Late season
Some late season training.
While dui is away(see todays big announcement) we went to check the waders for leaks and last minute tune ups for Opie.
We are starting to get the hang of the bigger birds.
Bob’s big debut was today. He watched and followed the big dogs for the first dozen and then tried a couple on his own. Bob was born in April and is the perfect dog in the house and field. This was bob’s last retrieve of the day.
After 4 miles in 80 degrees cooling off in lake Oahe felt amazing.
This is our first step to introduce gunfire and loud noises. We will transition from meals to corner fetch training sessions and when randomly playing as we progress.
With the heat the last couple days training needs to be quick, easy, and fun. A pheasant wing tied to some fishing line is one of my favorite starter drills to build drive, gets him use to feathers in his mouth, and helps burn a little puppy energy. Bob is 9 weeks old and is doing amazing.
Todays morning work is nose work, the sit command and a mile walk.
Grayson got in on the dog training tonight with both dogs. Only 4 short weeks and we start training one of DUI’s puppies. I believe there are two yellow males left. Get in contact with Rocky Ridge Labradors to join the journey with us. I’m off Tuesday to Tea to pick up two new Ruff Land Kennels and get some training supplies.
Practiced the scenario of a downed bird coming from another hunter.
Some high flying and some not so high flying action. But atleast Opie is jumping off the dock.
Today’s nasty weather with snow and winds gusting in the 50mph range allowed an excellent opportunity to work longer retrieves. We went through the walk, crawl, and then run theory by starting in knee-high grass and then introducing 5-6 feet of cover to finish. We will expand this in the coming weeks into tree belts and cattails. BIG BIG NEWS TO COME IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS!!!!!!
Launcher Training
With the nice weather tonight, I broke out the launcher. My focus with Opie was marking and patience until being released. With Dui, I worked on coming back from a retrieve and having another go over his head.
Even in church clothes we got some practice in today. Enjoy the nice weather this week.
Getting your puppy comfortable to be around young children and babies.
Opie dove hunting at 4 months.
DUI learning to retrieve in thicker cover.
Opie was a little young to be invited to Minnesota's duck opener with the big boys. But we worked with some teal in the front yard when we got home.
Fishing for labs is one of my favorite trainings to build excitement, feather work, and some scent work.
