Cadbury’s “Speckled 6” litter are growing and their spots are starting to shine through like little Dalmatians! The two completely white bunnies are getting their little “Charlie” markings. I find them extremely charming! 🥰

First looks 👀 at the kits 🥰

My protocol is to check on them soon after delivery to make sure everyone is alive and fed. This allows me to give momma an extra snack to boost her calories (& spirit!) to distract her while I check them out and snap a couple photos. I only spend a minute to disturb them the least amount as possible! Their nests are done so beautifully; I honestly hate disturbing them! Cadbury had her 6 babies lined up in a neat beautiful row. 😍🥹 I cannot wait to see these 9 kits grow and flourish. These mommas are doing a great job, and my heart is full.

I was saddened that even though we had 5 does successfully bred, only 2 have delivered. Those odds are not in our favor. Some hard decisions are ahead. But for today, we are grateful for Cadbury & Graycie doing their part and being great mothers. 💞

🔆Hopefully on the way to good news!🔆
Graycie has started pulling fur! It could still be a day or two, but this is a great sign that she is indeed pregnant, and that she should be kindling in the near future. 🐰 💖

So unfortunately, Peaches & Keiko’s due date week came and went with no kits. 😢 I held out hope for as long as I could. Today I had to move the nest boxes over to the next set of potential moms though! Cadbury is the first to receive her nest box, and she wasted NO time preparing. Silly girl!

Unfortunately, our little rabbitry hasn’t been immune to this ⬆️ ⬇️ weather causing chaos to our animals. This Sunday’s cold rain with today’s sunny 50-60 degree afternoon swing has just plummeted our bunnies’ immune systems. Unfortunately it was too much for Biggie, our last foster fail from Terri’s takeover last summer. He passed away this afternoon peacefully in his hutch. 😢 While our hearts are saddened, it did make me take a harder look at our other rabbits.

That’s when I noticed that QuickSilver wasn’t looking too great. Her eyes were runny, and her food and water looked untouched which is NOT like her at all. So she is inside for now getting cleaned up and monitored until I can figure out what is happening with her. She looks miserable.

Peaches & Keiko received their first nest boxes 2 days ago! They are due in today! 💕 Thankfully the temps have warmed up a little bit for these first time moms. I’m excited but guarded. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻for some good fur pulling, beautiful nests, and warm wiggly kits. I’ve been outside trying to keep tabs on these two. Peaches has definitely slowed down on feed. That’s a good sign that kindling is near!!

I was hoping I would have better news coming back from the summer break. Unfortunately, Graycie’s first litter with Stitch, I was unprepared for. After last Saturday’s wonderful Farmer’s Market, I came home to find 2 beautiful kits on the ground. One lilac otter and one blue otter. What a beautiful pair to have lost. Her due date and Sequin’s was written for 10 days ago. It came and went with no delivery. So 6 days ago I pulled the nest boxes from both of them assuming it was a case of summer heat sterilization for the boys. And rebred the does again. Graycie was actually receptive to the breeding. Which there again was a sign to me that she was NOT pregnant.
So coming home last Saturday I was in total shock and tears to find these beautiful babies. She didn’t even look pregnant. But with only the two babies, that would make sense. She didn’t pull fur or show any other signs to me. I went ahead and put a box in her space as well as Sequin’s just in case. Since then, still not babies for each of them. Next Thursday is the next due date for 5 of my does (that was including Sequin & Graycie). Who knows what is going to happen now… But for today and until then, my heart is with these twins. They deserved better. I’m so sorry little ones. Rest in peace my loves. 🤍🤍🐰🐰

Graycie is a bit of a pro, but Sequin is shy to find her way around the nestbox. We are so excited for the possibility of kits! 🥹🥰 After a long grueling summer with a lot of loss on our homestead side of things, it would be really great to have a little bit of bunny love to be reminded of why we work so hard year round. ❤️‍🩹

We may be in for an exciting end to our week here! Sequin & Graycie are looking surprisingly full! I had no idea until yesterday that Sequin might be pregnant! 😳 I’ve been keeping my eye on Graycie, but Sequin is a complete shock, as I did not see any successful breeding during our attempts! We will see soon! 🤞🏻 🤞🏻 🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰

It’s another BEAUTIFUL day out here today. For some reason my mind just ✨ clicked ✨, and I thought: “Oh yes, I should finish this waterer that I started months ago. It will be no big deal.”

It’s amazing what a cool breeze and temperatures in the 80’s can do for your motivation and memory! 😂

Next project will be removing all the bunnies and deep cleaning the hutch. I was sick with pneumonia earlier this year, and the gutter system became so clogged with hay it has never quite recovered. 😕 But, now I have a 200 foot hose and pressure washer to help me get the job done with the least amount of stress for these bunnies. Wish me luck! 🍀

Well, unexpectedly yet warmly, we welcomed this little doe into our Rex’N Texan family last night. A friend posted her as a FREE, possibly pregnant doe adoptable at the local shelter. I called Andrew and asked if he would be willing to pick her up after work. He agreed, and before another hour was up she was safe in B’s arms. G named her. For once in our lives, ALL the kids agreed on a name!

Please help us welcome “LUNA” 🌙 to our Rabbitry. 🐰💖

🎉 💦 We got the leaking to 🛑! Now that the misters are working perfectly, ALL the rabbits are so excited and happy. It was so fun to see them excited. I believe they thought it was raining at first 🌧️. These misters will help to reduce the temperature up to 15/20 degrees!

You can also see *some* of our new additions here, including Biggie (black otter Buck), and a beautiful Castor doe (unnamed). We also have a few more surprises to show you soon! 🐯🐇 and one GIANT of a surprise to announce soon! 😉

Have you been wondering where we’ve been? We’ve been trying to survive the 110 degree Texas summer index! This heatwave 🔥 for August has been no joke. Late July I installed this really awesome shade screen for the morning direct ☀️ was beginning to be torturous for these bunnies.

In August, for the first time this year we had to drag out the extension cords and box fans. When that wasn’t enough, I installed this misting system. Watch to the end to see if it works!

We are happy to list our remaining available kits from our 🐸LEAP LITTER🐸. Both black otters & 1 chocolate otter doe have already been taken home to their new families! 2 more chocolate otter does are now available for their forever homes! Doe #3 I have decided to hold onto for a little while to see what her coat decides to do. If you are interested in doe #3, please let me know and I will put you on a wait list should I decide to let her go. 🤎🤍 Will she be chocolate? Will she lilac? She just can’t seem to decide. 😉 At about 9-10 weeks we should be able to tell. 🎉

It is with a humble heart we announce the devastating loss of Cadbury’s second litter: “the Cherished Six”. This is one of those unfortunate things that happen when you breed rabbits. You never really get used to it. Each birth is exciting. Each death takes its toll. It is hard to comprehend, and it’s even harder to experience first hand. Cadbury delivered a day late. The temperature swung from 87 to 40 degrees in just 24 hours after delivering, not to mention a torrential 12+ hour downpour of rain and lightning that we hadn’t experienced in a while. When I went to check on them Sunday morning, I was distraught to find them. The nest box was dry, and we tried to revive them. Unfortunately our efforts were futile, and we had to accept their fates. Our children hugged us tight as we prayed over them, shed tears for them, and said our goodbyes. They knew only love. ❤️ We are going to let Cadbury recover and rest for the remainder of Spring & Summer. We will try again once Fall brings cooler temperatures again. We love her and know she is confused as well.
