Broken Shovel Farm

Broken Shovel Farm Broken Shovel Farm is made up of Dave, Elaine and our trusty farm dog in training Maisy. We will never use any chemicals or fertilizers on our soils or plants.

About Us
We have a strong passion for growing healthy food and a deep appreciation for farming life. Over the years we have become very successful at growing our own food that sustains us through much of the year. After an unexpected career change, we’ve decided to take our passion to another level and help provide our community with healthy food that is grown locally. About our Farm
We are careta

kers for a conserved farm in the town of West Haven, Vermont, and also lease the farm to grow vegetables and herbs to sell at nearby markets. Our farm, the Broken Shovel Farm as we’ve named it, has a very long and interesting history of people working the land. We hope to continue that tradition and honor those that have worked the land before us. Our soils are clay, which made us decide to use raised beds and build up our own soil utilizing composted cow manure from a farm located just a few miles down the road. While the land here on our farm is not currently Certified Organic, we are determined to only use organic methods in growing our products. During the 2024 season, you can find our products at the Rutland County Farmers Market in Depot Park on Saturdays from 9AM-2PM, We hope to see you at the market and look forward to sharing our yummy vegetables with you.

What a beautiful day for a market! We will be here from 9 until 1pm, leaving a bit early since we have a visitor coming to the farm! As you may know, our little Broken Shovel Farm is on leased land. A woman who grew up on the property is coming to visit and we are just thrilled!

Our July started off with a real bang. At 4AM on Monday morning I walked into a partially open door in the dark, kicking the edge of the door with my little toe. Apologies to my wife for being woken up with the sounds of that lovely experience. Harvesting 13 beds of garlic and replanting with fall crops while nursing a broken toe these next couple of days is going to be interesting. Lucky to have Elaine to help with the heavy lifting around the farm. Hope to be at Rutland County Farmers Market in two more weeks!

We are privileged to live and grow food in a very special part of Vermont. Living at the end of a 2 mile dead end road allows us to see the trash that sadly gets dumped where there is an ubundance of wildlife. Being in VT but having to go through NY to get here means it can be fairly lawless. Having miles of lake frontage on the property where we lease the farm give us the opportunity to easily access shoreline that collects trash during flood season.

When not farming we can be found cleaning the road side and the lake shore. Last year's Green Up Day trash wasn't picked up so this is a 2 year collection!

As the snow and ice retreat, it gives us the chance to do a little Spring cleaning.
