Are you and your pets firework ready?

As we prepare for 4th of July celebrations, make sure your pets are too. Here are some tips on how to help your pet this coming week:

-Make sure pets are microchipped and wearing collars in case they spook and run off.
-Keep pets inside after sundown when fireworks are more likely. Do potty breaks and dinner before dark.
-Close windows and blinds to block out noise.
-Turn on the TV or music as distraction.
-Have a safe area for your pets to hang out and/or hide. Blackout the area for a more secure feeling.
-If you think your pet may need some extra support, ask your vet about pheromone diffusers and calming meds.

It’s a hot one out there!
Here are some reminders on how to keep your pet safe, cool, and comfortable this summer:

-Give your pets unlimited access to fresh water and shade.
-Never leave your pets in the car- temperatures can become deadly very quickly.
-Take walks/runs during cooler hours, i.e in the mornings and evenings.
-Avoid hot surfaces that can burn paws, such as asphalt! Consider protective booties for your pet.
-Short-muzzle breeds, such as pugs and bulldogs, are at higher risk of overheating because they can’t pant as efficiently.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency. Know the signs!

-Heavy panting
-Drooling
-Looking for shade
-Whining
-Hesitance to play
