Meet Tomato 🍅!

This Week: Training Rewards

⚫Why reward your dog?
When you reward your dog for a specific behavior, it creates a positive association thus encourages them to repeat that behavior in the future, making training more effective. It also clarifies expectation, rewards help clarify which behaviors are desirable, guiding your dog toward actions you want to encourage.

⚫Types of rewards
Every dog is different and has certain preferences with rewards. Try multiple types of rewards to find out what your dog loves most!
-Food and treats
-Toys and playtime
-Praise and affection
-Freedom to their environment

⚫Common mistakes
-Delaying rewards: Don't wait too long after your dog provides the behavior you want, this can lead to confusion about what earned the reward.
-Overusing: Avoid using high-value rewards too frequently without fading them, this can lead to your dog expecting them every time.

Maizy is a 1 year old English Lab here for the Advanced Obedience Program! 🐾

We will be working hard on her impulse control, walking nice on a leash and an intro to the e-collar for recall. I am super excited to work with her and see here progress! 🧡

Such an amazing opportunity and experience in Post Falls, Idaho with this past week! 🐾

I was able to expand my knowledge about anxiety, aggression, resource guarding and behavior modification.

I am incredibly thankful for Steph and her staff at MethodK9 and all of their expertise and knowledge they were able to share. I am also very thankful for for giving me the opportunity to learn more. I am feeling very blessed today! 🥹💕

This Week: Impulse Control

⚫What is impulse control?
Your dog's ability to manage their instincts and urges, allowing them to resist temptations or distractions in order to behave appropriately.

⚫Importance
Working on impulse control will help your dog's ability of self-control, work on regulating their emotions, provide safety for you and your dog, helps with anxiety, increases focus/attention, and builds your relationship.

⚫Ways to work on impulse control
Using your sit(stay), down(stay) or place commands in multiple scenarios will encourage your dog to think before acting. Utilize these commands in your everyday life. For example: when people come over, when you are eating dinner, when you go check the mail, when you have children around, etc.

‼Remember‼
By teaching and reinforcing impulse control, you help your dog become more balanced, well-mannered, and confident, ultimately leading to a more enjoyable and safe experience for both of you.

Sydney Swanson’s Story

Hello, My name is Sydney Swanson. I just recently graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in Animal Science and a minor in Business Administration. Ever since I was young, I have had a connection and love for dog. After graduating, I have found what I am truly passionate about, which is training dogs. My plan is to go to a dog training school to get professionally certified in the next year. My dream is to open my own training facility. In 2016, I decided I would make pet bows and bowties in order to help with my college loans and to pursue my ultimate dream as a professional dog trainer. I also now offer dog walking as well!
