Heading to the pool, beach, or lake can be a wonderful form of exercise and can help your pet cool off on a hot day. However, it’s important to be mindful of water safety for your pet to ensure your trip to the water doesn’t result in a trip to the ER.
A few helpful pointers when introducing your pet to water include:
💧Pick a shallow spot to start out and stay at the edge of the water.
💧Don’t force them in. Throwing a pet in the water who doesn’t want to swim can be traumatic for them.
💧Get in the water with them. When they start paddling with their front paws, lift their hind end so they understand how to float.

Jackson's Patient Story at MedVet Cincinnati
When an MRI revealed that Jackson, an 8-year-old Husky, had an unusual disk extrusion, rehabilitation and medication were initially recommended as his treatment plan. Unfortunately, his difficulty walking worsened, and he was referred to Dr. Susanna Schwartz at MedVet Cincinnati for further evaluation.
Dr. Schwartz opted for a CT scan to better visualize Jackson's bone structure, which showed two chronic herniated disks. Surgery to decompress these areas was recommended as the best course of action, considering Jackson was unable to walk on his own due to weakness in his rear legs. With his pet family onboard with the procedure, Dr. Schwartz successfully repositioned Jackson's spinal cord to its normal position.
We're delighted to share that at Jackson's recheck appointment, he was already walking better than before surgery 🎉 . Over the next several months, Jackson will continue to see neurological improvements and increased stamina. We are so thrilled for Jackson and his loving pet family!
