🚓🐾 Meet K9 Blu, a beloved therapy dog for the Wellston Police Department and a true hometown hero! 💙

Two weeks ago, while off duty, Blu was hit by a car and sustained some serious injuries, including a ruptured bladder, a pre-pubic tendon rupture (a tear in the connective tissue that helps support the pelvis), and a blood clot near his spinal cord. Thanks to the expert collaborative effort between the Critical Care, Neurology, Surgery, Rehabilitation, and Anesthesia teams at MedVet Columbus, Blu underwent a successful procedure two weeks ago to repair all of his injuries.

This past week brought some exciting progress—Blu took his first steps since the accident! 🐾 His recovery is moving in the right direction, and we’re thrilled with how far he’s come.

Blu isn’t just a therapy dog—he’s a friend to every child in town, and now the entire Wellston community is showing up for him. From lemonade stands to fundraisers, it’s heartwarming to see everyone rallying to support their four-legged hero. 💛🍋

A huge shoutout to Blu's care team during his stay at MedVet Columbus: Dr. Heather McKechnie, who helped stabilize Blu in the Emergency room initially upon intake before he was transferred to our specialty care; Dr. Jess Kmiecik, who performed Blu's spinal decompression; Drs. Shawn Kennedy and Kaitlin Daigle, who treated Blu's bladder rupture and performed his prepubic tendon repair; Dr. Emily Falk, who has been responsible for Blu's rehabilitation exercises and plan for his follow up care; Dr. Denise Radkey, who provided excellent pain management treatment for Blu; and Drs. Andrew Taylor, Jay Gladden, Floyd Williams, and Natalia Stefanovska, who were responsible for Blu's overall medical management. The Columbus Critical Care and ICU nursing teams have also been very involved with Blu's care, assisting every step of the way!

We're all cheering you on, Blu! 💪🐶

One-Eyed Willie sure knows how to keep life interesting! After more than 24 hours of persistent vomiting, his owner, Katie, brought him to MedVet Hilliard's ER, where our team discovered the culprit—a whole towel stuck in his stomach and under his tongue! 🫢

Willie needed surgery to remove the towel and extra support to help him regain his appetite, but with expert care across our specialty departments and plenty of love, he made a full recovery. Now, he’s back home where he belongs, hopefully sticking to treats instead of towels!

Willie’s journey started as a stray on the streets of Columbus, but when he walked right up to Katie at an adoption event, it was clear he had found his perfect match. We’re so happy he’s doing well—stay out of trouble, Willie!

The absolutely adorable Lana (Del Lab) is making amazing progress in her knee surgery recovery and is officially moving on to the next stage of healing with our Surgery team at MedVet Hilliard, and her incredible Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Sarah Bisgard! While she might not be thrilled about her fashionable recovery hat, we couldn’t resist snapping some adorable pics—because she’s just too cute not to share! 📸🐶

Keep up the great work, Lana! We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see you back to full zoomies soon.

Poor Dats wasn’t feeling his best when he came to MedVet Hilliard with vomiting and diarrhea. Thankfully, our team ruled out an internal obstruction, but he needed some extra care and hydration.

With the help of Dr. Jamie Constantino and Dr. Anna Bentley, Dats was feeling better and back to eating within 24 hours!

We’re so glad he’s home and on the mend. 💙

Sif is back in action! 💪

Playtime got a little too rough for adorable Sif when she fractured her right supraglenoid tuberosity—a part of the shoulder that helps with movement. But with time, care, and lots of love, she’s made an amazing recovery!

At her six-week recheck at MedVet Hilliard recently, Sif was all smiles and doing great. We’re so happy to see her back on her paws and ready for more adventures (with maybe a little less roughhousing 😉).

Way to go, Sif!

04/05/2025

How do you get a cat to pose in a silly hat? Tasty snacks, of course! 😺🍗

Chubbs recently came back for his final recheck after undergoing a perineal urethrostomy (PU)—a surgery that helps prevent dangerous urethral obstructions. This condition impacts a pet’s ability to urinate and is a life-threatening emergency that commonly affects male cats with Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD).

Thanks to his PU surgery at MedVet Hilliard with Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Sarah Bisgard and our amazing Surgery team, Chubbs is now safe, happy, and free to enjoy all the treats (and fashion statements) he wants!

For more information about FLUTD, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association: https://hubs.la/Q03fFGYD0

Hazel May loves shredding her toys 🧸, so when she started vomiting and having diarrhea, her family grew concerned and brought her to MedVet Hilliard for evaluation. To ensure she wasn’t dealing with a blockage in her intestines, our caregivers ran some tests and got the all-clear—no obstruction! 🎉

With a little help from Dr. Anna Bentley and her wonderful Doctor Coordinator, Breanna Swank, Hazel was sent home with medications to help her recover. Despite feeling under the weather, this bubbly girl’s tail never stopped wagging! 🐾

We’re so happy Hazel May is on the mend and back to her playful self!

Last year, sweet Lexi was brought to MedVet Cincinnati and diagnosed with lymphoma. With a six-month chemotherapy plan, she showed incredible resilience and responded beautifully to treatment!

Now, we’re thrilled to share that Lexi is in complete remission 🎉 — and through it all, she’s been a delightful patient, always holding our caregiver’s hands during exams and striking the cutest poses for photos with our Board-Certified Veterinary Medical Oncologist Dr. Jeanne Lane. 📸🐶

We’re so proud of Lexi and honored to be part of her journey back to health; let’s give her a big round of applause! 👏

When he started vomiting, retching, and showing signs of a swollen belly, Anubis’ family knew something wasn’t right. The symptoms were all too familiar—a few years ago, Anubis was treated for Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and twists.

Even though his stomach had been surgically tacked (a procedure to help prevent twisting), Anubis was still at risk. Thanks to quick action from Dr. Kathleen Sandford and our skilled Emergency team at MedVet Lexington, they placed a special orogastric tube to safely remove the gas and relieve the pressure, helping Anubis avoid a serious emergency surgery.

Now, he’s back to feeling wonderful and ready to enjoy life again!

Surgery & Snuggles – the MedVet Hilliard Experience!

As cute as a flower, Daisy Mae couldn’t resist a new toy… but when she accidentally swallowed a piece, it led to a blockage in the intestines that can be very dangerous. 🚨 Thankfully, she was brought to MedVet Hilliard, where our Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Sarah Bisgard, performed surgery to safely remove it.

Daisy Mae recovered beautifully and even got some extra-special snuggles from Dr. Bisgard, who just happens to have a soft spot for dachshunds🐾.

We’re so happy this little lovebug is back to feeling her best!

Lucas' family knew something wasn’t right when he suddenly stopped eating. They brought him to MedVet Akron, where our team quickly diagnosed him with large cell lymphoma—a type of cancer that affects the immune system. Thanks to digital cytology (a rapid cell analysis that helps diagnose diseases faster), we were able to start treatment right away!

Under the expert care of Dr. Jacqueline Bloch-Miles, Lucas began the CHOP chemotherapy protocol, a specialized treatment plan for lymphoma. And today? He’s in remission—no signs of cancer in sight!

Lucas continues to bring smiles to everyone he meets, and we’re so proud to be part of his healing journey. 💙 Join us in celebrating this special pup!

Killian is the sweetest Border Collie who first visited the MedVet Dayton Internal Medicine team back in 2022 with some concerning issues: diarrhea and constipation. These symptoms were starting to slow him down in his agility trials, so his mom brought him in for a thorough evaluation. Killian started seeing Dr. Robin Hopwood and Dr. Amy Oberstadt, along with the entire Internal Medicine team worked diligently to investigate his issues. Killian was diagnosed with perianal fistulas, which are painful sores around the a**s that can cause constipation and motility issues and inflammatory bowel disease.

We got Killian on the right combination of medications and a diet change to help him feel his best. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our team and Killian’s mom, he’s now back to running full speed in his trials and being the top dog! And if that’s not enough, Killian will even be a TV star as his latest trial aired on ESPN! What an amazing journey, Killian!

Did you know that human medications can be toxic to pets? This is an important reminder to always double-check pet medications and keep human meds out of reach 💊.

Sweet Dash had a bit of a mix-up—he accidentally received human medication instead of his own, which could have caused serious kidney damage. Thankfully, with quick action and a few days of specialized care at MedVet Hilliard, Dash’s kidneys remained healthy, and he’s now back home with no lasting issues! 🎉

Ace is breathing easy again! 💙

When Ace was brought to MedVet Hilliard struggling to breathe, our team quickly diagnosed him with pneumonia—a lung infection that can make it hard for pets to get enough oxygen. After two days of dedicated care, including antibiotics to fight infection and oxygen therapy to support his breathing, Ace was on the road to recovery!

Now, he’s back home, happy and healthy. 🏡 We’re so glad we could help this sweet pup feel better!

If your pet ever has trouble breathing, don’t wait—seek veterinary care right away.

Say hello to Easton, our charming 15-year-old Maltese mix who recently came to MedVet Cincinnati for a check-up with our medical oncology team! 🐾

Easton first visited us last year, when Dr. Karina Valerius diagnosed her with mediastinal thymoma, a rare chest tumor common in senior dogs. After completing her chemotherapy treatments this summer, Easton has been visiting us for regular follow-ups to keep an eye on her progress.

We were overjoyed to celebrate Easton's 15th birthday with her and her wonderful family during her last appointment. 💖 Easton is doing great, and we're so happy to be part of her journey!

🦟 Keep the buzz away! As we enjoy the great outdoors with our pets, it’s important to keep our pets safe from mosquitoes.

These pesky insects can transmit heartworm disease, which can be harmful to our pets. Make sure to use veterinarian-approved repellents and keep up with regular heartworm prevention treatments.

MedVet is celebrating National Nonprofit Day by spotlighting a very special program near and dear to our caregivers: the AVMF REACH Program.

We understand unexpected pet emergencies and specialty veterinary care may be a financial burden for pet families — this program breaks down barriers to access veterinary care by offering grants to over 100,000 AVMA members nationwide. Through the AVMF REACH Program and on behalf of our clients, MedVet veterinarians proudly support charitable care when financial barriers could keep patients from getting the care they need.

If you're interested and able to support pet owners in financial need, please consider making a donation to AVMF's REACH Program by clicking the donation link on this post.
