The Vanderburgh Humane Society (VHS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1957. We receive no tax-based funding whatsoever and we are not affiliated in any way with the Humane Society of the United States. Therefore, we depend solely on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, and hopefully expand, the much-needed services we offer. Located in E
vansville, Indiana, we serve more than 11,000 pets and their families each year through a variety of programs. We are a founding member of EPAW, the Evansville Partnership for Animal Welfare, launched in 2013.

This bonded pair transferred in from another shelter that didn't have the resources to care for bunnies. Luckily, VHS team member and foster Sheridan stepped up to the plate and has since discovered the joys of bunny sitting!
“At first they were shut down and scared, but they have blossomed into the two silliest buns you ever did see. Bianca nudges my arm for attention and is extremely nosy. Bridgette enjoys giving me judgy looks and loves being the first to try new treats. Their enclosure has slowly taken over my basement and it's so fun to decorate it each week with new colors or themes!”

Today we are celebrating the retirement of our beloved Humane Education Coordinator, Cyndi Donley. She has served our organization for 21 years and helped build an incredibly successful Humane Education Department. In fact, today she had her last program ever at Children's Museum of Evansville. An estimated 60,000+ children have benefited from her and her volunteers’ time and dedication over the last two decades at many organizations including:
• EVSC (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation), Diocese, and Evansville Day School
• Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center
• Community Action Program of Evansville and Vanderburgh County, Inc (CAPE) Head Start
• YMCA of Southwestern IN Summer Camp and Diamonds
• Hoosier Academy
• Ark Crisis Children's Center
• Girl Scouts of Southwest Indiana & Buffalo Trace Council, Boy Scouts of America
• several local preschools including Aldersgate, Old North, and Parents Choice
And many, many more.
Cyndi was also our Volunteer Coordinator for years and has helped save countless animal lives. She is one of 3 remaining staff who worked in both our old Buchanan Road location, and our new facility we moved into in 2004.
Cyndi is just a wonderful, funny person who has given us all so many memories over the years that we will cherish. She can always be counted upon to have a killer Halloween costume or a funny gag gift for the holiday party. We will miss her dearly. Please join us in congratulating Cyndi D on her retirement! 🐶🐾🏝️

🚨KENNELS FULL BEYOND CAPACITY🚨
It's , but to be honest, it feels reeeeally hard to celebrate right now when every shelter in our region and around the country are absolutely drowning in dogs.
We’re at 124% capacity. How do those numbers add up?
🐾 66 kennels
🐾 82 dogs in the building (41 in foster care) including 5 dogs pulled from Evansville Animal Care & Control (Official) just today because their kennels are also completely full.
🐾 14 dogs already scheduled for surrender this week + 7 dog surrender forms pending
Dogs are staying in visiting rooms, floor crates, offices… everywhere. And there's still no end in sight. We know it's a broken record by now and we're not the only ones.
The bottom line is: we need adoptions, and we need them THIS WEEK. Here are some of the pups we have available:

Happy "812 Day!" August 12th is a day when we celebrate our region through acts of kindness, volunteerism, and overall pride for our community.
We may be closed to the public today, but how can you still help the animals? We have run COMPLETELY out of paper towels! We've bought some today to hold us over, but can you help us stock back up? As of today we have 385 animals in the building to clean up after, including messy puppies like Blockbuster (pictured.) Whew!

After approximately 470 days at the VHS, Danica has finally left the building!! We repeat, our longest dog resident has been adopted! 🎉🎉🎉 Staff saw her off with a few happy tears, lots of smiles and, of course, a tennis ball 🎾 Happy tails, Danny! This reduced fee adoption was made possible by the BISSELL Pet Foundation. There are still many hidden gems at the shelter like Danica waiting for homes. Thank you to the Petfinder Foundation for awarding the Vanderburgh Humane Society a 2024 Dog Enrichment Grant! We used these funds to purchase KONG Wobbler enrichment toys for our dogs. Lou (first gray dog) and Stanley (second brown & white dog) are already trying them out thinking, how you get da heckin treats outta these things?! Enrichment helps meet dogs’ mental and emotional needs while they wait for their forever homes, not just their physical needs.
