A sneak behind the scenes of Dogs Savvy Kids and ISCDT - Dog Trainer Program
I am working on my latest blog post, Violet had a friend sleeping over. #Dogs #relaxation #dogtraining #dogsafety
How do you help your dog decompress?
What creative ways have you created a safe space for your dog?
Share your favorite cozy corner setup or calming techniques!
This is my favorite video. My dog is blind, yet she knew there was a new dog in the house and she wanted so badly to meet her. Yet the foster dog, who we eventually adopted, was not ready. She was too stressed from the long drive up North.

Choosing the Right Breed of Dog for Your Family. Today I answer Emily’s question. #dogbreeds #dogrescue #breedspecificadoption #woof
Did you know that understanding your dog’s body language can significantly improve the relationship with your dog and other people in your home?
Does your dog need space from the kids?
Is your dog uncomfortable with people near his food bowl while he eats?
Does your dog feel uncomfortable with handling?
Does children running and screaming stress your dog?
Dogs communicate largely through body language, and understanding these signals can help you respond better to your dog’s needs.

Pulling items from a dog’s mouth could promote stealing, because it gets your full attention. It can also promote biting, because the dog sees you as someone who steals items of importance to him. Teaching stop drop or give it decreases the chance your dog will become frustrated or angry and bite.

Dog Safety Presentation
“I was attacked by a dog when I was a kid and needed numerous surgeries to fix the damage.”
I hear these stories all the time.
“Your program is so important. Thank you.”
Unfortunately, no one considers the possibility that their dog may bite their child until it happens.
Dog owners anthropomorphize their dogs. In doing so, believe their dog knows better than to bite their child. “My dog is good. He would never.”
Long Island Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Libraries, Daycare Centers and some PTA’s have been proactive by hiring us to educate children on appropriate dog interactions and dog safety.
These children learn how to read dog emotions, what behaviors are unfair and behaviors that foster a strong bond between children and dogs.
Help Long Island parents be proactive rather than reactive by sharing our information.
No one wants their child to suffer a serious dog attack.
Having to remove your dog from the home is a devastating decision.
If you know someone with school-aged children, please share this post. We provide an affordable presentation for their school, daycare or child/pet friendly organization.
Thank you,
Katie & Violet 🐾

Young children should not walk dogs independently. The risk is too great.
PM me and I will send you detailed information on the dangers of allowing young children to walk dogs.
Know a friend who would benefit by this information? Tag them here or share the post.

Are you struggling to find a happy balance between your child and your dog? 😢
Growling, snarling and barking is horrifying when it is directed toward your child.😳
Equally frustrating is when your child won't follow your dog safety advice.🤦♀️🤦
Dog Savvy Kids will step in and teach your child how to safely and kindly interact with your dog. 🙋♀️👦🧒👧🐶
Our live dog safety presentation aims to:
✅Teach children how to approach and interact with dogs safely.
✅ Raise awareness about canine body language and behavior.
✅ Instill empathy and compassion for animals.
✅ Teach children safe dog handling skills.
We want to help children and their families understand canine communication so they know when the dog is “okay to play” and when you “should stay away”.
Dog Savvy Kids offers dog safety programs for schools, girl scouts, boy scouts, homeschool programs, dog rescues and other dog/kid friendly programs.
Let us teach your child to recognize body language that indicates the dog is uncomfortable with the interaction. This is done in a fun environment.

Babysitter Tip
When babysitting in a home with a dog, don’t leave the dog alone in a room with very young children.
Sometimes the dynamic between the dog and child can change when parents are not home. A dog may feel safer with their human around. A child may act differently in the absence of a parent.
Other times dog trainers notice a problem in the home that parents miss. This happens because people love their dogs and don’t believe the dog would ever hurt their child, despite warning signs of canine stress.
I don’t want a dog bite to happen at all! Especially don’t want an incident while you are caring for the child.
Play it safe by securing a young child in a play pen or the dog in a crate when you walk out of the room. Even if you are just leaving for a minute.
If there is not a secured area, then bring either the dog or child with you.

Does your dog have an escape clause?
It was about 18 years ago that I stood on my front lawn speaking with a mom who arrived to pick her son up from a play date at my house.
My dog was with me because there were other children still playing inside.
While I spoke with this mom, her ten year old was kneeling on the ground petting my dog.
At some point he thought it would be fun to move his pointer finger toward her eye then pull it back. Each time he brought his finger closer to her eye.
I am unsure why my dog sat there while this was happening, but she did not move.
I asked the boy to stop and explained that while he was having fun, my dog likely wasn’t.
Looking back, I realized that my first move should have been to get my dog away from the situation, before speaking with the boy.
While my dog was very patient with children, her annoyance with this child could have been growing. While I spoke with him, she could have made a terrible mistake. I wouldn’t know because I did not know how to read my dog at the time.
These are things you learn when studying dog psychology and dog safety.
This situation happened years before I began working as a dog trainer and bite prevention educator. I did not have the tools necessary to effectively protect my dog and this child.
Since that time, all of my dogs learned a cue that helps them escape a situation. That cue is touch.
I started Dog Savvy Kids to help you keep your dog and children safe without having to study dog training and psychology. We invite you to follow our page for tips.
We also encourage you to visit our website for games, stories and activities that will help make your child a dog savvy kid.
How do you help your dog escape a scary situation?
Note: the child in this video did nothing wrong. It is just a recording I have demonstrating the cue and how it works.

Growling in dogs isn’t always a sign of being mean. It’s often their way of saying they’re uncomfortable or stressed, not necessarily aggressive. Understanding their context and body language is key!
