April 23rd is National Parvo Awareness Day!

Today marks the beginning of the parvo season, when dogs and puppies are most susceptible to contracting this debilitating and often fatal virus. Although it strikes throughout the year, late spring and summer are the most common seasons for parvo outbreaks.

While vaccination is the cornerstone to disease prevention, our friends at Elanco have shared some additional steps you can take to increase awareness and prevention this parvo season:

1. Know the signs and symptoms of parvo and how it spreads. Parvo is easily spread through f***s or even on shoes. If your dog is refusing to eat, is vomiting, has diarrhea or lethargy, call your veterinarian and get them checked for parvo.

2. If your dog tests positive for parvo, ask your veterinarian about Elanco's Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody, the first and only USDA conditionally approved targeted treatment for parvo that helps puppies feel better faster and get home sooner.

3. Check Elanco's parvo tracking system at DefeatParvo.com and sign up to receive parvo outbreak alerts in your area.

Be your pup's first line of defense by keeping yourself informed and up to date!

With springtime comes fresh air, budding flowers, and outdoor fun β€” plus some potential hazards for your pet.

Keep your pet safe this spring with these helpful hints (courtesy of our friends at Vetsource):

1. Pesky pests.
Warmer weather means an increase in fleas, ticks, and heartworm. Be sure your pet is on a year-round preventative and check them for ticks after walking in wooded or grassy areas.

2. Spring flowers.
Beware of blooms that are toxic to your pet, such as lilies, azaleas, rhododendrons, and daffodils. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness, and can even be fatal.

3. Gardening supplies.
Fertilizers, insecticides, and even mulch can be toxic. Always keep lawn and garden products out of paw’s reach.

4. Spring cleaning supplies.
Always keep household chemicals out of reach. Even all-natural products can be harmful to your pet, as they may contain irritants, fragrances, or dyes. Your best bet is to use cleaning products labeled as safe for pets on the bottle.

5. Windows and doors.
Check to make sure the screens in your windows and doors are securely in place before opening them to let the fresh air in. Also make sure there aren’t any holes in the screens. Cats in particular could jump or fall from a window without a secure screen.

6. Puddles.
Avoid stagnant water, which can be contaminated. Pets that drink from puddles could end up with an upset stomach or even a bacterial infection.
