You may have followed the story of the dog dropped off in the parking lot at Herkimer County Humane Society. It was captured on video. The dog owner simply drove away abandoning and ailing, aging dog who has had several litters of puppies. The dog ran off - was struck by a car - and then was saved by dedicated volunteers who searched all over to bring her to safety. Now she is in need of surgery and a great deal of care to enjoy a restoration of health. You can help by donating to Herkimer County Humane Society. Read through several of their posts on FB to digest the full story.

Great to see the community give such great support to help Clifford have the surgery and care he needs. Animal Alliance of Greater Syracuse can use a little more help to get where they need to be to make sure this wonderful dog has a chance. Read the post for more.

We have an update on a Big, Red, Leg Up Dog named Clifford!

Since arriving at Cornell, Clifford has been examined and x-rayed, and most importantly he's been stabilized and made comfortable. He's receiving pain meds to keep him comfy and calm, and antibiotics to help prevent any infections.

Cornell has confirmed that his left hind leg is a complete break that went right through the skin. In addition, the left front leg is also fractured. Sadly, some new information is that Clifford’s front "elbow" also has damage. Of course, this leads to even more concern for his future ability to support himself with a hind leg amputation.

Given this new information, surgeons have elected to attempt a repair of the hind leg, and to support the front leg with an extra-strong, more robust splint, hoping that the ligaments will rebuild to allow him the strength he'll be needing in that leg. However, what ultimately will happen with this leg will have to be determined as time goes along. If it doesn't heal on its own, he may need to have the front leg/elbow repaired as well. That would mean yet another surgery for this poor guy who has already been through more than he should have to.

So today's result was positive but with a note of caution.

Clifford will be going into surgery first thing in the morning. Please send all your positive thoughts, prayers and vibes that you can muster to this baby, because as it turns out, he really still is. They estimate him to only be about 1-2 yrs old.

Stay strong Clifford! You have so many people on your side, rooting for you. Fingers, toes, and paws are all crossed for the repair!

Please donate to "Cash for Clifford" to help cover his medical costs. It's ESTIMATED that the costs will be anywhere from $7,000-$10,000!!!

Your kindness and caring is what allows Clifford and other CNY animals to receive this life-saving care.

Clifford doesn't have a family to care for him. The residents of CNY are his surrogate family right now. So please, if you can, make a donation towards his care. Every little bit counts, but if you are not able to, we understand. In place of that, please tell everyone about Clifford and perhaps one of them will be able to donate. You will be so glad you did.

Donations can be made online at:

Checks can be made out to AAGS and mailed to:

Be sure to write Clifford on your check!

On behalf of Clifford and everyone at the Animal Alliance of Greater Syracuse (AAGS) Leg Up program, THANK YOU. ❤🐾

Keep watch for an update to follow Clifford's surgery.

One day soon we will be post-quarantine. Here's some advice about breaking the news to your pet who has loved having you home so much.

With stay-at-home orders put in place during the pandemic, our four-legged friends have been getting some extra time with their owners. As some states start to ease restrictions, this change in the daily schedule is apt to trigger anxiety in pets, particularly in dogs.
