Can you believe it? Spruce, the silliest goose at the VHS, has been with us for over a year!

Now in foster care, four-year-old Spruce needs a home that will take things slow. He’s a big guy with big feelings and needs time to warm up and build trust – Once you get there with him, he will repay you with endless love, laughs and devotion!

Spruce is a total ham and very affectionate with his foster mom. He’s housebroken, good with other dogs, unsure about cats (he has no history of living with them) and would do best in a home with older kids.

An excellent new article from Cathy Bissell, with our friends at the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

You will never see our organization using the term "kill shelter" because it is harmful, useless, unkind, and accomplishes nothing. It turns the public against the very shelters who need adopters, funding, and volunteers the most.

While we now technically qualify as a "no-kill" organization by industry standards... it hasn't always been that way and it was a hard fight to get here. We don't have "no-kill" in our name on purpose, and we would never call a fellow hardworking organization who hasn't been able to get there yet, a "kill shelter" or "high-kill shelter."

We ask you as animal lovers to please never use this language in your posts or comments... and politely ask others to stop, too. It's 2025. We're all working toward the same goals and language matters!

The Vanderburgh Humane Society will be opening at 2pm on Wednesday, January 29th due to a staff meeting. Our intakes department will be closing at 12pm.

Last year, the VHS housed almost 3,000 cats 🤯 30% of those intakes were kittens under 8 weeks old. And guess what…THEY JUST KEEP COMING!

6-year-old Sumo is currently in foster care, where he has become best friends with their 3-year-old human. His foster says he is extremely tolerant with younger kids, a bit wary of cats, house-trained, and is just an overall happy guy who they have not had a single issue with!

🐾 Meet adoptable Minty 🐾

Minty's foster says she has done so well with the cats, dogs, and all 7 kids in the home! She is crate trained and house trained. Knows a few tricks and is very smart. Looooves toys and treats and is highly motivated, a people pleaser! They keep gushing about how goofy and silly she is. She's high energy and very playful.

Minty’s foster will be bringing her to the shelter when we open on Saturday, come meet her and fall in love!
