Hemlock Hills Elk Ranch, LLC We are dedicated in providing quality USDA approved elk meat products, antler dog chews, and superior genetic breeding stock and trophy bulls.

In 2009 we began our adventure into the world of elk ranching with our 230 acre hunting preserve in Gilman, WI. The majesty of the elk, red deer, and white tail deer had us hooked. After a few years of guiding hunts we felt we needed to create our own reliable source for animals. In 2012 we started our breeding facility with our first 2 year old cow LuLu. That year we added 6 more cows and a breed

er bull, Thor. We then began our venture into the retail sale of elk meat and products. Our goal is to provide high quality, drug/hormone free, healthy meat that tastes great too. In 2014 we completed construction of our handling facility and hay/feed storage barn. Today we have 26 breeder cows including our prize white cow, Sugar. We have several breeder bulls including Nugget and Sunray with multiple young bulls with top quality genetic backgrounds. Our genetics come from some of the highest quality backgrounds in the United States and Canada including X-Ray, Korean Gold, Bucci, Undeniable, Imperious, and Garmadon.

Updates from the ranch:
It’s been a bit since we’ve posted. We’re surviving what I think has been the worst winter since moving down in 2019. Animals are loving it though. Hopefully get the last two waterers unthawed today and done with that for the season🙏.

We preg checked all our cows two weeks ago and got the results back this week. 36 confirmed bred out of 37 exposed! Good news for the calf crop however if you were one of our customers looking for a slaughter animal this spring, we won’t have one until summer or fall depending on how calving goes. Get your deposit in if interested; we’ll probably only have 2-4 available.

We’ll be taking a cow in this week and will have all my cut meat products available in a couple weeks. I will be undergoing another surgery (2nd of ???) in 2 weeks so depending on the recovery process, I probably won’t be attending the Farmers Market of the Ozarks until the end of March or early April. If you need something (meat, processed products, dog chews, velvet antler, … ) reach out and we can arrange pickup or delivery.

I’d like to thank all our loyal customers, friends, and followers especially those that regularly attend the Farmers Market of the Ozarks in Springfield MO. Unfortunately it’s looking like our season will be ending a bit earlier than normal. This week I ended up having “emergency” surgery on my hand/finger. Doc says absolutely no use for 6 weeks. If I can get some help I may try to attend a time it two before the holidays. I can ship any of our shelf stable products, antler dog chews, and gift boxes in time for the holidays. We also sell all our elk meat products off the farm south of Lebanon, MO. Thanks again for all the support over the years!

It’s been a month of hell on the farm; our busiest time of the year. Today we got the AI cows in with the backup bulls; the last step in the breeding process. We can breathe a bit easier until November. Since Labor Day we have:
- weened calves and got them in their winter pen.
- dewormed all the cows; got them in their breeding pens; white breeder bull in with white cow group.
- Shipped all our trophy bulls out
- dewormed, vaccinated, and cut the antlers off all the bulls
- Ran the AI cows thru to put CIDRs in
- Ran the AI cows thru 2 weeks later to remove CIDRs and give PMSG
-Ran the AI cows thru 60 hours later to inseminate
And in our spare time got 2 more pastures ready for renovation and finished our new 12 acre pasture.
Thanks to all who helped out: Dr. Clint Eastburn (herd vet), Dr Ray Favaro (AI vet), Adam Griffin (friend/helper who defies death by elk) and especially my wife Kathy. It’s not her favorite time but she helped me every step of the way and did an awesome job. She tolerates my ‘frustrations’ and never forgets a gate.

Join us tomorrow 10/5/24 at the Springfield Farmers Market of the
Ozarks for the introduction of three new products:
- elk smoked bratwurst
- teriyaki elk jerky strips
- sweet maple and bacon elk snack sticks
In addition the return of some of our all-time favorites:
- Tex-Mex elk jerky strips
- Tex-Mex elk snack sticks
- elk and cheddar summer sausage

We will be there from 8 am to 1 pm and have our fresh, frozen elk meat cuts too!

It's not all fun and games. One of my big breeder bulls busted the tip off his main beam a few days ago. I've been keeping a close eye looking for signs of potential infection. Well today I saw lots of flies on the dangling piece so decided to not risk his health and clean it up. Everything went well and looks good. 10 minutes after reversing him he was in grazing with his buddies.
