I cannot say it enough: please do not feed your dog a grain free diet, there is a link to heart disease!

“Two years ago, we started to see some concerns with the grain free diets and how that related to dilated cardiomyopathy and there's still a lot of questions that I thought after two years of discussion we would have a better handle on, but we don't.
We do know that taurine and some of the other amino acids in the grain free diets were concerns and it looks like without getting too deep into
DCM, dilated cardiomyopathy, it looks like there's probably three general categories of disease there. One is genetic, one is nutritional and one is we don't really understand, so there's idiopathic causes.”

“I mean, because the other part of it is, you know, you keep your dog or your bitch that you're going to breed from the litter, and you can see that they turn out great, and you're happy to breed them, but you'd really like to know...

…about how all their brothers and sisters turned out.”

Some experts from a podcast discussing about the discrimination breeders face:

“I think you know more than anyone that breeders are constantly being harassed under attack just for being breeders. They're victims of cyberbullies. They're being threatened with even physical violence.”

And for the shelters that have denied to release dogs to breeders that they have bred: “to have that breeder drive across the country and show up to that shelter and desperate to rescue that dog and take it into their home. I mean, that is an astounding, inspiring,
wonderful thing that we should be applauding the breeder for doing and so happy that the dog has that home to go to.
And instead of having it rejected because you are a capital B breeder. Education.
Which is why we've got to work on that education. We've got to work on that advocacy. We've got to use our social media to get the facts out there and change the conversation and turn the anti-breeder sentiment.”

Trying something new: homemade dog food. For now, I just plan to use it as a topper or more of a supplement for our pregnant & nursing mamas but how many of you make your own dog food?

I read a post today where I saw a lot of people projecting human emotions onto a dog who had just whelped a litter, saying she must be so tired, that she needed a break from motherhood, basically that she was being overbred if she had more than 2 litters in her lifetime. You cannot force a dog to be a good mother and it is true that some dogs are not. Then I remembered a podcast I listened to, it was talking about the pros of natural matings for stud dogs instead of TCI’s & surgical: “And we get that kind of a mindset. But sometimes we forget to watch our little bi***es who are flagging their tails, bumping their little butts right up into the dog's face. They are flirtatious, their ears are raised, they are showing that male, that stud dog, in every conceivable way that they can, including exposing their swollen v***a, which is now raised to a level on her rear end where he can aim and hit it. We forget they are more behaviorally minded than we are. And both of them have that behavior.”
The podcast went on to explain all the little details that happen in a natural mating that we can’t even begin to replicate. Please don’t misunderstand, I am not against AI; I have and will continue to use it as a tool when necessary. But what happens during a natural mating process is truly amazing, live cover will always be my first choice.

Words cannot express how proud and grateful I am to announce this for Flying D Kennels! All the hard work, the love, and the tears I have poured into my dogs. Huge thanks goes to my own personal little family for always supporting me and my dream. I couldn’t have done it without our amazing handler, Nikki helping us achieve those champions, and Crow The Cattle Dog achieving her multiple titles and for Flying D Nike achieving her rally novice title. This was a combined success thanks to members of the Flying D family! Thank you all!

Flying D Kennels

Flying D is a small farm located in NW Oklahoma. We have owned Australian Cattle Dogs for over 10 years and love the breed for their intelligence and versatility.

My aim in breeding my dogs is to preserve the temperament, appearance, and soundness of the breed. We strive to meet AKC breed standards. My dogs are remarkable family companions; they are socialized with children from birth. We do only a few limited breedings per year.

My adult dogs are screened for the currently recognized health problems in the breed and are OFA CHIC certified to provide you with healthy, quality puppies.
