Starting off Dental Awareness Month with a routine dental scaling and polishing on Roman, owned by Tyrell one of our surgical technicians. Dental hygiene is very important for our companion animals. Preventative oral hygiene in companion animals is often overlooked, but is very important to their overall health. Bacteria from tartar buildup can cause bone loss in the jaw, which holds teeth in place. This bacteria can also enter the blood stream which overtime can affect the heart and kidneys. Routine dental cleanings help keep tartar buildup minimal, but also allows your veterinarian to look at the state of your pets mouth more thoroughly while they are under anesthesia. Dental radiographs can show disease that hides below the gum line, which can worsen over time, leading to pain, bone loss which then leads to dental extractions, crown amputations, etc. Routine annual cleanings and brushing your pets teeth once daily or even a few times a week is a great way at preventing some forms of dental diseases such as Periodontitis, Gingivitis, Gum Erosion, Bone Loss from tartar accumulation, etc. If you have any questions about oral health in companion animals, please feel free to contact us or visit https://vohc.org for some helpful tips and approved dental products.
