How incredibly amazing is this? Mirror image mama and daughter! Buttercup and her pup, Caramel are both available for adoption!

Buttercup is friendly with people of all ages, housebroken, coexists well with other dogs, and loves to hoard toys! While she is crate trained, she dislikes confinement but is not destructive free-roaming. Caramel is a confident pup who loves children, gets on well with adult dogs, and adores playing tug and bouncing in a ball pit!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT DOGS NEEDING FOSTERS. PLEASE READ

Happy Monday everyone.

Wanted to share a very important message and need we have that will be landing in your inbox every MONDAY going forward.

As most of you know we have our Adoption Center in Fairfax Station and the Trails Home Farm in Delaplane. At both locations we have a number of dogs - and a good number of them have been at both locations too long in our opinion.

As we know that dogs do the best when they are in home environments, it has always been our goal to use the Center & Farm as a "first stop temporary" location for our rescued dogs. A safe place for them to chill, be present at adoption events...and then move on to adoptive or foster homes.

And so we are going to "reprioritize" the dogs who have been in these locations for longer than 2 weeks for foster homes. It's most fair to them that they get all the best resources our wonderful fosters have - and not be passed over by dogs coming directly from shelters.

We have created our weekly HT Priority Pack, which consists of our top 6 dogs who really really need foster homes right away. PLEASE consider one of them and please SHARE widely in all ways that you can via email/social media/friends/family/colleagues. Every dog from the Center & Farm opens up a slot for us to rescue another.

We could not do what we do without all of you wonderful people so please help us provide the very best we can to these dogs. While we know they are in great hands at both the Center & Farm, nothing replaces a home and a family - and some of these cuties have been waiting way too long and it makes us (and them) sad.

The HT Priority Pack

Please consider these PRIORITY dogs for foster. They are the most pressing dogs in need of a foster home as they have been at our Adoption Center or the Trails Home Farm the longest. While we strive to provide top-notch care to our dogs at these locations, nothing is better for a dog than a home environment.

Our ability to move these dogs to foster homes directly impacts our ability to rescue others – it’s all entirely related. We must first take care of those dogs already with us before rescuing more. So a dog moving to foster opens up a spot (or two) for a dog facing euthanasia at an overcrowded shelter.

Thus, you fostering saves two lives – the dog you foster and the one who will take his/her place.

PLEASE consider one of these dogs today.

Every Monday we will share with you our top 6 dogs needing foster homes.

Sadly, time is ticking for every dog in a shelter right now. Together, we can save lives.

1. ROSIE
37 lbs/6 months old/Female
Good with Kids? Rosie is friendly with children of all ages
Good with Dogs? Rosie does great with other dogs and loves to play.
Good with Cats? Rosie does fine with cats
Rosie is a very sweet, loving, and cuddly dog. Nothing makes her happier than getting petted, having her bellied rubbed, or snuggling with a person. She loves adults and kids and would enjoy being in a home with a family or adults. She's learning commands quickly (sit, down, focus, leave it, off) and wants to please. She's also crate trained and we are working on house breaking.

2. SANIBEL
39 lbs/1 year old/female
Good with kids? Once Sanibel overcomes her fear of strangers, she will likely do well with older kids.
Good with dogs? Sanibel gets along great with dogs.
Good with cats? Sanibel is cat friendly.
Sanibel would benefit greatly with an experienced foster who can work with her shyness and fearfulness of new people. Sanibel requires a home with a confident dog that can show her the ropes. She is a total sweetheart who loves to get all the attention.

3. HENRI
45 lbs/5 years, 8 months old/Female
Good with Kids? The previous owner said Henri is good with kids. She is a bit shy with new people and doesn't like fast movements or loud noises. She may do better with older kids
Good with Dogs? Good with other dogs doing a hang out. She does not seem all that interested in playing with her doggy buds.
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how they are with cats. If that is needed, let us know and we'll work on getting that information!
Henri (short for Henrietta) came to HT from a rural shelter. She was surrendered because her previous owner lost their job and could no longer care for her. We're told she's a sweet girl that is good with other dogs, kids and is housebroken. She has been very sweet at the Adoption Center and wants to have a place where she can relax rather than have a very active lifestyle.

4. LEO
60 lbs/2 years old/Male
Good with Kids? Leo does great with children of all ages.
Good with Dogs? Leo can play with other dogs but does not seem to like sharing a home space with them.
Good with Cats? Leo used to chase the cat in his home on occasion so we do not think he would do well living with one.
Leo loves his people, and to play with his humans. He has medium to high energy, and would love an exercise partner and happy to be a couch potato after a big day.

5. PATCHES
50 lbs/1 year old/Male
Good with Kids? We have not seen Patches interact with any children yet
Good with Dogs? Patches loves to play chase with other dogs so he may be a bit much for seniors or smaller dogs.
Good with Cats? Patches is not recommended for homes with cats.
Patches came to us from one of our rural shelter partners where he was found as a stray. Patches is an active boy who loves to run with other dogs.

6. PENNY
25 lbs/10 months old/Female
Good with Kids? We have yet to see Penny with children.
Good with Dogs? Penny currently really only likes hanging out with other dogs and is not what we would consider especially playful with other dogs.
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how they are with cats. If that is needed, let us know and we'll work on getting that information!
Penny came from one of our rural shelter partners where she was found as a stray. She has been very sweet with the staff at the Homeward Trails Adoption Center. She should do well in so many different homes, we would love to see her find one soon!

UPDATE on LITTLE DUDE.
This poor kitty will have to stay at the vet for a week to get healed up. The wound is massive and will require a lot of care. We are his only chance. We just got word from the vet that in addition to his massive neck wound he has bites all over his legs.

PLEASE SHARE and DONATE.

HE'S BEEN SUFFERING FOR ALMOST A WEEK LIKE THIS and our hearts are breaking. Please donate here or below asap: https://www.mightycause.com/story/Helplittledude

We are jumping in now to secure vetting for this poor kitty in hopes the infection has not spread. But we are desperate for funding as it will require sedation, surgery, vaccines, medications and hospitalization to save him before he could be sent home.

We are his ONLY CHANCE.

Please donate here or below asap: https://www.mightycause.com/story/Helplittledude

URGENT MEDICAL EMERGENCY

We got the call that an owner in rural VA has a cat named Little Dude who had a massive and life- threatening wound for which the owners had no money to treat. Not even funds for euthanasia. Could we help?

Rico would love to park it on your couch, if needed, he will settle for his very own bed!
He is a very nice boy who is a pretty easy house guest. He settles down well and is calm in the house. He is not a huge fan of other dogs he meets on walks but give him a treat and he is polite as can be. Rico would love to be the sole receiver of dog affection in the house. He is, however, very good with most cats. He even brought his toys to his foster cat sibling to ask her to play with him.
Rico is a suburbanite. He loves a yard, enjoys quiet walks and enjoys letting you know your Amazon delivery has arrived. Yes, he is ADORABLE! We don't know why this sweet boy hasn't found his very own home!!!
He is 3 years old, cute as can be and would LOVE HIS VERY OWN HOME!! Consider adopting Rico. You won't go without love, licks or a couch partner. To learn more about Rico and fill out an application go to:

THANK YOU BEAGLE SAVERS!!

We cannot thank you enough AGAIN for your outpouring of support that allowed us to jump in to save more than 15 Beagles last week when they were confiscated and taken to an already full shelter. Only with your help were we able to get them into temporary boarding and moved to us by the weekend. This not only saved their lives but it prevented the euthanasia of 15 other dogs whose lives were at stake simply because there was no more space in the shelter.

Here are a few photos of them hanging out at our Adoption Center until they are neutered. A few (not photographed here) even got to go out today on a Tails OUT Adventure with volunteers.

All will either head to foster or kick it at the Center over the weekend to hopefully meet adopters. So spread the word!! We need them in homes asap so we can save more.

The winner of the raffle for the VA Beach Condo was Molly M. We cannot thank you enough for your support and for the donation of the condo from Kate and Nick W!!!!!!!

We appreciate you all more than words can express. Only with you can we save lives! THANK YOU!!

URGENT!! TWO PREGNANT BASSETT HOUND - DACHSHUND SISTERS NEED FOSTER ASAP.

Molly and Dolly were just left at a rural shelter that is FULL. They are each about 35 lbs and 2 years old. We need the following:

2. Funds to get them into emergency boarding so they are not euthanized.

PLEASE share/donate/foster. We are feeling desperate.

Email [email protected] to help. PLEASE. The clock is ticking.

1. HONEY
35 lbs/6 years, 4 months old/Female
Good with Kids? Honey did great playing with a 10-year-old at her former home.
Good with Dogs? Honey seems to be okay playing with other dogs but does not seem to want to share a home with one.
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how they are with cats. If that is needed, let us know and we'll work on getting that information!
Honey was returned from her adoptive home due to no fault of her own. She is a delightful companion who plays with children and knows a whole bunch of commands. She is a sweet girl who is energetic and lovable. She enjoys her fruits and veggies!

2. CHESTNUT
39 lbs/4 years old/Male
Good with kids? Due to his resource guarding, Chestnut would need to go home with children 14+
Good with dogs? Chestnut plays well with most dogs with supervision, but would need to be the only pet at home.
Good with cats? We do not currently know how he is with cats. We can work on getting that information if needed.
Chestnut loves people, and will melt in your arms with affection. He’s been overlooked again and again because of his food resource guarding behavior. He deserves a loving home with a confident and dog savvy family who can show him that he’s safe and loved.

Good with Kids? We do not know how Little Jerry does with kids.
Good with Dogs? Little Jerry is good with other dogs.
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how he is with cats. We can work on getting that information if needed.
Little Jerry came to us from one of our rural shelter partners. He is a very sweet boy who has cherry eye and will be getting treatment for HeartWorm. We think this sweet but shy boy would do great in a home with a confident resident dog who doesn’t mind having some company.

Good with Kids? We do not know how Bowie does with kids.
Good with Dogs? Bowie is good with other dogs.
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how he is with cats. We can work on getting that information if needed.
Bowie was found as a stray by one of our rural shelter partners. He is not a big fan of his crate but is a puppy who needs to be taught that the crate is a fun place. He needs someone who would be willing to work through his youth and give him some guidance with how to be a member of a family.

Good with Dogs? Sunshine does great with dogs
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how they are with cats. If that is needed, let us know and we'll work on getting that information!
Sunshine is missing one of her hind legs but she is still quick as can be. She is highly trainable and knows how to sit, do a down and can even roll over. She loves children and all people and would make a great addition to your home!

50 lbs/3 years, 8 months old/Male
Good with Kids? We have not seen JJ interact with children.
Good with Dogs? JJ likes to hang out with other dogs but is not a hard player.
Good with Cats? We do not currently know how they are with cats. If that is needed, let us know and we'll work on getting that information!
JJ came to HT from a rural shelter. The previous owner had him for one day and surrendered him - he wasn't even given a chance! He is a friendly, handsome boy and didn't get any interest while at the shelter, coming very close to euthanasia. We know we can find him the perfect home!

PRETTY, PRETTY PLEASE, Help Cookie find a foster home and get adopted!
We urgently need a foster home for sweet, 10 year old Cookie. Cookie is a lab mix of about 40 lbs who was returned to Homeward Trails in July after more than 6 years with her adopters and has been really struggling since.

Cookie, in her older years, is fairly dog selective, and would prefer to be the only pet in the home, which makes being at the Adoption Center very stressful for her. More significantly, she is dealing with some pain which makes navigating the stairs and gravel yards around the building hurtful and frustrating. She would love a home with a yard she can spend time in, or some gentle walks around a quiet neighborhood where she won't run into too many other dogs. She also loves water, and had a great time at a recent trip to a pond!

Mostly Cookie wants to spend quality, relaxing time around people. While she is not really fond of small children, she is incredibly sweet and loving in adult company. She would be thrilled to be able to be a couch potato in a calm home with a friend by her side.
Can you please give Cookie the home she deserves??

The call came late. A shelter partner had just gotten word from Animal Control that 22 beagles & hounds would be arriving any time. They had been living in squalor and too many complaints had stacked up and they had been signed over - thankfully.

Little food, no vaccines, outdoor living, just awful neglect - so much that multiple neighbors had called with fear they would die.

But when a shelter is full that means no space. At all. And euthanasia for these dogs or others to make space. It's the sad, harsh reality these days that almost all shelters face.

We cannot let these sweet dogs die after they finally escaped the awful place they were being kept. They are so friendly and get along with people and other dogs. We know with the funds and time we can find them the families they deserve.

But most will cost us an average of $900/each to fully vet - as they have ZERO vetting and we will need to get them all fully healthy, spayed, treated for heartworm/lyme/whatever else we find.

And our Medical Fund is spent. We did not anticipate this so we cannot help without the funds.

BUT a kind donor is going to help us do so by offering a week-long or weekend stay at their glorious condo in Virginia Beach. Yes - save lives AND relax/vacation!

Donate here or through the button below: https://www.mightycause.com/story/Beagleairlift

Our Story

Become a volunteer. Foster a dog or cat. Choose adoption. Make a donation. Share our posts. Fundraise with Facebook. Every action helps saves lives!

Our Mission: To find permanent adoptive homes in the Mid-Atlantic Region for homeless dogs and cats; to reduce the rate of euthanasia of adoptable animals; to support proactive spay/neuter practices; to promote positive and ongoing behavioral training; and to educate the public about how to care for their animals in a humane way.

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue (HT) is a DC area-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of homeless dogs and cats. Founded in 2001, HT works primarily with rural, under-resourced animal shelters in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and as far away as Mississippi, where animals face euthanasia due to limited space and funds. We run the 10th largest shelter in the state of Virginia, for the number of animals we take in. We have rescued more than 28,000 animals since our inception.

Our animals come from the streets of Puerto Rico where they endure incredibly harsh circumstances, with scarce food and no water, and many suffer from injuries and illnesses that leave their chances of survival slim. The 2020 earthquakes have created even more need for our services. Our animals come from countries like Thailand, South Korea and China where the dog meat trade unleashes horrible abuse on dogs, and cats roam the streets. Our animals come to us from individuals who can no longer care for them.
