Shortly after Kristen Zang adopted her puppy Emma, she received jarring news. Emma was diagnosed with Distemper, a condition that leaves most dogs affected by it having to be put to sleep. Determined to save Emma, Kristen set out to learn everything she could about dog nutrition and the pet food industry. This was around the same time that many of the pet food companies were issuing recalls. Zang

consulted veterinarians, nutritionists and other specialists while simultaneously studying the diets of most dogs. She learned that most of what was being sold at pet stores was not healthy for them. Through her research, Kristen developed homemade dog food (which is actually people food) that was compliant with the AAFCO’s recommended dietary balance among proteins, vitamins, fats and micronutrients. Thanks to the health benefits of Kristen’s creation, all signs of Distemper quickly disappeared. Emma is now getting ready to party down at her Sweet 16! After experiencing the joy of Emma’s restoration to excellent health, Kristen wanted to share these benefits with other dog owners. What began as a small operation out of her home is now a rapidly growing company serving many satisfied and steadily returning customers. She now works in a commercial kitchen to accommodate the volume of food she’s producing, and yet maintains her personal touch by cooking everything from scratch. Kristen hopes to continue to grow Emmalou’s Kitchen exponentially and be able to share the love with as many dogs as possible.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OUR CUSTOMERS 🎄 🎄

This year, with the way that the holidays fall on the calendar, FedEx shipping is extremely limited.
The last day we can ship product before the new year will be December 16th. If you’re on auto-ship and are expecting a shipment either the week of December 23 or December 30, you will have to choose between having your delivery shipped earlier on December 16th or shipped later on January 6. This includes all Ground and Express shipments.

I adopted Emma Lou from the West Los Angeles shelter in 1997 when I was 23 years old. We grew up together. She protected me and loved me unconditionally and I did the same for her. She ultimately was the reason why in 2007 I started Emma Lou’s Kitchen (see our story on our pinned post)

Since then we have made A TON of fresh food for a lot of dogs all across the US and I love what we get to do. But my heart has always been in rescue. Someday I would love to fulfill a life long dream and have my own senior/disabled dog sanctuary, but in the meantime, to show our support to the rescue community, we donate food and give monetarily to shelters and dog rescues.

There’s ALWAYS ways you can help rescue dogs in need. Whether it be your time, money or educating people on the importance of spay/neutering.

And to the rescue community, thank you! You are all heroes 🐶

These Dark leafy greens are considered a superfood. 💪 They have a dense nutritional profile and provide a variety of great benefits to your dog. They are rich in glucosinolates which are thought to inhibit the growth of certain cancers. They have lots of magnesium which is great for your dog’s brain 🧠 and heart health. They also contain iron which helps deliver oxygen to the blood which promotes energy and wellness 🐕 Finally, collard greens are loaded with soluble fiber which can help your dog if they have sensitive digestion.

How to prepare: before giving them to your pup, be sure to remove the spine of the collard greens and steam them, mix them with some chicken or beef liver and add a little to their bowl every day.
