Pet Diabetes Awareness 🐾🩺

Did you know? November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month! Here are some important facts to keep your furry friends healthy:

🔹 Diabetes in pets is more common than you think, affecting 1 in every 300 dogs and 1 in every 230 cats.
🔹 Symptoms to watch for: increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss despite a good appetite, and lethargy.
🔹 Early detection is key! With proper management, including insulin therapy, a healthy diet, and regular vet visits, diabetic pets can lead happy lives.
🔹 Pets are more likely to develop diabetes if they’re overweight, older, or have a genetic predisposition.

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a check-up with your vet right away!

Tuesday, Oct 22nd weather plan - we are currently open but will plan to close at 3pm. If you have a scheduled appointment and wish to reschedule, please give us a call or text the office number. Only a portion of our staff was able to make it in this morning, so be patient as we try to get through the calls and get patients seen. We hope to be back to normal tomorrow.

We fought through the snow this morning and now battling the rain. Our team will be going home early today to make sure everyone is safe at home before the rain freezes. At this time, we are unsure of Tuesday’s plan. I imagine we will be short staff members who live outside of town and will not be able to safely get to work. We will update in the morning our plan for seeing patients. If you would like to reschedule, you can reach out by leaving a message or text our office line.

We ended Tech Week 2024 on a high last night with our annual bonfire in the clinic parking lot, and these wonderful crazies braved the 20* weather to celebrate our awesome team. I know I've said it so many times before, but I mean it every time when I say, this clinic is blessed with an outstanding staff. From front desk customer service representatives to assistants to technicians to doctors to other support staff, we all work together as a team to give our best for the pets of Fairbanks. Technician Appreciation Week may have ended, but we continue to appreciate all of our staff every day!

While we are celebrating National Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week, we thought it might be a good time to introduce our newest back staff employee, Leo!

Leo was adopted by Dr. DeLeon back in September of this year from the Fairbanks shelter, and he has quickly acclimated to living life as our new clinic cat. Mostly, he loves to sleep in the break room. Or sleep in the reception office. Or sleep in the kennel laundry room. What can we say. What Leo lacks in employee work ethic, he more than makes up for in raising clinic morale.

So, if you happen to get a glimpse of our new furry orange cat walking around the clinic, you can say hi to him as he probably is on his way toward another nap.

And also, happy continued Vet Tech Week to our amazing back staff of techs and assistants who we truly believe help make us the best animal hospital in Fairbanks! We are extraordinarily proud of their hard work and dedication to being the best in the field. Be sure to show the techs and assistants some extra love this week if you come in!

Founded in 1971, Mt. McKinley Animal Hospital is committed to providing the very best veterinary care possible. Our eight veterinarians combine their expertise with state-of-the-art technology in our modern hospital to deliver veterinary medical care to the wonderful pets in Fairbanks. All of the staff at Mt. McKinley Animal Hospital understands the special bond between pets and their families, and strive to fulfill the needs of each client and each patient. Working together with our clients, we keep healthy pets healthy and help sick pets get better!

Mt. McKinley Animal Hospital was accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in 1976. AAHA accreditation means that our hospital has voluntarily undergone close scrutiny to prove that we operate by the highest standards and provide the highest level of care possible. We have proven excellence in five areas as outlined by AAHA: quality of care, diagnostics and pharmacy, management, medical records and facility. We enjoy the challenge of reaching the benchmarks posed by AAHA, which ensures that we are up-to-date on changes in veterinary medicine.
