Today is National French Bulldog Day! Frenchies are currently the most popular dog in the U.S. after the breed exploded in popularity in 2023. They have easily identifiable wrinkles, flat faces (brachycephalic), and large ears; making most people think they are irresistible. While they are wonderful companions we should also mention some of their special needs. Due to their brachycephalic faces, this breed can suffer from breathing issues which can also cause overheating issues. Given this, frenchies usually need to avoid strenuous activity, especially during the hotter or more humid months. Let’s see some frenchies in the comments or in our direct messages!

One Health Awareness Month is every January. This is a topic looking towards obtaining positive global impacts in health. This is not just for humans, but animals, plants, and the ecosystem as well. These things directly correlate to one another and each can be impacted positively or negatively by the others. There are certain diseases or viruses that can be spread from species to species, leading to the creation of more vaccines and precautions within certain fields that work with other species. While not common, humans can also catch bacteria, fungi, or toxins from plants as well, so it is important to be educated on these issues. If you have any questions or want to research more, OneHealthCommission.org has more information to look at.

Today is Phoenix’s birthday! Many of our clients have not had the privilege of meeting Phoenix yet, but she has been a great addition to our team! She is an aspiring veterinarian, and we are thrilled to be with her on her journey. She takes the new things that she learns to heart and quickly picks up on any changes that come with starting a new job. She is currently a student finishing up her degree before looking towards veterinary school. She loves working with animals and her dream is to be able to provide care and comfort for them. She worked on internships prior to her start here at Gulley, as well as shadowing during high school at other clinics. Please join us in wishing Phoenix a 🎂

Today is National Australian Shepherd Day. Aussies, as they are affectionately called, are herding dogs that have a strong work ethic and drive, making them great ranch dogs. They are incredibly smart and active, so they like having a job and need the space to run. Their long, double-layer coat does need to be brushed through at least once weekly, but during shedding season, can require more focus. Because of their high energy, it is recommended to get aussies into training quickly during their puppy stages. They are quick learners that WANT to complete tasks, so training is generally considered easy for them. They can be affectionate with their family and are good with children. Please show some aussie love in the comments or in our direct messages!

Today is National Labrador Retriever Day! Labradors are one of the most popular dog breeds in America. They are known for being friendly in nature; they are excitable yet well-mannered pups. Most labs are also notoriously water dogs, making them great companions for those who enjoy aquatic activities during the warmer weather (with proper safety precautions). Retrievers are also exceptionally smart, making them easily trainable as hunting dogs or family pets. Due to their naturally friendly disposition, they are not generally considered to be good as a protection dog. They are loyal to their family and are happy to learn new skills, or just spend time with their favorite people. If you have a lab, please show us some pictures in the comments or via direct messages!

Today is National Cuddle Up Day AND National Standard Poodle Day. We are merging the two with Dr. Lovell and Harper! Standard poodles are one of the smartest breeds out there! They are known for their high trainability, and their friendly nature. Their coats, while low-allergenic, do need to be groomed often to prevent matting and other issues that may need medical intervention (hot spots, ear/skin infections etc…). Poodles are often easily recognized due to the “Sporting Clip” hairstyle that they rock! If you have owned a poodle, let us see some pictures in the comments or send them to us directly. It’s cold out, so stay warm, and cuddle up!

Today is National Pet Travel Safety Day! The day highlights ways to improve pet safety while traveling. One way we can help with pet safety is to prepare ahead of time. If your pet struggles with car anxiety, car sickness, or just a general lack of comfort in your vehicle, it may be important to talk with your vet ahead of your trip. They can help you decide on potential homeopathic or medicinal remedies to help. Another method to maintain pet safety in a vehicle is to keep them secured. For cats or small dogs, a well-ventilated crate may be helpful. For bigger animals, kennels are still recommended but may take up more space. There are pet seatbelts readily available to help keep your pet in place. In the event of an accident, many pets can be injured or lost if unsecured. There are other ways to protect your pets during travel; if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to research some options that may work for you and your pet.
