Winter on the Farm: Embracing the Chill and the Beauty

This morning greeted us with another brisk 3 degrees—the second time this week! As the snowy cold settles in, life with horses presents its challenges. Frozen water troughs, icy paths, and layers of winter gear remind us of the season’s demands. Yet, amidst the chill, there’s so much to appreciate.

The snow blankets our pastures, softening the landscape and creating a peaceful hush. The crisp air invigorates, even if it makes for cold fingers and toes. Watching our horses navigate the snow with thickened coats and undeterred spirits is nothing short of magical. Beneath the frost, the earth rests, quietly preparing for spring’s renewal.

While the cold can alter our riding plans, it also invites us to slow down and cherish quieter moments with our horses. Whether it’s a peaceful grooming session, stretching exercises, or treating them to a special snack, winter offers time to connect and reflect. Celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and dream of the goals ahead.

Though the work may feel endless and the chill persistent, winter carries its own gifts. It strengthens us, our horses, and the land we call home. Spring is just around the corner, bringing its own excitement and promise.

When working with the parasympathetic nervous system, pure magic happens. Because the rider is communicating within this relaxed state, the horses grow to be happier, healthier, retain the information better, are more sound and they want to do their job.

10 minutes separated the top and bottom picture. The only change was leading the horse into a place where they could feel safe leaving flight mode. Tension patterns melt away, fascia relaxes, space is created around the vertebrae and nerves and healthier postural choices start to be made. Helping horses find relaxation again in their every day lives is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.

In 2022, we hosted our first "Humble Hoof Podiatry Clinic" and it was a really great time. I have been wanting to do another clinic and finally reached out to a great group of clinicians to make this happen!

Dr. Jenny Hagen (DVM, CJF, vet podiatrist and researcher), Celester Lazaris ("Balanced Through Movement" method), and Ula Krzanowska ("The Hoof Architect") are coming together to Amesbury, MA for a podiatry clinic on hoof balance, body compensations, approaches to lameness, and more. There will be a mixture of lecture as well as hands-on demonstrations with rehab horses. This clinic will be great for hoofcare pros, bodyworkers, veterinarians, or even horse owners who want an in-depth look at the body and hooves.

This clinic will take place in Amesbury, MA, at our track system rehab facility on October 25-26, 2025. Participant spots are limited as our goal is to break into small groups to work one on one with each clinician throughout the weekend.

I am SO excited to have these amazing professionals look at some of the difficult cases we come across in our practices!

This has a lot of great insight for anyone thinking about starting a track.

Most people who follow this page know that in addition to my full time hoofcare career, I also run a hoof rehab facility here in Massachusetts. I regularly get messages and comments asking about our track systems here- everything from how we set up our tracks, to how wide they are, the surfacing we used, how we feed, what type of fencing we use, etc. A recent post I shared on this page had a short video of our gelding track, and I had another influx of questions about it, which made me think that a podcast episode about it may be helpful!
