Pet Logic

Pet Logic Training and behavioral modification for dogs, cats, and birds. Our goal is to strengthen the human/animal bond through education and training.
(1)

Pet Logic was created by animal care professionals to promote a positive, force free, & scientifically based approach to training companion animals & the people who care for them. Our mission is to "Strengthen the human/animal bond through education and training."

Training is about communication & relationship. The goal should be to teach our animals how to live with us, as well as strengthen ou

r relationship with them. They are not born understanding our language, rules, or expectations. It is our job as their guardians to help them learn & to provide a happy, healthy, fulfilling life.

Modern animal training has come a long way since the days of punishment based practices & dominance theory. It has been shown that not only are these outdated methods based on disproven theories, but often lead to aggression, confusion, & learning impairment. The use of pain, fear, & intimidation is unprofessional, unethical, & unnecessary!

We believe training should be a fun & positive experience for everyone involved. Through the use of training methods free from pain, fear, or intimidation; we strive to not only help your companion animal through their behavioral issues, but to strengthen your relationship with them as well.

Our training is more than just tricks & obedience. It is prevention, socialization, husbandry, & understanding. We want you to truly understand & connect with the animals you share your life with.

We once crate trained a pair of foxes!

Both co-founders of Pet Logic have degrees in exotic animal training and management; and part of that process involved working with a pair of red foxes. These skittish balls of fur were brought to a zoo in California and could never be released into the wild. When it came time to move to a bigger space, there was only one thing to do; crate train the two of them.

While we would never condone keeping a fox as a pet, the experience of working with them was both amazing and invaluable.

If you need some help managing your dog at home, during car rides, or on trips; we've got the perfect advice for you. Check out our latest blog post, all about crate training.

Crates are important tools for safety and confinement. If done correctly, your dog should view their crate as a comfortable "den".

We get asked all the time how to stop your cat from scratching up your furniture. In today's post, we cover that and more!

To stop your cat from scratching inappropriately, it's important to understand: why they do, appropriate alternatives, and getting them to actually use those instead.

We've got a new blog! You can check out our first post here. And don't worry, even if your dogs not a rescue, there's lots of potty training info if you're struggling with it.

The most common question I got asked at shelters was "Are they potty trained?" Even if they aren't, it doesn't have to be a struggle.

It’s going to be a HOT weekend. Make sure to stay safe when walking your dog. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Avoid extended periods of time outside and outdoor exercise; instead opting for fun indoor play and mental stimulation.

It’s completely normal for dogs to be “dog selective”, especially as they become adults. If anything it’s the dogs that are incredibly dog social that are the rarity.

Where does YOUR dog lie on this sociability scale?

Corey talks “Pandemic Pets” with PAWS animal shelter and Microsoft.

Have you noticed an ever-increasing cacophony of barks and meows in your neighborhood since the pandemic began? Well you're certainly not alone. Since the pandemic brought the majority of America's workforce inside their homes, people who previously were apprehensive about getting a pet only to leav...

Changing your dog’s habits are like moving weights on a scale.

Every time your dog makes a decision, good or bad, you put a weight on that side of the scale. At first, they easily fall back into old habits because the scale is so weighted in that direction already. Gradually though, you add weight to the other side as you set them up to make good decisions and repeat them.

At first, it’s hard to see that habit forming and the scale doesn’t move, but as they continue to make those good choices the scale start to tip the other way. Eventually you find that the easiest decision for them to make is the newly formed habit.

In this way, it is important to manage the environment and set them up for success. The scales will never tip if they are making more bad choices than good. It’s all about that gradual progression towards your goals!

Did you know that dogs have up to 13 different blood types?

Just like with people, pets in an emergency situation often find themselves in need of a blood transfusion; and just like with doctors, veterinarians often rely on public donations to blood banks for this life saving resource.

Are you and your dog interested in being a donor? You can find out more here, and talk to your veterinarian about local options for blood donation.

Today’s fun fact - Up to 85% of greyhounds are universal blood donors!

Your community animal blood bank, the NAVBB provides blood to veterinarians across America, sourcing blood from volunteers in our community.

According to the plan, tomorrow is “Spicy Friday!” Which means everyone gets fun, healthy, and safe spices or herbs added to their food for a great scent and taste enrichment.

Do you have a pet care plan?

A pet care plan or calendar can be a great way to stay on track with your training, enrichment, and care goals.

Add things like:
Training times/goals
Enrichment activities or daily treats
Cleaning times & tasks
Anything that helps you stay on track!

They are especially useful if you have multiple pets or if your daily tasks seem to get lost in the shuffle. You can make them daily, weekly, or monthly.

Have fun with it! Get the kids involved too, color, draw pictures, get as organized as you want! Remember that it’s personal to your family, so feel free to use shorthand, nicknames, whatever you need to do to keep on track and take control of your training and care goals.

As the weather starts getting warmer it’s important to consider temperature when taking your dog in the car. Leaving them for just a few minutes can have a drastic affect on temperature. Check out this article from the American Veterinary Medical Association for details.

“The temperature inside your vehicle can rise almost 20º F in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes, it can rise almost 30º F...and the longer you wait, the higher it goes. At 60 minutes, the temperature in your vehicle can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even on a 70-degree day, that's 110 degrees inside your vehicle!” - AVMA

Your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness or death, even on days that don't seem hot to you.

Though there has been speculation for many years, veterinarians continue to find links between certain grain-free diets and heart disease in dogs. With so many diet options available for your pets, it's important that you discuss with your vet what a proper diet looks like for your pet.

About 1,100 dogs have developed dilated cardiomyopathy in the past seven years. Retrospective data show potential links with diet, and FDA officials encourage further study.
