Some of the beautiful costumes that we got to see yesterday! You may recognize the golden from last Halloween where we came in dressed as our namesake, Shrek. This year, we went with “sock eater”… pretty fitting too! 🧦🥴

Today is National Black Cat Day. With Halloween being a few days ahead, we want to touch on a scary and sensitive topic for some. Black cats have always carried a forced stigma around them due to the misconception that they are “unlucky”. They are often depicted as deceitful or ominous. This is NOT TRUE. While we all know cats are more independent, we love ourselves a good black kitty here at GPPC. This is your friendly reminder to not breed or color shame a pet. Many shelters will not adopt out black cats around Halloween for fear of their safety. This is a horrible situation for these animals and shelters to be placed in. Every pet, no matter the color or breed deserves love and a safe home. Comment below if you have a black cat who needs some love

The last Saturday in October is National Pitbull Awareness Day. We want to bring attention to and change the negative perceptions around this breed. A ”pitbull” is technically an umbrella term for many different types of bully breeds. Pitbulls often have hurtful and untrue preconceived notions about them. All different types of dogs could have behavioral issues; the difference stems from the strength between breeds. Most pitties are known for their loyalty, friendliness, and affectionate nature. Many of the employees here at Gulley have pitbulls at home! Please remember to not judge a dog (or a cat) by their breed or appearance, as they can be harmful and damaging towards a breed that already has issues finding loving homes.
Here are some pictures of the staff pitties! 😊

October 9th was National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, but we think it is important to talk about this issue, even if it is a bit late. Most people with pets LOVE spoiling them and one of the most popular methods to do so is by giving treats. While treats are great in moderation, some pets get a bit more than they need and it can cause them to gain weight quickly. Many people do not notice when their pet is becoming heavier but it is important to keep a healthy weight in order to keep them from developing issues in the future such as arthritis, diabetes, etc.. If you are concerned about your pet’s weight or inability to lose weight, make an appointment today to talk with a veterinarian about next steps.

October is National Pet Wellness Month. The goal is to refocus on healthy habits for you and your pets. We always want to make sure that our pets are happy, healthy, and taken care of. Some of the things that we as pet owners should do to ensure this are making sure that you have at least 1 annual checkup with your veterinarian and update vaccines, make sure they get ample outside time or exercise, help them with mental enrichment, and keep them fed and watered appropriately. If you are ever worried that your pet is not behaving in their typical way, it is always best to get them evaluated as well to help catch any potential issues with their physical or mental well-being.

October is Adopt-A-Dog Month! While every month we want to help clear the shelters, October focuses on helping to get pups out of shelters and rescues and provide them with a forever home. There are many shelters and rescues in the area that are at risk of overcrowding and desperately need the community to step up and adopt pets from them. Big Paws of the Ozarks is a foster-based rescue that we work closely with. They have amazing dogs, and an incredible staff to help you every step of the way. Consider adopting a new pup into your life this month! They are waiting for you!

October 21st is now recognized as National Pets for Veterans Day. The goal of today is to bring awareness to programs that are in place that help with the adoption of animals in need of companionship with veterans who can also benefit greatly from the bond with an animal. There is an organization called “Pets for Vets” that pairs a veteran with a shelter dog in order to provide comfort and support for each member. Dogs are proven to help with stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health illnesses that veterans may have. If you are interested in learning more, you can go to the Pet’s for Vets website and read in depth about the cause.

Today is our last shoutout to our wonderful assistant Caitlyn. Caitlyn is our fun-loving and strong-willed assistant who has been with Gulley now for 2.5 years, the same clinic that she started her VetMed adventure at. While Caitlyn is relatively new to VetMed, you would never guess that. She is knowledgeable and efficient at most everything she does, running the scope from preventive medicine to complicated hospitalization cases. Caitlyn is our go-to girl for all things social media as well and is constantly working tirelessly to inform clients not only face to face but on our social media platforms. Please let Caitlyn know how much she is loved for all her hard work in the comments below!

Let’s touch on another amazing tech today! Stephanie has been working in VetMed for 4 years and went through tech school at ASU Bebe prior to that! She is well-informed on the job and knows how to care for her patients in the best way possible. Stephanie is quick and efficient and everyone that works with her can always rely on her if they need pointers or just a refresher! She is willing to take on challenges and adapts quickly to change. She is also one of the first people to step up and help when others may need it. Please tell Stephanie how grateful we are to have her in the comments below!

Today is National Feral Cat Day!! While Raya isn’t feral, sometimes she acts like it… The goal of today is to raise awareness of the communities of stray or feral cats that live outdoors, and to promote their health and wellbeing. Today, you may see spay and neuter clinics participating in TNRs or low-cost vaccines. TNRs or trap, neuter (or spay) and release are fairly self-explanatory. The aim is to prevent the further overpopulation of the invasive species known as feral cats. If you are interested in learning more about these programs, look into your local shelters and ask about any services that they may offer for our outdoor, unowned cat friends!

Today’s shoutout is for Christina! Christina has been in VetMed for 16 years but has been working with animals for around 25! Christina is another assistant who is extremely knowledgeable and is ready to help others when needed. She comes into every day with a silly attitude that is infectious to everyone around her. Because of Christina’s experience working with animals in different settings, she is also very familiar with animal behavior and has lots of experience with our more fractious patients (especially cats!). For that, the entire clinic is thankful and confident in her abilities. Please thank Christina for her hard work in the comments!
