Rescuing is hard. It takes time, money, and a lot of emotional energy. Plans fall through, emergencies happen, and sometimes we’re just trying to do our best with very little.
This week, our rescue had scheduled UCD feral appointments — a free service provided to Solano County rescue groups on a rotating basis. At 6:30am the day of, we were told our spots were canceled. No other options, no time to pivot — the cats were going to have to be released and we’d try again later.
Then, someone from another rescue reached out. They had appointments at a different clinic and offered to let our cats take those spots. Amazing — problem solved. We confirmed we’d pay for the appointments and even made a post to try and raise funds for the unexpected cost.
Here’s where it went sideways.
Turns out those appointments were originally booked by a different rescue group — information we were not given. Once our post went up, the comments started: accusations of stealing donations, praising the wrong people, and misrepresenting facts. We deleted the comments and turned off commenting entirely. Then came the private messages.
This community is supposed to be in it "together". This was an opportunity to help cats — and it turned into chaos because of clout-chasing and infighting.
Did we make a mistake? Maybe. But we were never trying to mislead anyone. We were just trying to get cats fixed and covered the cost when asked. That’s it.
Will we help again? Absolutely.
Will we accept swapped appointments from other groups again? No, thank you.
To those who want to support us — thank you.
To those who want to support others — also thank you.
Just please, let’s all stop turning rescue into a battlefield. The cats deserve better. For a links to Solano County Shelters and Rescues please see comments.
