FAR BETTER!! During my 12:30 AM night patrol for feral hogs, I found one of my longhorns had FINALLY given birth to what will be the 1st calf born of our new herd sire "Iron Cowboy" (who arrived 13 months ago).

COUGAR ENCOUNTER??
Who's a GOOD BOY? Rocky, that's who.
Beverly wakes me at 1:30 AM this morning, "the cows are going berserk outside! It sounds like they are screaming!"
So I get dressed and grab my thermal scoped rifle to pierce the darkness to see what's up. The deer were practically against the house staring out into the pasture, too.
Rocky was bellering aggressively to ME at the house to get my attention as if he were a dog: running back and forth as close as he could get without breaking down the fence? The rest of the herd was a good 800 yards away on the other side of the lake. I hop into the truck and drive over to him and he swings his head, bellers and runs off 150 yards or so and stops to look back at me. I pursue him and he repeats the process leading me back to the herd. He then snorts and paws the ground as he as 3 other cows were high head staring into a grove of oak trees.
My only guess is that Rocky had encountered the cougar that has already killed 4 of my cows and had it treed. WOW!! In all my years of messing with cattle, I've never had one act like a dog like this one. He was like "Lassie, has Timmy fallen into the well?"
Needless to say the time it took me to figure it out was enough time for any predator to escape the tree grove.
What a GOOD BOY, ROCKY!! Aggressively protecting the herd and coming to get help.

Meet Little Miss Daisy! Such a sweet new arrival on Westview Ranch. Nothin' is sweeter and softer than a new calf!

Momma was nearby staring us down. We got one hearty bellow from this baby, and momma blindly jumped over a tall fence, barreled through briar, and down the hill to check on her little one. Sweet Daisy will be very loved and well taken care of here on The Ranch

It was an EASY split second decision for me to sneak up behind this first calving heifer and pull the amniotic sac off of her newborn babies nose, so he could breathe. ......

It is EASY for me to turn my giant bathtub into a piglet nursery, when it is 30 below zero outside. ....
It is EASY for me to grab blankets off of my own bed and wrap a wet, cold, newborn calf in them. Or to take MY towels and dry them off. .....
It is EASY for me to reach shoulder deep into a struggling mother cow’s rear to help deliver a baby calf, or a sow delivering piglets. ....
It is EASY for me to at 6months pregnant load a calf into my Grand Prix and rush it to the vet. ....
It is EASY for me to be covered in blood, amniotic fluid, urine, and cattle f***s, before I make my way in for dinner that evening. .......
It is EASY to build fences, & corrals, &barns, & breeding programs, & relationships ,& families when you are the kind of strong people we are. ...
It is EASY for us because we are We are We are We are We are We are We are We are full of spirit & grit.

This is a not an EASY lifestyle. Trust me.And I would have to disagrees that you could teach “anyone in this room” what we do. But when you are doing what God has called you to do, the rough and difficult patches, or barriers that shut other people down, you can break with ease. ....
It is EASIER to be the person God has called you to be.
