My unsolicited advice... If you want to feel like a successful reptile breeder, produce what you want to keep. Work with the species YOU want. Make things you can't afford to buy and are proud to call yours. If it's something rare or not it doesn't matter if you love it and care for it. Making a little side money is icing on the cake. Being able to support your passion with your offspring is phenomenal.
If you want to make lots of money and get rich, sell real estate or something ☺️

These were the very first two tanks we ever set up for our reptiles.
The one on the left housed a skunk gecko that was gifted to us—originally living in a cramped 10-gallon tank 😩. Not long after, we discovered tokay geckos and had to have them, so we repurposed a 70-gallon aquarium that someone gave us and built them a proper home. My husband turned an old cabinet into a stand, and I used leftover fake plants from our old fish tanks to decorate it.

At the time, we were brand-new parents, scraping by on a shoestring budget. That was 13 years ago. None of this happened overnight, and honestly, it still doesn’t—we’re always looking for ways to improve with what we have.

Since my gecko wall post got so much love, I just wanted to share this as a reminder: if we can do it, anyone can. It takes time, passion, and let’s be honest—a little obsession. You might have to skip the steak dinners or hold off on that dream vacation 🫣😆, but if you’re determined enough, you can build something amazing.
