From working in two different doggy daycares for years I’ve learned they aren’t really as great as you’d hope. For some dogs they do fine here but for many dogs it’s way too stressful/lonely and owners have no clue what they are paying for. I left one facility hoping things were different at another but they were not, which led me to leave that one as well. Please make sure when boarding your dog somewhere you find the right fit for YOUR dog based on their personality and needs.

Here are just 10 of the things I’ve seen first hand while working at doggy daycares/boarding facilities that I was NOT a fan of.

1. Some dogs are TERRIFIED while they are here and workers get in trouble for spending to much time with one dog, or sitting in their kennel with them to comfort them.
2. Dogs are left unattended overnight which a lot of these dogs aren’t used to. Most facilities close around 7 and open around 7. That’s a long time for them to be locked up in a kennel.
3. When the dogs are let out it’s very brief unless you pay an extra ___ amount to have private play or group play during the day.
4. Because they aren’t let out often dogs end up going to the bathroom in their kennel if they don’t have access to outside, which is often extra. This ends up not being cleaned up right away and your dog is laying in it all.
5. Often times dogs don’t want to eat while they are there and workers will just throw their food out instead of entice them to eat.
6. I’ve seen horrible injuries that are ignored or dogs that are sick ignored. I’ve also seen dogs not receiving their medication that was packed for them.
7. Owners often aren’t allowed to leave their dogs with things from home to help comfort them.
8. Sometimes owners pay for extra “private time” for their dogs but if the workers are too busy the dogs will either not actually receive this private time or their time will be cut short and the owner never knows.
9. If you pay for group play but your dog has been singled out as one “being bad” they’ll get separated from the group or put back in their kennel, but you still paid for that group play.
10. The kennels get VERY loud at times even if you upgrade to suites. This can make some dogs super nervous and scared.

*Please note that these may not be true for all boarding facilities but are what I’ve personally seen working in them.
