Straw For Dogs
Heart Fur Animals - Delta Junction, AK
Today marks six year since Lou and her crew were rescued. Now 15+ years old, she still loves walks in the woods (and on the beach), comfy dog beds, and extra snacks every day. We will spare you the awful "before" photos, but if you care about animals, we need to get real about rescues that aren't providing quality care; the people who had neglected Lou and so many others for so long identified as a sled dog "rescue." Legitimate animal rescues provide veterinary care and provide comfortable and clean conditions. They know how many animals they have in their care, will answer questions, allow visits, and do not value quantity over quality of life. https://www.aspca.org/animal-cruelty/animal-hoarding/closer-look-animal-hoarding
Straw For Dogs volunteer application is now available as an easy, online form thanks to Dream True Media! Don't you want to help us change the world, for one dog at a time? http://www.strawfordogs.org/volunteer/
Happy New Year from Lou! Straw For Dogs alumni and late-blooming expert at enjoying life. #seniordog #adopt
Former feral Gypsy using a food toy for part of her breakfast. This is a type of toy she didn't like at first, but as her food toy game has grown, she now has the skills to enjoy the challenge. Do you use food toys? If not, why? #ditchthedogbowl #enrichment
Use food dispensing toys to give dogs something fun to do daily...Because life in rescue should be awesome! #enrichment #rescuedog #strawfordogsAK
A few favorite faces to start a busy weekend! Straw For Dogs is so thankful for the volunteers, supporters, and clients who make a difference, for one dog at a time.
Gypsy was a feral dog until rescued in the fall of 2015, and she is learning so much in her refuge home! Her "forever foster" enjoys working with her through positive training and games like nosework. Gypsy is smart, engaging, and enjoying her life with Straw For Dogs volunteers. #rescuedog #strawfordogsak
Rocky was recently rescued by Straw For Dogs through our partnership with Anchorage Animal Care and Control. He already has found his place on his foster homes' team! Want to help us help pets outdoors? Fun and loving fosters and adopters are always needed-please email [email protected]
Just over two weeks in rescueโฆafter 3-4 years a stray. We are working at Gypsy's pace, slow, steady and successful is the name of the game! This miraculous girl has been having fun with squeaky toys and catching the treats from her foster family <3 Want to find out more about working with shy dogs? See www.fearfuldogs.com
Check out Gypsy, with a food puzzle! One week in rescue after being a stray for years and this girl is doing great. Life in rescue should be awesome! Enrichment should be a part of every day life for an animal in the care of a rescue or shelter- its not optional. Day 1 working with extremely shy dog Gypsy. She has been mostly resting up since her rescue on Friday, Oct 30th, sleeping and eating well. A neighborhood stray for 3 to 4 years- likely most of her life- this smart little survivor picked a certain house to call her own and thankfully the Good Samaritans there fed her, founds homes for her puppies and eventually called Straw For Dogs. Being in "flight" mode outdoors, she would never get close to humans or be convinced to live indoors. It is an honor and privilege to work with her in our refuge and rehoming program and we look forward to sharing her progress. ~ Metis, S4D co-founder, volunteer, certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA)
Here is Gypsy on one of our many visits before we were able to bring her into our refuge and rehoming program. A dog outdoors is in "flight" mode-she has survived years by being wary and cautious- and likely also sleep deprived. Her foster home reports she is getting lots of rest, sprawling out on the Costco Bolster bed instead of hiding in the provided crate (with door taken off). THAT IS A GOOD SIGN! Straw For Dogs follows science and evidence based training methods for all dogs in our care-check out Fearfuldogs.com for the best information about helping shy dogs.
Lou spent many years outdoors before coming into our rescue program. She didn't make a peep for over a year because she was so shy-now she has found her voice and demands walks, breakfast and treats on a regular schedule. We are happy to oblige and make this senior dogs life awesome! #seniordogsrock #foster #adopt
Our boy Frankie enjoying the play yards at Mojo's Hope ...Wishing you all a weekend full of such joy!
Common myths we love to bust open: Pitbulls are dangerous. People with animals outdoors don't care about them. And huskies can never be let off leash...Here is Pip-after months of positive training and lots of TLC provided by his adopters, proving that misconception wrong with every joyful step. Together, we can make a difference, one dog at a time.
Today, we celebrate LOVE with this announcement: Pip has been adopted by his foster home! This young guy was rescued by Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center this fall, found in Girdwood with a dozen other emaciated huskies. At first terrified and shut down, Pip has thrived with lots of TLC. Want to help us change the world, for one dog at a time? We always are in need of fosters and adopters. www.strawfordogs.org
Check out Ernie-bear on his new ramp!! His wonderful family built this to help him get up and down a bit easier! 14 years young and going strong! We love seeing our outreach clients flourishing in their amazing adoptive homes. Thank you Nancy Podgorski and Ed Podgorski for sharing this with us.
