Today, as Vet Tech Week comes to an end, we will introduce you to two staff members. The staff member that has been here for the longest and the newest staff member get to share the spotlight today!
Michelle Elder has been here for 29 years! Michelle lives with her husband, Andrew (also known as Mr Elder to the fourth graders at PC), sons, Ashtin, Avery, and Aidan and her menagerie of animals. Two dachshunds, Maggie and Milo and three cats, Riley, Chief, and Rio.
When asked why she chose a career in the veterinary field, Michelle quickly replied that she didn't choose it – it chose her! Having just graduated from high school in 1995, she came to the clinic with a sick kitten and left with a job offer! (Her cousin worked here at that time and she knew Michelle loved animals and was trying to decide where life would lead her. The clinic was hiring a receptionist, so she put in a good word for her and Michelle accepted the job.) Her plan was to work here until she decided what she wanted to do with her life. She will still happily tell you that she is just working here until she figures it out! Hopefully it is another 29 years before she decides what to be when she grows up!
As for what Michelle wishes people knew about cats and dogs, she is choosing a tough subject. Having been here for so long and having watched many pets grow from babies to seniors, she wants people to understand euthanasia. (Feel free to skip to the next paragraph if this is not something you wish to continue reading.) What Michelle wishes people knew is that euthanasia is the last gift you can give your pet. If your animal is at a point in life where there are more bad days than good and there is nothing more that can be done, euthanasia is a loving way to allow your pet to pass away peacefully. It is a hard decision to make, but it is not something to apologize for. Many times during a euthanasia, the pet parents keep apologizing to their pet for choosing this. Your pet has spent years being loved and spoiled by you, this is the last thing that you can do for them. It is the hardest choice to make, but it is truly a gift you are giving them. Animals give us everything they possibly have to give. Allowing them to peacefully pass away in the arms of those that love them, is nothing to apologize for. Your pet loves you and knows you will take care of them from puppy days to the end.
Now for a happier topic. As for what animal Michelle would choose to be, Michelle wants to be an elephant! They are highly intellect, social, sensitive, and caring family oriented animals. The ability to roam freely surrounded by family and friends is also desirable.
Check back at noon for an introduction to the newest member of our staff.
