And please share
This week has brought immeasurable tears and grief as we laid Austin to rest on Thursday morning (and when I have had time to process it all, I will circle back to him on social media), and our beloved Scotty was rushed to Tufts on Thursday afternoon for colic, and colic surgery on Friday afternoon. While the surgery itself was deemed successful, the road to recovery is long and not without great risks. Surgery was a Hail Mary to save his life, and hopefully bring him home to the people who love him beyond measure.
Scotty is the bedrock of our lesson program, an OG pony who has been with us for six and a half years, and is loved beyond measure. With the patience, kindness, and honesty of a saint, he has taught countless riders to walk, trot, canter, and jump, as well as groom, tack up, bathe, and care for horses. His personality far exceeds the size of his body, and his silly antics put a smile on anyone’s face who comes across his path. But most importantly, with the biggest heart a medium pony could have, he has taught children to love horses. He has taught them empathy, responsibility, persistence, and infused them with confidence and self esteem that gets taken into their other daily endeavors. At his core, we have always said how he, above all the others, loves being a teacher and a school horse.
That being said, emergency surgery, a hospital stay with ICU care, and recovery care do not come cheap. We elected to save his life, but at a staggering cost of likely around $15,000. So many have asked how they can help, and anything you are comfortable with will make an impact.
