Friday we were invaded by Chenoa Street Cats! These adorable kittens were left and hidden around the clinic (inside and outside). The gentleman who dropped them off started this in Chenoa to bring some smiles and hopefully awareness of the need to spay and neuter. He rescued a stray cat on Halloween who he will have fixed soon to prevent more Chenoa Street Cats from needing homes.

Thanks for following along with us during Vet Tech Week. To everyone who commented, thanks. You really know how to make us feel loved and appreciated!
Now we want to share a cute personalized gift idea for our pet lovers. These are continuous line drawings made by a vet tech (not one of ours, but we are happy to support other techs). We submitted photos of our pets and she drew them. If you need an inexpensive, unique Christmas gift, send her a message. These take time and she is a busy girl, so be patient and get your Christmas order to her now. You won't be disappointed! (Drawing comes to you digitally, so you can print multiples. They would even be cute coloring pages for kids. One of these below may even become a tattoo for one of our techs!)

Not to be left out of Vet Tech Week is our “new girl”, Jordan Hamilton. Jordan has just joined us. As of today, she has worked at Fairbury Veterinary Hospital for 8 days! (Starting here prior to vet tech week was a great way to be introduced to everyone!)

Jordan has always had a love for animals. When she was a child, she used to “rescue” her neighbors outdoor cats. She believed then, and continues to believe now, that every animal should be cared for. Jordan is excited to learn how to provide the best care for your pets. Every day will be a new opportunity for Jordan to learn the ins and outs of veterinary medicine. So far, she has been introduced to proper holding techniques, how to run blood tests, and has answered and scheduled many appointments. We think she is doing great and look forward to teaching her so much more in the coming months!

Since everyone had to answer the question of what animal they would like to be, Jordan chose a sea turtle so she could spend her days swimming and exploring!

Feel free to share a photo of your pet to introduce Jordan to the animals she will be seeing. (Who knows, your picture may appear later on our page!)

Today, as Vet Tech Week comes to an end, we will introduce you to two staff members. The staff member that has been here for the longest and the newest staff member get to share the spotlight today!

Michelle Elder has been here for 29 years! Michelle lives with her husband, Andrew (also known as Mr Elder to the fourth graders at PC), sons, Ashtin, Avery, and Aidan and her menagerie of animals. Two dachshunds, Maggie and Milo and three cats, Riley, Chief, and Rio.

When asked why she chose a career in the veterinary field, Michelle quickly replied that she didn't choose it – it chose her! Having just graduated from high school in 1995, she came to the clinic with a sick kitten and left with a job offer! (Her cousin worked here at that time and she knew Michelle loved animals and was trying to decide where life would lead her. The clinic was hiring a receptionist, so she put in a good word for her and Michelle accepted the job.) Her plan was to work here until she decided what she wanted to do with her life. She will still happily tell you that she is just working here until she figures it out! Hopefully it is another 29 years before she decides what to be when she grows up!

As for what Michelle wishes people knew about cats and dogs, she is choosing a tough subject. Having been here for so long and having watched many pets grow from babies to seniors, she wants people to understand euthanasia. (Feel free to skip to the next paragraph if this is not something you wish to continue reading.) What Michelle wishes people knew is that euthanasia is the last gift you can give your pet. If your animal is at a point in life where there are more bad days than good and there is nothing more that can be done, euthanasia is a loving way to allow your pet to pass away peacefully. It is a hard decision to make, but it is not something to apologize for. Many times during a euthanasia, the pet parents keep apologizing to their pet for choosing this. Your pet has spent years being loved and spoiled by you, this is the last thing that you can do for them. It is the hardest choice to make, but it is truly a gift you are giving them. Animals give us everything they possibly have to give. Allowing them to peacefully pass away in the arms of those that love them, is nothing to apologize for. Your pet loves you and knows you will take care of them from puppy days to the end.

Now for a happier topic. As for what animal Michelle would choose to be, Michelle wants to be an elephant! They are highly intellect, social, sensitive, and caring family oriented animals. The ability to roam freely surrounded by family and friends is also desirable.

Check back at noon for an introduction to the newest member of our staff.

Today's spotlight is on Yesica.

While Yesica is not a technician, she is crucial to the everyday happenings of the clinic. She handles all the behind the scenes activities that occur here. Rooms are clean and well stocked, kennels are cleaned, flowers are watered, so many little things that no one thinks about are done because Yesica sees the need and fulfills it. Yesica can also quickly lighten the day with her infectious laugh!

Yesica and her husband, Marco have three children Jahir, Dulce, and Kailani. They also have a cat, Maluma and multiple chickens. Maluma was a kitten that was really sick and spent a few weeks at the clinic. While he was here recovering, Yesica fell in love with the tiny baby and he became her first house pet ever!

Yesica’s advice for people is to laugh often and to love your family. Never forget the importantance of your family.

If she were to get to choose what animal she would like to be, Yesica wants to be a beautiful butterfly. She wants to be able to fly anywhere to visit her family near and far. With family scattered throughout the USA and Mexico, she wants to be able to quickly move from place to place to see those she loves. Take her advice above, and love your family while you have the chance!

Our newest technician is Kylee Walker. She has been with us for five months. Kylee just graduated from tech school and passed her State boards test to become a CVT! (This test is notoriously difficult, so we feel this is a huge achievement!)
Kylee lives with Jake, her significant other, and her 2 year old son, Waylon. If having a toddler doesn't make life busy enough, she also has three dogs, Winston, Koa, and Aries and six cats, Jazz, Indie, Blue, Symphony, Lyric, and a kitten awaiting a name. At any moment in time, Kylee also has foster kittens. In the last few years, she has successfully bottle fed at least 10 kittens and tube fed two kittens and then placed them in forever homes. At this time, she has three kittens she is caring for that has a physical deformity like Sam's cat Reptar.

Kylee has had a love of animals ever since she was a little girl. She always said she would rescue animals and work in the vet field. Saturday mornings as a child, Kylee would get up early to watch Lucky Dog and any vet shows she could find. Since that time, she has fostered at least 50 cats, multiple dogs, and the occasional wildlife! So many animals have Kylee to thank for their ‘haplily ever after’ stories.

Kylee’s advice to pet owners is that choosing the appropriate food really matters to your pets health. Please listen to and follow the recommendations made by your veterinarian. While you know your pet the best, the vet is here to help you take the best care of them possible. Kylee also advocates for yearly blood work with pets to catch medical problems early so they can be properly managed before it is too late to fix.

When asked what animal she would like to be if she could be anything, she wants to be a dog. Particularly a German Shepherd. She wants to be allowed to go places with her people.

If you haven't met Kylee at the clinic yet, use the comments below to send her a picture of your pet. Even a virtual Hello is fun!

Today's Tech spotlight is Samantha Bachara. Sam joined our clinic 2 and a half years ago when she was just out of Tech School.

Sam and her boyfriend, Kevin have a full house of pets. Her pets include, cats Reptar, Squid, and Kolar. Dogs Kimber, Benelli, and Sig and a tortoise named Darwin. Sam has a “collection” of differently abled pets. Reptar is a cat that has deformed front legs. He was posted on our page last year when we were looking for ideas to help fix his legs. We had a group of women who worked in human medicine come and try to help splint his legs using human grade materials. The splints were not tolerated by Reptar, so we left his legs alone. Even though he can't walk normally, he has an active full life. Squid has a neurological condition that makes his head tilt and he walks in circles and rarely holds still. He too, while not clinically “normal” doesn't know he is different and enjoys each day. Sig is a paralyzed dog that Sam has been working with for the last year. When she took him in, he could not move either rear leg. With physical therapy, hydro therapy, and lots of patience, he has shown improvement and can take steps on his own. Sig has a wheelchair to give him more mobility, and he has his very own canine sport sack to ride in! This is a special backpack that Sam can wear to allow Sig to go on any outdoor adventure she takes her dogs on. Sig has been on many adventures and is adored by all who meet him while he is riding in his backpack! He is proof that a disability should not slow you down. All three of her differently abled pets have came to her thorough working here.

Sam grew up watching Steve Irwin with her grandma and she knew she wanted to do something similar. She has an intense love for animals and she wants to help those who don't have a voice.

When asked what animal she would choose to be, like Megan, Sam wants to be one of her pets. They live a good life, napping all day, eating high quality food and treats, they have no bills, go hiking, get a bark box, etc. why wouldn't she want to live the life of her pet?

The advice she would give pet owners is that pets are expensive and they need you to be their voice when something is wrong. Pets are family, treat them quickly when you suspect they have problems. Often, when addressed quickly, your bills will be less and your pet will improve quickly. Waiting creates problems that can be avoided.

Today we introduce you to Lydia Ward. Lydia has been working here for the last four years and is a vital part of our team!

Lydia and her boyfriend, Zane, have three dogs, Gunner, Hallie, and Khaleesi and four cats, Taz, Dusty, Sparrow, and October.

When asked why she chose a career in the vet field, Lydia said she was harassed into it! While this is true to some degree as both Michelle and Dr Getty asked her multiple times during 2020 to leave the humane society and join us, this is where Lydia belongs! There is nothing this girl can't do! Her most impressive tech moment here was when she was placing an IV catheter on a very angry cat. The catheter was in, but still needed to be taped and the cat lost it's cool. Kitty was leaping and jumping as Michelle held on for dear life. While Michelle was ready to call it quits before the cat hurt someone, Lydia remained calm, and between bursts of movement from the fractious feline, she safely finished taping the catheter and the cat was able to be treated without any more pokes! We are happy to have harassed her to use her compassion and talents to help our many patients!
From her Livingston County Humane Society days (Aug 2018 to April 2021), Lydia has pictures of every animal that entered the Humane Society AND she remembers their individual stories AND the names they were given at the Humane Society. Anytime an animal comes in that was adopted during that time frame, Lydia remembers it! Her phone has 948 pictures of each animal that she met during her time there! If you have an adopted pet from Livingston County, comment a picture below so Lydia can use her super power to remember who they were before getting to their forever home!

Lydia's advice for pet owners is that insurance is a necessity. There are many insurance companies, compare coverage and cost and choose one that works for you. Lydia has personal experience with this as her dog, Khaleesi, began having seizures before she was a year old. Khaleesi was taken to VCA in Aurora to see a neurologist as the seizures were not controlled by normal medications. Her price quote for diagnosing the cause of the seizures was $7,300-$8,900! Thankfully, Khaleesi is covered by Trupanion pet insurance, so her out of pocket cost was only 10% of the total! Now her dog is on daily lifelong meds to control the seizures and thanks to having insurance before she needed it, Lydia will only pay 10% of her prescription cost and insurance will cover the additional 90%! Without insurance, Khaleesi would not have received the specialty care she needed. Please check into a policy for your pet while it is healthy so you have coverage when you need it. (pawlicy.com is a website that will help you compare many companies quickly – Trupanion is Lydia's choice, but find the policy that works for you.)

If Lydia were to choose what animal to be, she wants to be one of her dogs. She sees the life they lead and wants to have that for herself!

Welcome to Veterinary Technician Week 2024! This week we will introduce you to our amazing staff.

Megan is a CVT (certified veterinary technician) who started working here 18 years ago. She and her husband, Jeff, and their three children, Chase, Bryce, and Reese live on a dairy farm.

Her family also includes many pets. Dixie, Birdie, and Lucy are her dogs. Floyd and Roy are her house cats. Goldfish Buddy and ferret Holly round out the house pets. Living on the farm has also led to living with lots of semi feral farm cats. Many have been caught and neutered, but these free loaders come for a free meal and then head off to enjoy the country life.

When asked why she chose a career in the vet field, we were surprised to learn that as a child Megan went to work with her Mom who worked at a vet clinic. She would clean up and occasionally watch surgeries. Megan has loved pets all her life.

Just for fun, when asked what animal she would want to be if she could be any animal, she said she wants to be one of her cats! She would get to sleep all day, eat whenever she wants, and enjoy lounging in the sunbeams on a sunny patio. Not a bad life at all!

Her words of wisdom to pet owners are that training is vitally important. Put the time in with your young dogs to ensure many good years with a well behaved pet.

A little known fact about Megan is that she has been known to have dairy calves live in her house! Her love of all creatures large and small shines through in her daily life.

We thank Megan for all her hard work in the last 18 years and hope she stays at least another 18 years!

Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.

If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.

Not all heroes wear capes. Today a dog got away from his owner in our parking lot as she was putting him back in her vehicle. He took off and was gone in the blink of an eye. Luckily, our FedEx Express driver saw it and took off on foot after the dog--the runaway made it to the creek near the golf course before getting caught! If your delivery is late today, thank the FedEx driver for taking time on a hot day to chase down a runaway dog! Not only does FedEx deliver packages, but today they even deliver run away dogs back to the safety of the vet clinic! (In a weird twist of fate, the driver owns a dog that is related to this one!)
