What is hand reflexology?
Hand reflexology is a massage technique that puts pressure on various reflex points around your hands. The belief is that these points correlate to different body parts and that massaging the points can help to relieve symptoms in other areas of the body.
To perform hand reflexology on yourself, begin by applying a lotion and warming the hand with gentle circles on the palm and wrist. Next, use your opposite hand to massage each finger, from the knuckles to the tip, and then gently pull on each finger to stretch the muscles. Finish by pressing on various reflex points, like the thumb base or areas along the fingers and palm, using techniques such as "thumb walking.
1. Warm up your hands
Apply lotion to your hands for smoother massage.
Use the thumb of your opposite hand to massage the heel of the other hand in gentle, circular motions.
Massage the palm at the base of each finger with circular motions.
2. Massage and stretch each finger
Using your thumb and forefinger, massage the fleshy part between the thumb and index finger by moving up and down along the muscle.
Wrap your opposite hand around each finger and gently rotate it at the joints.
Gently pull each finger from the base to the tip to stretch the muscles and relieve joint pain.
Rub the top, bottom, and sides of each finger vigorously from the base to the tip.
3. Focus on specific areas
Use your thumb to "thumb walk" across the palm, especially along the lines representing the spine, digestive organs, and adrenal gland.
Massage the "lung meridian" point by running your finger along the side of your thumb from the tip down to the wrist, pressing gently on any tender spots.
Use your thumb or forefinger to apply firm pressure to specific reflex points, working your way from the wrist up to the fingertips.
4. Finish and relax
Gently press on different reflex points, such as those on the wrist, with the side of your thumb or forefinger.
Clasp your fingers together and gently pull, focusing on the muscles in your palm.
End the massage with a relaxing wrist rotation on each hand.
Finally, rub your hands together to create warmth and finish with a few deep breaths.
Drink a large glass of water to help flush out toxins. rel
