I was hoping I would have better news coming back from the summer break. Unfortunately, Graycie’s first litter with Stitch, I was unprepared for. After last Saturday’s wonderful Farmer’s Market, I came home to find 2 beautiful kits on the ground. One lilac otter and one blue otter. What a beautiful pair to have lost. Her due date and Sequin’s was written for 10 days ago. It came and went with no delivery. So 6 days ago I pulled the nest boxes from both of them assuming it was a case of summer heat sterilization for the boys. And rebred the does again. Graycie was actually receptive to the breeding. Which there again was a sign to me that she was NOT pregnant.
So coming home last Saturday I was in total shock and tears to find these beautiful babies. She didn’t even look pregnant. But with only the two babies, that would make sense. She didn’t pull fur or show any other signs to me. I went ahead and put a box in her space as well as Sequin’s just in case. Since then, still not babies for each of them. Next Thursday is the next due date for 5 of my does (that was including Sequin & Graycie). Who knows what is going to happen now… But for today and until then, my heart is with these twins. They deserved better. I’m so sorry little ones. Rest in peace my loves. 🤍🤍🐰🐰

Graycie is a bit of a pro, but Sequin is shy to find her way around the nestbox. We are so excited for the possibility of kits! 🥹🥰 After a long grueling summer with a lot of loss on our homestead side of things, it would be really great to have a little bit of bunny love to be reminded of why we work so hard year round. ❤️‍🩹

We may be in for an exciting end to our week here! Sequin & Graycie are looking surprisingly full! I had no idea until yesterday that Sequin might be pregnant! 😳 I’ve been keeping my eye on Graycie, but Sequin is a complete shock, as I did not see any successful breeding during our attempts! We will see soon! 🤞🏻 🤞🏻 🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰

It’s another BEAUTIFUL day out here today. For some reason my mind just ✨ clicked ✨, and I thought: “Oh yes, I should finish this waterer that I started months ago. It will be no big deal.”

It’s amazing what a cool breeze and temperatures in the 80’s can do for your motivation and memory! 😂

Next project will be removing all the bunnies and deep cleaning the hutch. I was sick with pneumonia earlier this year, and the gutter system became so clogged with hay it has never quite recovered. 😕 But, now I have a 200 foot hose and pressure washer to help me get the job done with the least amount of stress for these bunnies. Wish me luck! 🍀

Well, unexpectedly yet warmly, we welcomed this little doe into our Rex’N Texan family last night. A friend posted her as a FREE, possibly pregnant doe adoptable at the local shelter. I called Andrew and asked if he would be willing to pick her up after work. He agreed, and before another hour was up she was safe in B’s arms. G named her. For once in our lives, ALL the kids agreed on a name!

Please help us welcome “LUNA” 🌙 to our Rabbitry. 🐰💖

🎉 💦 We got the leaking to 🛑! Now that the misters are working perfectly, ALL the rabbits are so excited and happy. It was so fun to see them excited. I believe they thought it was raining at first 🌧️. These misters will help to reduce the temperature up to 15/20 degrees!

You can also see *some* of our new additions here, including Biggie (black otter Buck), and a beautiful Castor doe (unnamed). We also have a few more surprises to show you soon! 🐯🐇 and one GIANT of a surprise to announce soon! 😉

Have you been wondering where we’ve been? We’ve been trying to survive the 110 degree Texas summer index! This heatwave 🔥 for August has been no joke. Late July I installed this really awesome shade screen for the morning direct ☀️ was beginning to be torturous for these bunnies.

In August, for the first time this year we had to drag out the extension cords and box fans. When that wasn’t enough, I installed this misting system. Watch to the end to see if it works!

We are happy to list our remaining available kits from our 🐸LEAP LITTER🐸. Both black otters & 1 chocolate otter doe have already been taken home to their new families! 2 more chocolate otter does are now available for their forever homes! Doe #3 I have decided to hold onto for a little while to see what her coat decides to do. If you are interested in doe #3, please let me know and I will put you on a wait list should I decide to let her go. 🤎🤍 Will she be chocolate? Will she lilac? She just can’t seem to decide. 😉 At about 9-10 weeks we should be able to tell. 🎉

It is with a humble heart we announce the devastating loss of Cadbury’s second litter: “the Cherished Six”. This is one of those unfortunate things that happen when you breed rabbits. You never really get used to it. Each birth is exciting. Each death takes its toll. It is hard to comprehend, and it’s even harder to experience first hand. Cadbury delivered a day late. The temperature swung from 87 to 40 degrees in just 24 hours after delivering, not to mention a torrential 12+ hour downpour of rain and lightning that we hadn’t experienced in a while. When I went to check on them Sunday morning, I was distraught to find them. The nest box was dry, and we tried to revive them. Unfortunately our efforts were futile, and we had to accept their fates. Our children hugged us tight as we prayed over them, shed tears for them, and said our goodbyes. They knew only love. ❤️ We are going to let Cadbury recover and rest for the remainder of Spring & Summer. We will try again once Fall brings cooler temperatures again. We love her and know she is confused as well.

Cadbury has been hard at work making the perfect nest for her litter due on Wednesday. I cannot wait to see if she duplicates the Lucky 🍀 7 (all black otters!) or if she has some variety in kit colors this go around. Only time will tell for this amazing momma. It’s extra snacks and quiet time for Cadbury as we await her little bundles of joy. ❤️ Last time she waited to pull fur until she was in labor. So we will await the sight of fur flying as a sign that the time is near!

🐸LEAP LITTER UPDATE🐸
Graycie is proving with a second chance, she can flourish. 🥰 We obtained this (now) beautiful grey Rex doe from another rabbit homesteader that didn’t want her anymore. The owner said she was an “Okay mother” and “didn’t want to bother with her” anymore. Look at her now. 🥹 Six beautiful babies all healthy, large, and without any help. This video has it all: heartwarming, adorable, and slapstick comedy rolled all into one short video clip. Watch till the end to catch it all. 😆 There has been a lot of interest in this litter already, especially does, so if you’re wanting one of these little cuties, please reach out soon to get on the waitlist. ❤️ ✅ I may be keeping one of the chocolate does for our program should there be an opportunity. Thanks for all your support, shares, and comments.

And just like that 🫰🏻, the last of the Lucky 🍀 7 Litter have found their forever homes. These two boys are going to the same family, just two different locations. 💙💙 We had affectionately termed the first buck “Frogger” as he would lay with his feet tucked like a frog when he was a baby. He will be staying to be a cuddle bug with the family’s mom and daughter. Buck number two, who is sweet but also a bit more curious and adventurous is going home with the son. He said their personalities were perfectly matched. Looking at how this buck just melted into his arms, I 💯 % agree! I am so happy that these last two bucks found loving, perfect homes.

Our last 2 Lucky 🍀 Litter does found their way home in the pouring rain yesterday. They were safe in their new kids’ arms the whole drive home. Go live your best lives, Clover & Lucky!!

A local homesteader also came and adopted one of our last bucks. Some would say he is the lucky one with 4 does waiting for him at his new home. 😂
We are so grateful and happy for our new & growing Rex’n Texan families to share news for the future!

This is one of my favorite stages. Their eyes have opened, and the biggest 3 are hopping out of the nest. Unfortunately they can’t hop back IN quite yet, but they are so adorable trying to get their little back feet working together correctly.

This was something I wasn’t looking forward to doing, but I knew I needed to. With my dog boarding side business ramping up for Spring Break, I really needed to ensure the physical safety and ensure low stress levels for my lovelies. 🐰 ❤️ Electronic fences aren’t for everyone, but done correctly, they can keep everyone safe and where they are supposed to be. This was a photo about 1/2 way through the project. 😊

I’m so grateful I was able to install the upper rain gutter system just as the rain started to pour down yesterday afternoon. I’m happy to say enough has come down today that when I opened the spout today, water did come through!
