Our Wolf Rock staff attended the RIVMA conference this week, and learned lots of great things! Nate and Amy spent an entire day learning about behavior, and were joined by our former tech, Siobhan. Dr H spent 2 days learning about topics in neurology and clinical pathology.
We will be sending our clients an email next week, keep an eye out, for a few updates and some helpful information🐕

Dr Hassinger has returned from the annual Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association’s Ecotour, which was held this year in and around Eugene Oregon. The topic was mushrooms, medicinal and nutritional. We attended the annual mushroom festival and spent a few days studying, foraging and eating them!
Special thanks to RealMushrooms for supporting this amazing continuing education. And to our clients, who also support our continuing education.
At Wolf Rock, we often prescribe mushrooms for our patients. They are especially useful in the treatment of cancers, immune deficiencies, heart disease and neurologic conditions.

Dr Hassinger has recently attended the 50th congress of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, which was held in Edinbrough Scotland. There were veterinarians from around the world in attendance and lots of great classes to increase her healing skills.
She followed that educational experience with some vacation time in Germany with her Bavarian family. We deeply appreciate your understanding that all veterinarians need time for continuing education and renewal. For those who may be interested, here are some photos

We are happy to be an independant veterinary hospital, and we treat each patient as an individual.
From the article:

“In other words, veterinarians at these corporate owned clinics cannot stray from company treatment protocol – they cannot think for themselves or provide treatment for a particular pet that should not follow corporate treatment protocol (such as the vaccination issue).

And now…thanks to more laws that are not enforced with regards to our pets…Mars will own even more veterinary clinics and quite concerning the nations largest veterinary laboratory. All pushing a reported one size fits all treatment plan that could cost unknowing pet owners thousands of dollars in additional fees.”

Mars - the privately owned largest manufacturer of pet food in the world - just purchased a second chain of veterinary hospitals staging them as the largest owner of veterinary hospitals too. Is this a monopoly and how will it effect pet owners?

Dr Hassinger had a great weekend, up in NH, learning about TLAER (Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue). Topics included trailer safety, trailer accidents, how to deal with horses during evacuations, floods, fires, sinking in mud and falling into holes.

Dr Rebecca Gimenez Husted did a very thorough and professional job teaching and demonstrating skills. The Tuftonboro NH FD hosted the event and created the “test dummy” that worked out well.
As a vet and a horse owner, it’s good to know about these things… many thanks to all!

On Wednesday, Dr Hassinger attended a hands-on, basic abdominal ultrasound class, which was organized by RIVMA. We will still continue to use the expertise of Dr Lester, for her skilled scans, but will soon start using our ultrasound machine more, for flash scans and basic evaluations.
Many thanks to the dogs who helped us learn, thanks to the Potter League

Your pet’s bedding is freshly washed, a ready nest full of softness, warmth….and formaldehyde?🙀

If you use dryer sheets or other fabric softeners, that “fresh scent” left behind is evidence of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.

Formaldehyde is one of the respiratory irritant VOCs common in fabric softeners, along with acetaldehyde and acetone. But there are many more - researchers found 25 distinct VOCs emitted from dryer vents when these products were used😱 Other common offenders include:

☠️pentane - causes skin and GI irritation

☠️ethyl acetate - on the EPA’s hazardous waste list, causing anemia, changes in white blood cells, and damage to the liver and kidneys

☠️benzyl acetate - absorbed through the skin and damages the pancreas

☠️alpha-terpineol - causes headaches and nervous system disorders

The good news is that your pet can have clean, soft bedding 🛌 without risk of coughing, itchy rashes, organ dysfunction and more! In our new book Forever Dog LIFE, we show you how to make reusable non-toxic dryer sheets that are good for you, your pets, and the environment, plus many more DIY solutions for home and body! 🙌
