Why do dogs live less than people??

Here's the answer:
Being a vet, I was called to examine a 13-year-old Irish dog named Belker.
The dog's family, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little 6-year-old Shane were close to Belker and expected a miracle.
I tested the dog and found out he was dying of cancer. I told the family I couldn't do anything for him and offered to do the euthanasia procedure at home.
The next day, I felt the familiar feeling in my throat when Belker was surrounded by family.
Shane seemed so quiet, petting the dog for the last time and I was wondering if he would understand what was going on. In a few minutes, the animal fell peacefully sleeping to never wake up.
The child seemed to accept Belker's transition without difficulty. We sat for a moment wondering why the unfortunate fact that dog life is shorter than human beings.
Shane, who had been listening closely, said, "I know why."
What he said next surprised me: I had never heard a more heartwarming explanation than this. This moment changed my way of seeing life.
He said: "People come into the world to learn to live a good life, like loving others all the time and being a good person, eh? well, as dogs are already born knowing how to do all this, they don't have to stay as long as we do."
The moral of the story is:
If a dog was his teacher, you'd learn things like:
🐾 When your loved ones come home, always run to say hello.
🐾 Never pass up an opportunity to go for a walk.
🐾 Allow yourself the experience of fresh air and wind.
🐾 Runs, jumps, and plays daily.
🐾 Upgrade your attention and let people touch you.
🐾 Avoid " biting" when just a "growl" would suffice.
🐾 On warm days, lay on the grass.
🐾 When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
🐾 And never forget: "When someone has a bad day, stay silent, sit close and gently make them feel like you're there..."
This is the secret of happiness that, even if we don't realize, dogs teach us daily. 🐶❤️

Tinkerbell - my ever thoughtful and loving swing dog. She is always so patient while waiting to go for a run. On the dog trail she is all business. Thanks to Debby George of San Francisco, California for this great photo!!

Alaska Yukon Quest Is Now On Plan “C”

Well everyone, we have what will be the last change to our races this year. Without going into all of the details regarding this necessity, here is what we are going to do:
Both races will start in Fairbanks on the 5th of February at 1100 at the Big I downtown. The race course for both races will go from Fairbanks to Two Rivers to Mile 101 to Central. From Central the YQ200 will do a 70 mile loop up the Quest trail and return for a Central finish. The YQ350 (formally the YQ500), will complete the same loop and then continue back to Fairbanks on the Quest trail for a finish at the Big I.

We are extremely grateful to our volunteers, host communities, staff, fans, and especially our mushers for sticking with the race this year and continuing to make it happen despite all of the challenges and adversity we have faced.

We will see you on the trail.

A note from our president:

Hello Mushing Community,

I would like to start this out by squashing any rumors that we are disbanding. That is simply not true. The club has been struggling with participation for the last few years - mostly with people tentatively committing, but not being able to follow through. With that, the board has been stretched thin and with the unprecedented weather this season, we have had to make the hard decision to postpone races. We do not make those decisions lightly. I have had discussions with many mushers, past board members, and my current board members. We have not completely shut down the possibility of holding a race this season, but we will need people to seriously step up and commit to some trail time. I am certainly willing to be out there too, but I and my board cannot do this alone. We have been working pretty hard behind the scenes and so far, I have not been able to get enough folks to hold a commitment so that the onus is not on just a few people.

It is time for our entire mushing community to step up. We have had the same people putting in too much time. In the end, none of us are paid and as a non-profit, none of us will be. We need to work together as a community to keep this going strong. I have heard a lot of negative comments through the grapevine, but very few have been brought to the club directly. Please know we are always available to receive feedback, good or bad. Please be open with us.

There is a poll for helping us put on a race this season on our website:
https://www.trdma.info/2021-2022-race-season/
Please participate. I would love this club and community to be as strong as I know it can be!

Barbra Carey
TRDMA President
