I really haven’t posted anything in quite some time but I recently discovered an app that lets you kind of showcase my work instead of the boring shop photos. Some of these deer are older mounts but most of them are recently from the 20/21 season. The most impressive is the 26” wide full velvet buck.

Well this wraps up the final deer heads for the 2020 season. Delays with tanneries along with the lack of availability with supplies made it challenging to say the least. I’ve been doing this for 33 years now and this was the first time I ever had to wait for forms to be made. That doesn’t even take into account the lack of deer eyes on the market among other things. Hopefully things get better soon as I’ve switched to a new tannery and already received my first batch of capes back resolving that issue. Thanks to my customers for their patience.

I haven’t posted anything in a while but it doesn’t mean that I haven’t been busy. Starting to get deer heads back to clients from the 2020 season. Just received the 2nd batch of deer capes from the tannery yesterday so it shouldn’t be long for the next set of heads to be done as well.

Busy past few days in the shop as I finished up a few more projects. Hated to see the piebald leave the shop but the customer was very excited to get it home and be able to show it off to family visiting for the holiday.

These photos were sent to me by just 1 of my long time loyal customers who just completed their cabin. Absolutely beautiful although I’m kinda partial to the mounts. Anyone else who would like to share their photos, feel free!

Another project in the books. While I have to admit that I had this duck mounted by another taxidermist in order to speed up the completion time the customer was very very happy with the end results. I did create the base which compliments the duck rather well.

Finally completed this life size bear project this week. Had some issues that lengthened the job. From making the form both longer and wider to having to dye the hide to hide the thinned hair spots. It’s on the road heading for it’s new home.

I haven’t posted anything in a while, but it’s not because I haven’t been busy. Another wall full of bone ready to be picked up and enjoyed by these lucky hunters. Including a father and son team who doubled down on a pair of Wyoming archery bucks.

Recently finished up this pair of Canadian honkers. The customer was very pleased with them and wasted no time hanging them up in their great room. Thanks Bernie and carol for the positive comments.

At the recommendation of some family and friends I attempted to create a better background for my photos as opposed to the cluttered shop back drop in the past. It’s certainly not studio quality but it does accent the details on these deer heads. I’ll try to find something more permanent later but for now this will have to do.

I finally got a chance to post some pictures of recently completed deer heads including the buck I dubbed “ the droopy eye buck”. This deer’s eye was pushed down due to the antlers forcing the eye socket down preventing him from being able to keep his eye open all the way. The customer requested that the deer be mounted to look as normal as possible creating a challenge because the eye socket was also part of the antler base.

To all my valuable customers , just an FYI regarding bringing deer back into pa. It is legal to transport the meat into Pennsylvania as long as there is no backbone present. This means if you are able to skin your deer out and quarter it up you can legally bring it home. The head and hide is an entirely different situation. If you have a deer that you might want mounted there are 2 options. One is you find someone who is capable of skinning out the head and cutting off the antlers in order to remove the brain. If this is not an option, my shop is 2 minutes away from the Maryland- Pennsylvania line and I am willing to meet anyone on the MD side and skin it out for you but this is only for anyone who wants me to mount their head for them. I’ve checked with a game warden regarding this matter and was told that this is legal to do. Bottom line is you can’t bring anything back to PA containing brain, backbone, or spinal fluid matter. If you have any questions or concerns about any of this please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will try to answer to the best of my abilities based on the information I have

This message is going out to all my customers and anyone else that might be successful in archery season: if you harvest a deer that you are interested in getting mounted DO NOT PUT THE HIDE IN A PLASTIC BAG IMMEDIATELY AFTER REMOVAL FROM THE DEER!!! Hang the heads and hide up and let any body heat that might remain dissipate. 2 customers are already experiencing a problem because the heat inside the plastic bag is basically “cooking” the hide before it has time to cool down. Even after placing it in a refrigerator. Because the hide is bunched up inside the bag it is acting like it’s own cooler and the heat is causing the hair to slip. Anyone who has any
questions at all about this or transporting deer from out of state please call me. Thanks

I’m sending this message out to all my valuable customers. As a result of the increased calls and messages that I have been receiving in regards to turnaround times for mounts I contacted the tannery that I have been dealing with for the last 20+ years. I was informed that they are currently way understaffed and are working very diligently to process orders for their clients. Given the delicate nature that is required to process these skins in a manner that prevents them from having the hair slip, it’s paramount that they are handled with the utmost care and by people who know what they are doing. Trust me when I say that you don’t want any Joe Shmoe handling your hide. The tannery informed me that if any of my customers question the legitimacy of what I am relaying they may contact them directly and they will verify this information. If this is the case then contact me and I will give you the number. Thank you for your patience and consideration in this matter. I’m just as frustrated as the customers I serve but it is out of my hands.

Always up for something a little different so when a gentleman asked if I could get a buffalo hide tanned for him I said sure. Needless to say I had somewhat of an idea what I was in for but then again!! This thing weighed about 150 pounds and took 3 days to thaw out. I spent 2 1/2 hours fleshing it down only to discover only 1/2 of it would fit on the salt rack. So off to Home Depot after work to get materials to build a bigger one. Then to complicate things a little more it won’t even fit in the salt room after it’s completely laid out. Guess the wife will be parking her car in the driveway for a few days while I commandeer the garage. 😜

Just a few more projects that were completed this past week. I just finished up prepping the last batch of deer capes for shipment to the tannery. One more coyote base nearly finished and that will be ready for pickup as well. Next big project will be 2 life size bears.

For the first time in 2 weeks things have settled down in the shop. I had a great season with a lot of first time customers. Also had some awesome deer brought in to have mounted. I only have a few deer to finish up from last season and on to life size coyotes and bears. Trying to complete some smaller things in between like these European mounts. They are all for the same customer and I still have more to finish for other people.

Finally completed this coyote mount for a very patient customer. This is by far the largest one I have done over the years coming in around 55 lbs. I might add that is not an estimated guess but actually weighed on scales. Customer plans to add possibly a squirrel to the base later to give it a more realistic look!

2 boxes down and 2 more to go. I was recently asked by one of my customers to build shipping boxes for his deer heads for the long journey to their new home in Alaska! 28 years in the business I only ever shipped 1 deer head and that was to New York.

I have a customer who wanted to display multiple turkey tails and beards. I wasn't sure where to go with this project so after hours of trying different configurations this was what I came up with. The board itself is some chestnut that I have been saving. I actually made the center caps for the tails. One more set to go except they will be on oak instead.

It's not very often you get to see something like this so it was quite a privilege to be able to mount it for my customer. I certainly appreciate his patience while I was dealing with my arm issues.
