The "unknown mare"

The "unknown mare" Meet the "unknown mare" rescued from the kill buyers at WA auction.

Jezabel has had a good run but she can’t gain weight without her teeth floated and can’t do that until she gains weight. She’s still sweet as pie and loves being doted on but the greatest gift I can give her is the last act of kindness. If you can help support in any way, we’d greatly appreciate it.

Jezebel hopes you had a great Thanksgiving!

She soaked up some sun rays today and seemed to thoroughly enjoy her food! Saw her roll too for the first time and she seems to be feeling much better overall.

I need to find her a permanent pasture buddy so she stays calm. She fell in love with Chief in a neighboring pasture but when he wanders from the fenceline, she gets stressed, paces and sweats up a storm as she nickers for him so I'd like to place her with a buddy to share her days with since her quarantine will be up Saturday!

I've decided to name her Jezebel. It came to me the night she got here and has just stuck in my brain so.. Jezebel it is, Jezzi for short. She's put on pasture now as she prefers to stay close to her boyfriend "chief".

She let me put a blanket on her last night, even though it's only in the 40s and she's pretty coated up; I don't want her using any resources to stay warm.

Dr. Lewis called me yesterday to let me know her ACH came back normal (Cushings test) and all her other blood work came back normal so her only "issues" are being old, a bit arthritic (needing pain management) , and needing her teeth floated but Dr. Lewis wants to wait a couple months for her to gain some weight before sedating her.

So right now it's premium quality hay, Haystack pellets, and triple crown senior to put weight on her and make sure she's getting enough with what she can't get out of hay with her teeth. And of course her Equinoxx (pain management) , msm, butteless, and Wheat Germ Oil (added fat/anti inflammatory)...
Definitely the most expensive horse I have but happy she's doing well.

She was even running in pasture today!!

Below is a picture from 2 days ago on top for reference to her condition a week from getting here (bottom picture) you can already see her topline getting better.

Brought her back in the barn last night for feeding/meds and her and a pasture friend Chief (in seperate pasture) decided they couldn't live without seeing each other (at least you'd think that with all the whinying back and forth).

I took her out this morning and she pitter pattered trot up to pasture. I decided since it's only a low of 38-48 she could stay out for the next few days...

Her Equinoxx seems to be helping she doesn't have nearly the rigid movement she had before.

After trying some alfalfa pellets and Ultium grain I had on hand that she didn't like, a boarder graciously offered that I could try her Haystack Special Blend pellets and Triple Crown Senior feed which she is all about!

So I compared brands based on her dietary needs and put in an order for pickup tomorrow of , as well as Butteless, MSM supplement and Wheat Germ Oil.

Although she is on Equinoxx which is much better than Butte, it's still an NSAIDs and could cause problems in the long run with gastric health and ulcers. So I decided after hours of research and vet consultation that I will do a little test on dosage. They recommend using Equinoxx no longer than 14 days even though it's often recommend for indefinite use.

That gives me just under 2 weeks to get some MSM and Butteless (herbal supp) into her system and then give her a 2 day break and see how she does. The Wheat Germ Oil adds additional fats as well as anti inflammatory properties which will benefit in weight gain and joint comfort.

She may need Equinoxx every day, she may only need it in rotation, possibly every other day or maybe every 3rd day; which is the hope. Then that allows for her dosage to go up if need be as she ages vs starting at the high dose. This will also ensure her overall health in the process of keeping her as pain free and comfortable as possible.

Discovered why she is missing front teeth... a boarder captured this, she slides her teeth across the metal...she doesn't do it when I'm around. picked up the habit somewhere along her life...

I forgot to mention yesterday that she was cleared for isolated pasture turn out...

Gave her 3 Equioxx pills last night to jump start her (per Dr. Lewis) and you can tell she's feeling better!

Did a little jog on her way to pasture (was very respectful of my space, she was just so happy)
Turned her out and she smelt some smells and then decided to jog a bit, happy to capture the moment!

Vet Visit:

She was seen by Dr. Lewis today and this is a break down of what we know so far...

She is missing a couple back teeth for sure along with having only a couple front top teeth and needs to get her teeth floated.
By her bottom teeth she is estimated in her 20s but can't get more specific than that.

She has an old injury in her back left hip that healed tight which causes her leg to slap her foot down when she walks but fortunately that doesn't cause her pain.
She puts her feet wherever they land when walking which could be lack of muscle but could also be her age contributing to brain to feet function. And she is definitely arthritic.

She has cateracs in both eyes but light still gets through and she has reaction to movement so she can see ok just may have fog or blurred vision.

She can gain both weight and muscle, definitely needs calories.

No temp or signs of illness, everything is related to age and body condition.

Ran panels of blood work to check organ function because of her body condition (sunken flanks could mean issues) and to test for Cushings (PPID),
results should be back the beginning of next week.

I had the choice to put her on a Butte regimen for 10 cents per day but that can cause ulcers and gastric problems so I chose to go with Equinoxx, although roughly $2.50/day it is much better for her overall.

Ultimately, she will need pain management permanently and be a pasture pet at best, expected nothing of except to be loved on and retired, which is what I expected.

This is just the beginning of her road to recovery...

We will see what her panels come back with; if her organs aren't properly functioning it was suggested to put her down but for now; she is eating, drinking, nickering when you walk in, talking to the other horses, and has light in her eyes and I will fight for her, for as long as she has fight left in her. ❤❤❤

She was super stiff and uncomfortable tonight, I think it's the weather coming in so gave her a little butte, to help ease her joints and rubbed her legs down with anti inflammatory cream too...

I finally cut out her auction number, I'd tried for a few days to let mineral oil do its magic and I'd gotten it 3/4 of the way off but that last bit just wouldn't budge and I just couldn't stand seeing 017 on her butt anymore; thats all she is? A number?
Luckily it's only a small spot and it'll grow back. Worked out her remaining dreadlocks and braided her tail, she stopped eating, turned around and put her head down and into my stomach for rubbins... this mare has a personality made of pure gold!

The vet comes tomorrow! Yes, tomorrow! I feel like this has been the longest week, high anticipation to see exactly what I'm dealing with here...

Thank you to everyone thats made donations for her recovery and opened a spot in your heart for this ol' gal. Anything helps with her journey to true freedom! ❤
If you'd like to still donate, please do so @ https://gofund.me/931b0772

I will post update tomorrow after the vet has come with what we were able to get checked and where we go from here!

She is becoming more vocal with each day, welcoming you into the barn to say "hello"
She seems to have a hard time eating hay but she manages over time. Attempted to give her pellets instead but she is not having it.
I think she will need to get her teeth floated as she had a lot of excessive jaw movement to grind her food up but at least she eats the most tender orchard and alfalfa leaves. Looks better already to me, amazing what even a little food and water can do over the course of a few days. 2 day to vet visit Friday afternoon and will post updates as to what has been discovered and what is in store for this ol' gal.

Thank you to all that are following her journey and have donated to help her along the road to a new life!

Soon we will vote on a name 😀

Keep track of the "unknown mares" diagnosis and progress here.
I want to thank the supporters of her and I thought this would be a great way to watch her transform with love and proper care!
She is absolutely a sweetheart and definitely an old gal, missing some teeth and looks to have been bred multiple times resulting in her "swayback".
Stay tuned, feel free to ask questions and watch for the post to name her!
