Life is busy! Here's a quick tip to help fit training into your hectic schedules. Once a week, stash a 5-10 treats in different rooms around your house. When you find yourself next to those treats, grab one and ask your dog for a single behavior. Then continue with whatever you need to be doing

As Ambriel hit six months, adolescence hit him like a ton of bricks! Let’s talk about it so I don’t lose my sanity (because yes, even when you’re a trainer and understand what’s going on, it’s still frustrating and mentally draining at times!). Every time it seems that they start out by “forgeting” the things they know best.

I put forget in quotation marks because they don’t *actually* forget anything, they’re just going through a heavy cognitive burst as they’re developing. They’re more distractable by the environment, desire more independence, are starting to test boundaries, and of course you can’t forget that they’re also going through puberty as their hormones are starting to kick in.

So what’s up with my boy? This is what he has to say for himself:

“Ambriel? Bri? That’s not my name anymore, I don’t have a name. I respond to nothing and do what I want when I want. Thank you very much!”

Yeeeaaah the strongest critical skill in his repertoire (name response)? Totally nonexistent for a few days.

Deep breath for the human. This is developmentally appropriate. It’s fiiiiiine.

So how do we deal with these little hurdles?

Retrain your pup as if they never knew the skill in the first place. It will take less time than it did initially, they just really need a foundational reminder to jumpstart their memory and realize that it’s still worth their while to listen to what is asked of them.

Above all with adolescents, if you get frustrated then it’s time to walk away for a few minutes. Neither you or your pup benefit from continuing to train when you’re frustrated with them. Take a break and when you go back to it try to remember to start the skill from scratch and build back to the level they were at before.

I don't know that there are enough words to convey how influential Karen Pryor has been to the field of dog training. As a graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy, her influence has shaped who I am as a dog trainer today. Thank you Karen. Rest in peace.

About Karen Pryor Karen Pryor, publicity photo for Oceanic Institute, about 1968. Karen Pryor had many interests. She was an observer of the smallest detail (as a child she studied butterfly anatomy) but what made her life’s work exceptional was that she also saw the big picture. It would have bee...
