Riley began Red Fern Companions with his father, Craig, with one goal: Provide the best, champion-quality English Golden Retrievers possible for families and professionals alike. To do this, Riley had to create a one-of-a-kind breeding and training program for Red Fern Companions that is unlike any other in the country. ty. Because of this, it is important to ensure that they are well trained and properly socialized and conditioned. At Red Fern, our experienced Director of Training has formed core curriculum programs for our puppies and their families. When this litter was born, we had one little girl that was stained GREEN and so at the brilliant suggestion of @glammadodie, we thought WICKED was a perfect litter name for these beautiful puppies! One of the first and most important steps in training your young pup is teaching them to follow you. This simple but powerful exercise lays the foundation for future leash training and strengthens the bond between you and your new puppy. Here’s how to get started: 1. Find a Distraction-Free Space: Begin in a quiet area where your pup feels comfortable and safe. Without the noise and distractions of the outside world, they can focus entirely on you. 2. Use a Motivator: Grab some of your pup’s favorite treats, touch/affection or a beloved toy. Hold it close to you and encourage them to follow as you walk a few steps. Use a cheerful tone and gentle praise to get them moving in your direction. 3. Reward and Praise: The moment they start to follow you, immediately reward them with a treat or touch and lots of praise. Positive reinforcement is key here—your pup will quickly associate following you with good things! 4. Gradually Increase Distance: As your pup becomes more confident, gradually increase the distance you walk before rewarding them. This helps to build their focus and teaches them to stay close, even as they explore new environments. 5. Practice Makes Perfect: Consistency is crucial. Make this a daily routine, practicing in different locations as your pup becomes more comfortable. Soon enough, your pup will naturally stay by your side, making leash training a breeze. By teaching your pup to follow you, you’re not just training them to walk on a leash—you’re building trust and communication. This early training sets the stage for a lifetime of happy, stress-free walks together. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
