had created from the first trainer. He was only able to get her to not try to bite him by using the e collar.

On Thursday we first met Sita, she was super defensive barking and lunging at us. William Dodson and I just looked away talked to the owners, very quickly she got quiet and laid down. One of the owners were amazed that she stopped barking telling us ā€œthis is first time with any trainer she didnā€™t bark the whole timeā€. Even with her calming down we knew there was no way we were going to be able to touch her in the house. We asked the owner to take her outside where in about 10 mins she was able to hand the leash off to Will. Will and I both able to walk on her a loose leash able to pet her even give some belly rubs.

Fast forward two days later once she trusted us she is a completely different dog. We canā€™t wait to see her blossom into a super neat dog. Her Akc papers are posted below this helped us figure out the best route to take to bring out the best in her. Genetics play a big part how puppies are raised and trained. Always do you homework when it comes to buying puppies. ļæ¼

Unpopular opinion:
Know when to back off.
Dogs are not machines. Make sure you find a trainer/decoy that knows when to push, and when to back off.
Get you a trainer/decoy that pays attention to your dog and their needs.
Some dogs are such people pleasers, such hard workers, so trusting and willing, that they'd follow people into their own breaking point; and the wrong people will push them past it.

Make sure you find a trainer/decoy that recognizes the limits in your dog, and doesn't try to experiment with their mental or physical soundness for faster results.

Find a trainer/decoy that isnā€™t just doing it for the views.

They cannot speak, but the right trainers/decoys can still hear them. Make sure they listen.

A few days ago, we took a gamble on a young Dutch Shepherd with a history of handler aggression. A genetic freakshow (90+ pounds even being slightly underweight) with extreme drive, he's been a challenge so far, but a fun learning experience. Looking forward to seeing what we can do with him.
