Protect Your Back While Shoveling Snow

The first snow of the year may bring excitement, but shoveling it can quickly turn into a burden—especially if it leads to back pain. Shoveling incorrectly or overexerting yourself can cause strain and discomfort, but with a few simple steps, you can protect your back and prevent injury by:
Warming up first. Spend 10 minutes doing squats, arm circles, hamstring stretches, and neck stretches to loosen up your muscles and avoid soreness.
Takeing it slow. If it’s a big job, tackle it in smaller sections and take breaks. Shoveling as soon as possible, before snow hardens, also helps.
Pushing instead of lift. Whenever you can, push the snow rather than lifting it to minimize strain on your back.
Lifting properly. If lifting is necessary, bend your knees, keep your head forward, and exhale as you lift to protect your spine.
