One of my absolute favorite species to work with is Gekko vittatus. Close cousins to the Tokay gecko, they share similar care requirements, and their remarkable family-oriented behavior. This truly sets them apart from most species!

Starting with a bonded pair, these geckos can live peacefully with their offspring. The parents not only tolerate their young — they actively protect the eggs throughout incubation.

Their eggs are adhesive, typically laid on cork bark or glass. As hatching time approaches, you’ll often notice the parents keeping a very close watch over the clutch, standing guard as their babies prepare to emerge.

This level of parental care is rare and fascinating to observe — just one of the many reasons I adore this species! 🦎💚

🚩 Red Flags to Watch For When Buying Reptiles

Not all sellers, vendors, or pet stores have the animals’ best interests at heart. Here are some important warning signs to help you protect yourself and the animals:

🐍 1. Cohabbing Solitary Species
Seeing multiple animals housed together that should never be cohabbed — such as leopard geckos, crested geckos, ball pythons, boas, and bearded dragons — is a huge red flag. This leads to stress, injury, and long-term health issues.

🔴 2. Red Heat Bulbs
Red or colored lights are outdated and harmful. They can disrupt sleep cycles, cause stress, and offer incorrect temperatures.

🦠 3. No Quarantine Procedures
If a store or seller is advertising animals they “just got in,” with no quarantine period, they’re risking the health of their entire collection — and yours.

📢 4. Claiming to Be a Rescue Without a 501(c)(3)
Real rescues are registered nonprofits.
Be cautious of anyone using the word “rescue” while breeding what they take in, flipping sick animals, or asking for animals to be surrendered while profiting off them.

🍼 5. Babies Sold Immediately
Anything newly hatched or born being offered right away is irresponsible. Babies need time to start feeding well, gain strength, and be properly established.

🥚 6. Selling Eggs
No ethical, reputable breeder sells eggs.
Ever.
It’s risky, often fatal to the embryo, and a major sign the seller sees profit over animal welfare.
