Chasing Goals: Jason Mackey's Journey in the The Iditarod

Jason Mackey discusses his experience in the Iditarod race, including his goal of a top-20 finish and his eventual 16th-place finish. He talks about the challenges he faced during the race and the changes he made in his training schedule. Mackey also discusses the importance of passion and determination in dog sledding and the support he receives from his family.

He shares the story of his 11-year-old dog, Rad, who led him to the finish line in the Iditarod. Mackey also talks about the differences between training in Fairbanks and the Matsu area and his plans for next year’s race.

The Burled Arch signifies the end of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The gold rush atmosphere still abounds, especially when “Iditarod Fever” hits town with the entire community turning out to welcome the mushers and visitors alike to their community

SAFETY CHECKPOINT - Anchorage 953 miles, Nome 22 miles.
The last checkpoint before Nome, just 22 miles away. Here the mushers are on the coast of the Bering Sea and travel on the beach most of the way to Nome.

WHITE MOUNTAIN CHECKPOINT - Anchorage 898 miles, Nome 77 miles.
Just 77 miles from Nome, this village is located on the banks of the Fish River. It takes its name from that of a picturesque nearby mountain. The checkpoint is located in the community hall building up the hill from the store.

Jason arrived in White Mountain at 05:31 AK 13:31 UK after travelling for 7hr 59m at 5.76mph. Jason will need to rest here for 8hr for his final mandatory stop. He will then head towards Safety 55 miles away and then the final leg of this incredible journey will be 22 miles to the Burled Arch in Nome.

Jason left Elim at 21:32 AK 05:32 UK after resting there for 2h 56m. Next checkpoint is at White Mountain 46 miles away where he will have to take a mandatory 8 hour rest before heading through Safety on his way to the finish line in Nome.

ELIM CHECKPOINT - Anchorage 852 miles, Nome 123 miles.
The checkpoint is usually at the fire hall. From here the trail heads over the hills of the Kwiktalik Mountains inland a little way to the next checkpoint at White Mountain

Jason left Koyuk at 12:04 AK 20:04 UK after resting there for 7h 18m. Next checkpoint is Elim 48 miles away. Then theres just White Mountain and Safety inbetween Jason and Front Street.

KOYUK CHECKPOINT - Anchorage 804 miles, Nome 171 miles
Once this checkpoint is reached, the mushers can breath a sigh of relief as almost all of the rest of the trail is at least over land. The checkpoint is the City Recreation Center

SHAKTOOLIK CHECKPOINT - Anchorage 754 miles, Nome 221 miles.
From here the trail continues overland for a short distance, then leads the mushers out onto the ice of Norton Bay, one of the most treacherous segments of trail that the musher may have to contend with. The checkpoint is at the armory.
