Fun Fact Friday! Ever wonder what scabies look like under the microscope? Sarcoptic mange (aka scabies) in dogs is caused by a highly contagious skin mite usually picked up from wildlife. They cause severe itching which can lead to scabs and hair loss. This mite can be found in dog breeds of all ages and is contagious to other dogs and people. It is also nonseasonal, which means it can happen all year around. Sarcoptic mange in cats is very uncommon. Instead they can suffer from something called Notedric mange (referred to as feline scabies) which is similar to sarcoptic mange in dogs with similar side affects.
