June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. Summer is the time of year when large litters of kittens are often born and end up in shelters. It’s often called Kitten Season. To raise awareness and help more cats and kittens find loving homes Barkley Square is proud to partner with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Throughout the month of June we will be selling paper Paw Prints in support of Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. To our Dog Families,
​No doubt you’ve heard about a “new” contagious respiratory illness in dogs in the last month to six weeks. ​I want to start out by letting you all know that here at Barkley Square we are being proactive and not reactive. We are separating the dogs and making sure they are not in contact with each other unless family. We have spaced our grooming tables as well. We are also vetting our clients over the phone when we confirm their appointments that their pets are not experiencing any signs of this respiratory illness. We practice on a daily basis, the high standards set out before us from the PPGSA standards of Safety and care and sanitation. petgroomersandstylists.org/standards/
There is a lot of information coming from Oregon specifically, which seems to be having the most serious outbreak currently. It is not known what is specifically causing this outbreak, but it is certain that it is not as “new” as the media is making it out to be. In the Washington, D.C. region, cases have been reported since about last November (2022). The severity and symptoms are extremely variable, from mild to severe cough, fever, lethargy, increased or difficulty breathing, and vomiting or retching. A very large percentage of the dogs we’ve seen have been boarded, or in daycare in the days or weeks leading up to the onset of symptoms. This has been from ALL boarding and daycare facilities, not just a few. Symptoms last from about one week to up to 4 to 6 weeks. While there have been reports of some dogs dying of pneumonia in protracted and severe cases, it is important to know that most dogs recover within a month or so. Antibiotics are often prescribed, as at least a few of the possible pathogens (causative agents) are responsive to the antibiotic Doxycycline. The University of New Hampshire has been attempting to identify and sequence a suspected pathogenic organism, but it has so far defied identification. For now, recommendations from the veterinary community revolve around maintaining wellness care and appropriate vaccinations and seeking prompt care should your pet show symptoms of any illness. If possible, dog parks, boarding and day care facilities should be avoided. The operators of these facilities are doing everything they can to prevent the spread of illness, but it only takes one coughing dog to sicken many others. If you are boarding your pet, you are assuming some risk, just like sending your child to preschool. If it is available to you, seek out a Professional pet care company and see if they offer in house stays or multiple walks. ( we do offer this at Barkley Square) Recommended vaccines for all dogs include distemper, parvo, parainfluenza, canine influenza (both strains), and bordatella. Please discuss this with your veterinarian. It should be known that the influenza vaccine has been in short supply this summer and fall, so reach out as soon as possible to your veterinarian to reserve one for your dog.

Here at Barkley Square we take great care of your furry babies. Lulu here is 15 and has difficulty standing up on her own especially when on the table. With seniors we make sure to take a gentle and delicate approach to make the dogs as comfortable as possible. With her age and limitations Lulu gets what is called a “comfort” groom. This means we do whatever we can on her to make her as comfortable as possible and don’t worry about the finished look as much as we usually would. We love furry friends of all ages and sizes 🐾🐶

There is a virus out there, as many have heard, that is scaring dog owners in our area. Please don’t panic, just be prepared and stay ahead of this mysterious illness.

There is not enough information yet to determine this virus a threat to us.

Using these few guidelines will help you be prepared and protect your pup.

1. Make sure your pup is up to date on their vaccinations, adding bordetella and canine influenza vaccines too. ( allow 2 weeks after these vaccinations to pass before having your pup interact with other canines, this gives your dog time to build immunity )

2. Keep your pup from areas where they are going to come nose to nose with other canines. Try going to dog parks on non peak hours. ( if your pup is ill or needs to see their vet for medical care, don’t delay)

3. It’s best to keep puppies that have not received all their vaccinations and high risk pups (think geriatric, autoimmune, health conditions that cause a lower immune response) home and away from day cares, kennels, and over crowded grooming stores.

Calmness and vigilance are key. By staying informed and taking preventative measures, you can help keep your pup healthy.

Barkley Square will put in place their protocol for safety:

We will be screening all clients before setting appointments, we will put in an isolation process so we are not allowing any nose to nose greetings, we will only allow one family in at a time, sanitation, disinfecting and cleaning will be heightened.

Together we will keep our pups safe.

Mysterious dog illness that you may have heard about in the news has not been found in our area.

At our spa we already practice stringent disinfecting processes but to keep us vigilant so our clients will feel safe we have created a new protocol for safety.

1. Screening all clients before scheduling to insure they have not been in the affected areas within the last 10 Days. Making sure our clients have well pets, no coughing, runny eyes, runny nose, or lack of energy. Our new puppies without all their vaccinations, geriatric, and immune compromised pups will be encouraged to wait to come in and talk to their vet.

2. Scheduling pets to come at varible times so we are avoiding nose to nose contact.
3. We will be spreading our tables further apart as well as having only one dog on the floor passing thru at a time.

Please do not panic, let’s be informed, let’s be proactive and prepared.
