This is lesson four of eight with Lucy, a sound, well-rounded, and well bred German Shepherd puppy, participating in the Mountain Canine College Good Start Puppy Package.

Lucy explored her new world outside of her comfort zone during this lesson. She observed a noisy dump truck drive by from a safe distance and she was marked by assurance as she exercised excellent self control. She even unexpectedly met the Fedex man as he delivered a package to her owner and she learrned how to properly greet an acceptable stranger.

The Good Start Puppy Package is designed over 4 weeks; meeting with the puppy 2x per week for 30 minute sessions. It helps shape, guide and influence behavior that is desired as a puppy and well into adulthood. The first 16 weeks of life sets the "formative" foundation to what the puppy believes its place in the world is, and what that means to them, both good & bad. It is important that the puppy learns what perception vs. reality is, building the trust relationship with the owner.

During this course, we engage and immerse the puppy in many ways. From textures, to sounds, to smells, new environments and adventures that are fun and safe. It teaches leadership and learning through positive interactions.

National and Colorado State Parks pet regulations information...

We want to take our dogs everywhere, but the fact is we must do our research ahead of time before traveling, especially to National Parks and Colorado State Parks. Mountain Canine College would like to share some information when you consider taking your dog to a National Park or Colorado State Park.

Most National Parks do allow dogs in campgrounds, on most trails, and developed areas. National Parks do have rules and regulations that are specific to each individual National Park to protect and preserve the land and habitat of wildlife and plant life found within the boundaries of the park.

Colorado State Parks prohibit dogs on preservation trails and areas in the backcountry. Colorado State Parks do allow dogs in campground, picnic, and roadside areas. Where they are allowed, dogs must be on leash at all times. The leash length requirement is no more than six feet. There are a few State Parks that do allow dogs to be off leash in designated areas.

Prohibitions do not apply to service animals (dogs or miniature horses) accompanying a person with a disability. Emotional support, therapy dogs, or other animals are not defined as service animals by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and thus are prohibited in areas where service dogs are allowed. Before departing on your trip, be sure to check the National Park or Colorado State Park regulations regarding dogs that you wish to visit. Park rules could be subject to change, and it would be advisable to check with the Park Service websites.

Overall, you should leash your dog when it's required AND:

• When meeting or passing other visitors on a trail. This is especially important if they have dogs and/or children with them.

• When meeting or passing pack strings on a trail, it is not only common courtesy, but for safety reasons to yield to an oncoming pack string. Move well off the trail (to the downhill side if possible) and start talking in a calm voice to the riders and horses BEFORE they reach you. Stay still and avoid spooking stock. If your dog insists on barking at a pack string or individual horseback rider, then remove yourself and your dog as far away from the pack string as possible and until all horses and riders have safely passed by.

• When camping near other visitors or near stock.

• At destinations where other visitors are present.

• Around wildlife.

• During storms, especially if your dog is afraid of thunder. Scared dogs tend to run and can easily become lost.

Here are a couple of helpful websites for your information...

One final note...

Don't forget to take disposable dog p**p bags! Let's take great care of our National Parks and Colorado State Parks by cleaning up after our beloved dogs.
